πŸ’™πŸ’š Staff Update πŸ’šπŸ’™

We have some very sad but important news for our clients. Our wonderful Client Care Coordinator Cat will sadly be leaving us next month. Cat has been a part of the Coulby team for 10 years and over that time has been an extremely valued member of White Cross! Supporting clients and pets during happy times but also in the very sad times too. Cat is known by clients, and the team for her welcoming smile, friendly face, bubbly personality and of course her compassion and amazing hugs during the times when we have to say goodbye to our pets. Her love for all pets big or small never goes unnoticed, she is a friend to all and she will be extremely missed by everyone!

It’s not all sad news, Cat is moving on to pastures new and we know you will all join us in wishing her the best of luck in her new venture! Cat’s last day with us is the 19th of December so if you would like to say goodbye to Cat we know it would mean a lot to her to bring your pets along between now and the 19th of December for some hugs and treats!

GOOD LUCK CAT πŸ’™πŸ’š

πŸ† Weight Award Wednesday πŸ†

Today we are celebrating the success of two special dogs who have been awarded their weight loss awards πŸ’™πŸ’š

George has been on his weight loss journey since January and has lost an incredible 5.2kgs. George is very special to us, he has complex idiopathic epilepsy and spends a lot of time with us at the practice. Extra precautions had to be made to ensure this diet was safe for him due to his medical condition but he has done amazingly well! His weight has reduced from 16kgs to 10.8kgs and he also lost 12cm from his waist and chest, he thoroughly deserves his 5kg milestone award. Well done George we are always so proud of you ⭐️

Next up is Toby who started his weight loss journey in December after putting on weight after he was neutered. His owners have taken all the right steps in helping him to reduce his weight using his tailored weight loss diet and Toby has had a consistent weight loss at every appointment. He has now reached his first milestone of 30kgs after losing an incredible 1.2 stone and 24cm from his neck, chest and waist! Well done Toby, you are such a happy boy and we are so proud of how far you have come! We look forward to seeing you hit your next target⭐️

Are you worried your pet is overweight or have you been advised weight loss for your pet? Why not book in for a free weight clinic appointment with our Consult Nurse to discuss how we can help your pet reduce their weight βš–οΈ

Today we have had an injured cat brought into the surgery. He is an entire male, tabby and white young adult approximately 1-2 years old. He has white paws, chest, face and tummy, and he is not microchipped or wearing a collar. He was found on the B1365 turnoff towards Hemlington/Coulby Newham.

Sadly, due to his injuries we have had to put him to sleep on welfare grounds 🌈

Please contact the surgery on 01642 576333 if you think this may be your cat.

🌟 Weight Award Wednesday 🌟

We would like to say a huge well done to Millie! She has lost 5.5kgs on her recent weight loss diet and has done incredibly well, this amount of weight loss for little dog is a huge achievement! As Millie is a senior dog who is also on treatment for the management of her osteoarthritis, it was extra important for her to lose weight to relieve the pressure on her joints. We would also like to say a huge well done to Millie’s owners who have worked very hard over the last year to help her achieve this amazing result ❀️

Well done Millie you little superstar πŸ†

πŸ’‰ πŸ’Š Multimodal Approach to the Management
of OA πŸ’ŠπŸ’‰

The sooner pain is recognised in pets, the sooner a treatment plan specific to your pet can be created. The best way to manage OA is with a variety of techniques and treatments. The pyramid image below from Canine Arthritis Management highlights the key ways we can manage OA.

🦴 DIET & SUPPLEMENTS - Ensuring your dog is a good body condition score and at ideal weight. It is proven that overweight pets are at higher risk of OA. There are specific veterinary diets that help manage weight and support joints such as Hills metabolic & mobility. Supplements are great to help manage joint condition and health.

🦴 HOME ADAPTATION- environmental changes can be simple and easy but make a massive difference to their comfort at home. Such as adding rug runners to prevent slipping, raised feeding bowls, steps/ramps, easy access bedding which is supportive, and use of a Y shaped harness. These are just some of the many adaptations that can be implemented.

🦴 MODIFYING EXERCISE- controlled exercise is key to managing OA in its various stages. Exercise must be appropriate for their age, breed and current stage of OA. Please speak to the clinical team who can advise you on how best to exercise your pet.

🦴 COMPLIMENTARY THERAPIES- Adding in therapies like hydrotherapy and laser therapy can massively help manage OA. Also acupuncture is great for our older pets. We work with some great local rehabilitation centres and can discuss these options with you at the clinic.

🦴 MEDICATION- There are a variety of different medications that can be used. These may be NSAIDs like metacam, injectable pain relief like librela and tablets. The specific medication given to your pet depends on each patients case and how suitable it will be for them. Your veterinary team will discuss options in detail with you and further investigations may be required to find the best option for them.

🧠 Client Recognition of pain 🧠

β€œHe’s just old” This is a statement that we hear on a daily basis within clinic, but is not a reason to not manage a pet’s pain. As our pets age they will undergo changes to joints and bones which will be uncomfortable for them and painful. As veterinary professionals there are a variety of measures we can implement to help keep our pets comfortable.

Often certain breeds are predisposed to OA, which may be due to genetic factors causing hip & elbow dysplasia, and patella luxation. These pets can display signs of OA in their younger years, so it is important that when people purchase pets like these they are aware of any possible issues that may occur and how best to manage them.
Breeds such as labradors, German shepherd, Scottish fold, and persian are breeds we frequently see with these issues.

Senior health clinics which are run at the clinic are a safe, comfortable environment in which clients can discuss the best management for their pet with OA. These clinics include a full physical assessment and a thorough discussion of the benefits and options to manage their OA.

We must remember pain is not temporary and has lasting effects and OA is a chronic condition. Even the most subtle signs of pain need to be addressed!
