British farmers are renowned for the care they provide to their animals.

But of course, they couldn’t do it without an army of farm vets, who help them to keep their livestock in the best possible health.

Farm vets are often called upon to come out at all times of the day and night and in all weathers.

This is a part of farming the general public often don’t see, but it is one that is integral to the food our farmers produce.

So, we just wanted to say a big thank you to all the hard-working farm vets out there.

Our farmers need you – it’s as simple as that!

Earlier this month, we looked at the best ways to prevent scour in calves. But that might not always be possible.

So, what do you do if you suspect an outbreak in your herd?

Our top tips include:

- Always consult a vet
A vet will be able to accurately diagnose the condition and identify the cause, enabling the best treatment plan to be put in place.

- Rehydration
Diarrhoea causes a loss of vital nutrients, minerals and fluids, which need replacing as soon as the condition is spotted. Oral rehydration will help replace these and should be administered straight away and throughout the recovery period.

- Quarantine
Quarantine any affected animals to minimise the chances of it spreading.

- Keep the calf warm
Keeping the calf warm will help it conserve energy which it can then use to fight the infection.

The best laid scheme’s o’ mice an’ men gang aft agley!

Yes, tomorrow is Burns Night, a wonderful celebration of Scotland’s best known poet Rabbie Burns, and with it the traditional fare of nips, tatties, and haggis!

Love it or hate it, haggis has been sustaining hardy Scots for centuries with its unique blend of oats, suet, onion, spices, and of course, sheep offal.

Although originally a way of using the cheaper parts of the animal, it is now considered a delicacy by many and a centrepiece of Scottish culture.

So, why not raise a wee dram to the great poet himself and all the hard-working Scottish farmers who raise the sheep to make the haggis?

Wherever you are, have a fantastic Burns Night from everyone at MSD.

With the USA celebrating National Pie Day today, that got us thinking … What is Britain’s favourite pie?

Could it be the humble pork pie – the staple of the summer picnic?

Chicken and leak? Or perhaps a filling steak and kidney pudding? (Is the even a pie?)

Or maybe it’s that gastropub favourite, steak and ale.

Whichever it is, when you bite into your favourite pie, you have a farmer to thank.

Without farmers, there would be no pies. And that's not a world we want to live in!

Let us know in the comments below what your favourite pie is!

20/01/2025

As winter progresses, challenges around keeping dairy heifers and cows housed in a hygienic environment can lead to an increase in the incidents of scours.
The damage caused by this condition – which can result from viruses, parasites and bacteria – leaves calves unable to absorb nutrients efficiently, resulting in reduced performance at best or in severe cases, death.
As a market-leading manufacturer of animal health products, we know that the best way to prevent scours is by vaccination and judicious environmental management.
Here are our top tips for minimising the risk of scour during calving.
1. Ensure sheds are hygienic
Pathogens that cause scour exist in the environment and in the faeces of older animals that have developed immunity. So, ensure housing is kept clean and dry, and reduce draughts.
2. Optimise colostrum management
Colostrum is essential for newborn calves to develop antibodies and therefore fight infection, so ensuring they get the right levels will mean they are in the best possible position to fight infection.
3. Vaccination
Vaccinate the cow against rotavirus, coronavirus, E. coli and Cryptosporidium prior to calving to guard against the common causes of scour via ingestion of colostrum and transition milk.
4. Keep youngstock in age groups
To minimise newborn exposure to pathogens from older animals, keep them in age-related groups.

Colostrum, or first milk produced by the mother after birth, is high in nutrients and antibodies. A newborn calf lacks disease protection because antibodies do not pass across the cow’s placenta to the fetus.

This is why colostrum feeding is so important! 🐄🐄

Make sure you’re giving your calves the best possible start and feed them colostrum from day 1! ❤ ❤
