We’re pleased to welcome the new Pet Abduction Act, coming into force from today, 24 August, which introduces tougher penalties for stealing dogs- up to five years in prison, a fine, or both.

This law is a crucial step in recognising the emotional value of dogs and the devastation caused to victims of pet theft.

Have you heard of leptospirosis? 😧

Leptospirosis, often shortened to lepto, is a disease caused by bacteria that damage vital organs, such as the liver and kidneys. It’s very serious and often fatal in dogs.

Dogs can catch leptospirosis from:

- Another infected dog
- Sniffing/licking the ground where an infected dog has urinated
- Urine from an infected cow, pig or rodent
- Infected wet ground or fresh water - lepto can live in wet ground and fresh water for several months

Leptospirosis can also be spread to other dogs by infected dogs, mice, rats and cows but can also be caught from infected water. So, if your dog lives on a farm, kills rodents or spends a lot of time swimming, they’re at a much higher risk of catching it ⚠️

There are a few different types of leptospirosis bacteria and each one is slightly different. Fortunately, we can vaccinate against the types of lepto bacteria commonly found in the UK. Find out more: http://pdsa.me/rwlP

🧡 What do cat vaccines protect against? 🧡

Cat flu: Feline Herpes Virus (FHV) and Feline Calicivirus (FCV) both cause cat flu. There are a number of different strains of FCV and it can be deadly. Cat flu can make more vulnerable cats, such as young kittens and elderly cats, seriously ill. Vaccinating your cat against cat flu is the best way to protect them.

Feline Parvovirus: This causes severe disease in cats, especially kittens, and is often fatal. It is an extremely hardy virus and can survive in an environment for a long time. Both indoor and outdoor cats are at risk because the virus is easily carried into the home on shoes and clothing.

What else can my cat be vaccinated against?

There are a few more vaccines designed to protect your cat, ask in practice for help and advice 😊
- Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV). This virus causes a fatal disease, your cat is most at risk if they go outdoors.
- Clamydophila felis. This bacteria can cause conjunctivitis in cats and is another of the infectious agents responsible for cat flu.
- Bordetella bronchiseptica. This bacteria causes flu-like symptoms in cats and can cause kennel cough in dogs.

🧡 Q. What do dog vaccines protect against? 🧡

Canine Parvovirus is perhaps the most common canine infectious disease. The disease is usually seen as bloody diarrhoea in young animals, with an offensive odour and severe dehydration. If symptons develop, call the practice immediately.

The Canine Distemper virus attacks most parts of the body. As the disease progresses, the virus spreads. The incubation period is long (often about three weeks) so sadly it is usually too late to vaccinate when an outbreak occurs.

Canine Hepatitis attacks the liver. Some dogs may become infected but show no obvious signs, but in severe cases sadly death can occur within 24-36 hours.

Leptospirosis is caused by bacteria that spreads in the urine of infected animals. The disease can cause severe liver damage in just a few days.

Canine Parainfluenza is one of the organisms responsible for the disease known as "kennel cough". Dogs with this disease suffer from a harsh, dry cough that can last for many weeks, causing distress for both the dog and owner. It can be caught anywhere there is high dog traffic, NOT just in kennels.

Q. Is vaccination safe?

A. YES: Several large and independent surveys have been conducted in the last few years, and all have shown that vaccinated animals are at no greater risk of developing diseases than un-vaccinated animals. As with any product, including food, a tiny proportion of animals may have a reaction to the vaccine, but this must always be balanced against the much greater risk of fatal disease.

Q. What happens if my puppy or kitten misses a vaccination or booster?

A. It’s vitally important your young animal gets all its vaccinations. Contact the practice as soon as possible to rearrange the appointment or to restart the vaccinations.

Q. If my animal is ill or has a chronic condition, should it be vaccinated?

A. It depends. If the vet does not feel they are well enough to be vaccinated then the appojntment will be rearranged and the primary issues will be dealt with first.

Q. How will my pet react to the vaccine?

A. You may find that they are tired after the vaccine and may develop a small lump at the injection site. This is normal 😊 If you are concerned in anyway please contact the practice.

🧡🍫🧡 National Milk Chocolate Day 🧡🍫🧡

Its estimated that in 2023, the UK's population of approximately 67 million, consummed approximately 536,000 tonnes!

