As we head back to work today following the state funeral of our Society Patron, Her Majesty The Queen, many of us are still reflecting on our emotions having watched such a solemn and intense occasion.
A part of yesterday’s ceremony that caused a lump in the throat for many was the sight of The Queen’s Stud Groom, Terry Pendry, stood on the flower-strewn Long Walk at Windsor Castle with Her Majesty’s riding pony, Emma, to greet her funeral cortège. Fell pony Emma was wearing Her Majesty’s usual tack, and one of her headscarves was folded across the saddle.
Terry Pendry LVO BEM has been The Queen’s Stud Groom and Manager since 1994, and he was frequently to be seen at Her Majesty’s side, either watching her beloved equines compete, or accompanying her on a hack. Terry took up the role after retiring from the Household Cavalry where he served The Queen as senior riding instructor for more than 20 years.
When British Horse magazine interviewed Terry in 2016 on the occasion of her Majesty’s 90th birthday celebrations, we asked him where he saw himself in five years’ time - and his reply was that he hoped to serve the Sovereign for as long as he was required. ❤️
