I completed a Canine Pregnancy and Whelping course with Pupstarts Breeders to further improve my knowledge and understanding of the subject, and continue to support my clients.

I have lots of plans for training and further qualifications- always learning!

Still aiming for that perfect skull shot but got close with this one! You can see the separation between the two hemispheres of the brain which allowed me to make a more accurate due date measurement 🤓. Also got a quick heart rate reading showing it was within a healthy range. Thankyou Emma Stevens for asking me to scan your lovely spaniel and congratulations on the happy news!

Travelled up to Cumbria this evening to scan a beautiful working spaniel and give her owners the happy news that pups are due 🥰.

Booking a mobile scan allowed the owners to fit me in around their toddler’s evening routine and their other dogs without having to make a trip out. And I enjoyed scenic drive!

Delighted to confirm a gorgeous working Labrador in pup this morning, this will be her last chance for a litter so we had our fingers crossed! Such a privilege to be the first to see them at the start of their lives 🥰. Mum gets a little stressed being handled so allowing her to lounge on the sofa with her owner gave us the best chance of putting her at ease. The benefits of a mobile service!I don’t promise litter numbers but I say what I can see! This looks like a small litter and I’ll be popping back to see how they’re progressing soon.

Two pregnancy scans and a litter microchipped today, which neatly filled the school day - busy busy 🥰!

I forgot to take a picture of the scrumptious litter of black lab puppies I chipped over near Manchester; all happy and healthy, and nearly ready for their lucky new homes. So here’s a photo of our new addition at home instead, little Pickle 😍

Positive early pregnancy scan for a gorgeous, health tested, working Labrador with an estimated due date window to help with the planning. I’ll be popping back to visit this client for a late pregnancy scan for peace of mind. And a cuddle 🤗

In the absence of a pregnant female to scan this evening, I’m keeping myself entertained checking Luna still has a bladder and a liver. I can confirm all present and correct, not that Luna gives two hoots right now 😂

Feels a while since I did this but my certificate arrived today! Very proud to be accredited by an Animal Ultrasound Association approved training establishment and taught by an actual Medical Sonographer (who is amazing by the way).

There are endless practitioners out there who don’t have the correct training and with a breeding industry that is increasingly coming under speculation from authorities it has never been more important to ensure practitioners are competent and educated with the health and welfare of the animal at the forefront.

Clients wishing to use Brackenbound Canine for pregnancy ultrasound and microchipping services can rest assured I am conscientious and always striving to be the best I can be.

Thanks to for some great online training on the Apogee 1000 Lite! It was super useful for me to learn more about all the cool things my new ultrasound machine can do!

Looking forward to my 2 early pregnancy practice scans booked this week so I can put my learning to use.

Today I visited Kendal College Animal Care students again by kind invitation of Cunningshot Dog Training and Emma-louise Stevens to perform a late gestation scan on lovely Lottie the Labrador! It was the first scan using my new Apogee 1000 Lite machine and I’m delighted with the images and videos it produced. See more pics and vids in the comments!

Lottie’s pups were definitely in close company so it wasn’t really possible to see entire pups in one view but we saw some lovely hearts beating and various anatomical parts wriggling away!

Thanks Jane Shaw for letting me scan Lottie again, she’s an absolute pleasure. Can’t wait to see the pups when I come to do their microchipping!

I’d like to welcome an important new member of the Brackenbound team- the Apogee 1000 Lite! I’m beyond excited to have been able to upgrade my ultrasound scanner to one of the best mobile scanners for pregnancy. Not only does it take incredibly clear still images but also allows me to create video clips, view puppy hearts using colour Doppler, and also hear heart beats!

This new addition will not only improve the service I am able to give, it will allow me to really grow as a sonographer. I’ve already found it so much easier to navigate than my last machine (think Nokia 3310 vs iPhone 😂)

Today I’ve had lots of fun pressing buttons and working out the machine, and I’m looking forward to putting the Apogee to work on a late gestation sac tomorrow!

It’s important for me to keep learning and expanding my knowledge of the field I work in. I really enjoyed attending the National Dog Breeder Convention run by Pupstarts Breeders recently. Incredible speakers and fascinating subjects which I didn’t know a huge amount about before including epigenetics, nutrition of raw feeding and care of neonates.There was also an overview of canine pregnancy ultrasound from my scanning trainer Catherine Stowell which was brilliant.

Today I had great pleasure joining Animal Care students at Kendal College to demonstrate an early pregnancy confirmation scan on lovely Lottie the Labrador! We were all delighted to see that she was in pup with several sacs seen. Thankyou so much to Emma-louise Stevens for inviting and encouraging me and congratulations to Jane on Lottie's pregnancy!

This week I have been out and about getting as much ultrasound scanning practice as I can to improve my technique and develop my confidence! I had the pleasure of visiting 2 beauties in Lancashire last week! Well past their breeding days but they were kind enough to let me scan their bladders!

Hi, my name is Laila!

I have always loved animals and my roots and education is in the equine world where along with a mountain of handling experience, I worked my way up to a PhD in Veterinary Medicine (Equine Colic research).

Since then I got married and had 3 children, and have indulged another passion in dogs which I find fits in with my hectic life as a mummy! I have gained qualifications in canine sonography and microchipping and am a Silver member of the Animal Ultrasound Association (AUA).