However dogs should not eat chocolate. If your dog has accidently got hold of some, their risk will depend on their weight, the type of chocolate and the amount they have eaten.

⚠️Signs of chocolate poisoning in dogs⚠️

If your dog has eaten chocolate, speak to your vet so they can assess your dog's risk of chocolate poisoning. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning can develop even if your dog has only eaten small amounts, and include:

vomiting
diarrhoea
hyperactivity
tremors, seizures or fits
heart problems
death, in severe cases

Remember, the darker the chocolate, the higher the level of theobromine, and therefore the more toxic it is!

National Anti Boredom Month 😁

🧡 Training 🧡

The mental exercise of training can be just as tiring as the physical exercise. Why not teach your dog a new party trick and not only will they learn new skills, but it will also help improve your relationship and boost their confidence.

You could teach your dog to:
Give you their paw, one at a time (or high five)
Do a figure of eight
Tidy up their toys
Put their paws up
Run through a tunnel
Rollover

As well as teaching your pup tricks, you can also do other basic training including teaching them useful life skills. This could be fun loose-lead walking with puppies before they can go outside. You can also teach them to settle and do recall training. As well as providing enrichment this will be very helpful in future situations.

These training sessions don't need to be very long, 2 to 5 minutes is perfect (even shorter for young puppies!).

Some quick and easy times to do a training session include:
- Using some of your dog's regular portion of biscuits as individual treats at mealtimes
- During an ad break while you're watching television
- Before you start or right after you finish their regular walk.

National Anti Boredom Month 😁

🧡 Scent-based enrichment 🧡

Smell is very important to our dogs. Sniffing is a natural behaviour to them and is a vital way for them to gain information about their environment.

On walks, where safe to do so, allow your dog plenty of opportunity and time to sniff. Mix it up and go to different places each time. This will give them new experiences and of course, new smells.

You could also hide their favourite treats or toys around the house for them to sniff out in their very own game of 'hide and seek'.

Using their sense of smell is incredibly enriching for dogs, and their brain is processing so much information that it makes these kinds of activities an excellent way to burn excess energy. It's also a great way for your dog (and you) to decompress and lower stress levels ☺

National Anti Boredom Month 😁

🧡 Games with toys 🧡

Playing games with your dogs toys is beneficial both physically and mentally. It also helps to build their confidence and will help to strengthen the bond between the two of you.

Here’s some top tips when playing games with toys:

1. Rotate your dog’s toys weekly. This will keep them excited and interested in them.

2. Let them win games. Your dog will enjoy it if you take it in turns and both win a few games each.

3. Your dog may rip soft toys up – this is natural behaviour. Just make sure you are always supervising when they are playing with these toys. You don’t want them to swallow any small parts. If you do need to take away a part of the toy, swap this for a treat or two.

4. Dogs will naturally hold, tug and shake toys with their mouths. If their teeth come into contact with you, stay calm, still and quiet to signal the end of the game. Then, calmly move away, if necessary. Take a short break and continue playing so they learn that the fun continues when their teeth stay on the toy.

Flirt Poles: They are a great toy that tire out high-energy dogs quickly. So what exactly is a flirt pole? Think of it asa larger cat toy. They make it easier for us to play with our dogs without having to run around as much since the pole gives you a way to get your dog chasing after a toy while you can stay stationary as well as giving you a chance to practice their "drop it."

Fetch: We all know a game of fetch is another easy game to tire out your energetic pup but, it doesn't always have to be outdoors. Change up what kind of toys your dog gets to chase and retrieve to keep them interested.
One fetch game rule everyone should follow is to avoid throwing sticks. They can cause injuries such as splinters, punctures, or worse.

National Anti Boredom Month 😁

Is your dog barking for no obvious reason? Have they started digging up your garden? Is your puppy chewing up your shoes or the couch? Are they constantly begging you to play while you're trying to get some work done?

In most cases, there is a simple explanation: your dog is bored!

Dogs get bored just like we do, so it's important to provide them with both physical and mental stimulation! Over the next few days you'll see appropriate ways to help them burn that extra energy so your flower beds, shoes, and sofa won't become unfortunate casualties.

Try out a few with your dog to find out what kind of activities they enjoy the most 🧡
