This gorgeous chap came to see Dani for his Watch Me Grow appointment yesterday. He came in and got weighed, had lots and lots of fuss ....and then fell asleep 😴. Such a chilled chappy 🐕

We can't wait to see him again next month 🥰🥰

Jesper was absolutely super as always! This lovable lad donated for the 6th time! Jesper wanted alllllll the treats and wasnt shy in taking them from his auntie Jess😋🤣

Rossi is an amazing doggo and he donated for the tenth time! He went away with a special Pet Blood Bank lead and water bottle! Always a pleasure seeing you,handsome chap 🥰

Wilbur was wonderful and donated for the second time! Very,very gorgeous boy and gentle giant 😍

Commonly, you might hear your dog ‘gag’ before they cough or when they are about to be sick. In most cases, your dog gagging is harmless, but there are times when it can be an indicator of something more serious and intervention may be required.

Gagging can be caused by inflammation around the larynx, as a result of infection or an underlying medical condition.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐈 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐦𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧?

As owners of course we do not want our pets to be in pain, but our dogs often will hide their symptoms very effectively, or cannot easily communicate there is an issue.

Pain in dogs may become apparent through physical symptoms, behavioural changes or mobility issues – sometimes the signs can be very subtle.

Physical symptoms can include tight or twitching muscles, shaking or trembling, an arched back, holding their head low or panting. Behavioural changes may include not wanting to be touched, excessive licking, vocalizing more, restlessness, aggression or changes in sleeping patterns. Mobility issues can include limping, walking slower or a refusal to walk, reluctance to jump or use stairs, or signs of discomfort lying down or getting up.

There can be many reasons a dog can be in pain, from acute injury to more chronic conditions. This can include: damage to joints, soft tissue injuries, back problems, dental disease, ear infections, skin problems, urinary tract issues, stomach upset, cancer or surgeries.

If you think your dog is suffering or showing any signs of pain, please contact the practice for our veterinary surgeons for an appointment to discuss appropriate pain relief. Once our team have examined your pet, we may recommend further investigations to help us determine the cause of their discomfort and ensure they are on the most effective treatment – this can include blood sampling, x-rays or ultrasound imaging.

𝐌𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠…𝐖𝐡𝐲?

Panting in dogs can be a completely normal behaviour, but it could also indicate underlying issues. There are several reasons why a dog may pant, including excitement, stress, pain, medicine, heatstroke, medical conditions and more.

Should your dog begin panting, it is important to take note of what they are currently doing, their activity level, as well as the inside or outside temperature. You should look for other symptoms, like lethargy, inappetence, coughing, or anything that you would deem different to their usual behaviour. It is helpful to also pay attention to your dog’s panting sounds, if it seems forced or noisy, this is not normal.

When in doubt, if you are concerned about your dog’s breathing, don’t wait and contact the practice as soon as possible for advice.

An ultrasound is a diagnostic procedure that enables us to examine the shape and size of internal structures, or even their blood flow. Ultrasounds are a painless procedure, but does require hair to be clipped to allow the probe to have contact with the skin layer.

Ultrasound scans may be recommended if your pet requires investigation for symptoms such as vomiting, having difficulty going to the toilet, a bloated abdomen, weight loss and more. The information you provide your veterinary surgeon is highly valuable to support the investigation of your pets condition alongside the clinical exam from the veterinary surgeon.

In the warmer months, we may go to the freezer for an iced treat to help us cool off, but is it ok for dogs to also enjoy these frozen goodies?

Yes - dogs can have ice cubes! However, keep in mind ice cubes can pose a choking risk when our pets are whizzing around playing with them, so you may wish to consider giving them crushed ice as opposed to full cubes. Giving dogs ice does not provide much effect on their core temperature, but they may enjoy crunching them or playing with them in their water.

Dogs may also enjoy other cold treats, such as food dispensing toys filled with frozen vegetables, chicken or fish stock, or other dog safe recipes. These treats will also provide a good enrichment activity in the warmer weather when you might not be able to walk or play as normal - but remember to adjust their normal food portion for these extra calories!

In terms of ice cream, many sellers now offer dog friendly options, which are not as rich and shouldn’t upset their tummies – as long as you stick to these dog friendly options, your dog can definitely join in at ice cream time.

Previous guidance for pets with suspected heat stroke was to douse them in tepid water to prevent cooling them down too quickly and minimize the risk that they go into shock. However, this has now been updated and the heat stroke guidance catchphrase is now ‘Get them wet, straight to the vet’

Symptoms of heat stroke can include drooling and panting, potentially unconsciousness and seizures. It is important to pick up on the signs early and actively cool your pet whilst you get in contact with your veterinary practice.

We’ve done a lot of celebrating recently for our first ever donor to reach 40 donations (rightly so) but it’s also bittersweet because this was Sharwood’s final donation 😥 He’s now off to enjoy his well-earned retirement and live a life of luxurious leisure (spoiler: he already was!).

This is because when dogs turn 8, they retire from donating, so we always need more amazing dogs to register as donors and continue the legacy of their friends by following in their paw prints 🐾
