CONVICTED | Daniel Philip Stokes, 43, from Reddish, Stockport, Greater Manchester – left a starving miniature Schnauzer in pain with matted fur and an untreated mouth infection.

The 13-year-old dog, Poppy (pictured), was found with infected gums and teeth which left her mouth bloody and had prevented her from eating. As a result, she had become emaciated and malnourished. Her coat was so matted that it pulled on her skin causing her severe pain and discomfort.

Very sadly, due to the dog’s poor condition and extent of her suffering, a vet took the decision to euthanise her.

RSPCA Inspector Jess Araujo visited Stokes’ house to investigate a report about a neglected dog. Stokes let her in and took her to Poppy.

In a statement to the court Inspector Araujo said: “Poppy let me stroke her and I could feel her hips, ribs and spine very easily.”

Inspector Araujo could also smell the infection from Poppy’s mouth and the pet yelped when the defendant’s mother’s partner stroked her face.

She found that the animal was emaciated and suffering severe matting around the hind legs, feet, tail and mouth.

She advised Stokes that Poppy needed to be taken away for de-matting and to have the smell investigated.

Inspector Araujo added: “She couldn’t be left any longer in that state.”

Dr Edwards, an RSPCA vet at Greater Manchester Animal Hospital, said there was a strong smell from the pet’s mouth and she was in too much pain to be picked up or examined when conscious.

Speaking about the case, Inspector Araujo said: “It’s really sad that Poppy couldn’t be saved. She had been neglected for too long and because of the failure to get her veterinary care, she would have been suffering for some time.

“Cases like this show the importance of seeking early treatment from a vet if your pet seems poorly.

“We’d also like to thank the person who drew Poppy’s plight to our attention. Members of the public are vital in getting help to vulnerable, neglected animals.”

Sentencing | 12-week community order and 12-week curfew; ordered to pay £200 costs and £114 victim surcharge. Five-year ban applicable to all animals.

For reasons unknown to me, Zulu (1963) was something of a yearly Boxing Day tradition in my household.

Fun Fact: you can gauge someone's Welshness by the amount of times they were forced to watch Zulu by their Dad when growing up 😒
