** Warning images of open wound **
As many of us know, horses love to get themselves into trouble! Unfortunately last year this lovely mare sustained a deep wound to her hind leg which exposed her cannon bone. One of our vets, Steph, promptly attended but, despite being fresh, the wound wasn't able to be stitched. This is due to the tissue deficit. As such the wound needed to heal by second intention. Such wounds take time to heal, but given time and considering the below factors that may delay healing, they will come together:
๐ Location, proximity to joints and movement
๐Bone exposure
๐Contamination
๐ Tissue deficit
๐Proud flesh formation
Vets Steph and Michelle performed many bandage changes and, as the tissue deficit filled in, proud flesh formed which required trimming (central images). As you can see the wound healed over the course of 12 weeks and the mare was able to be turned out again and continue her ridden career!
If your horse sustains a wound it's important to contact us as soon as possible to assess the wound to give your horse the best chance at a speedy recovery!
