*SEASONAL CANINE ILLNESS (SCI)

🗓️ SCI occurs in the Autumn, primarily August and September although cases have been seen as late as November depending on the weather.

🔬Researchers do not fully understand the cause of SCI, but the biggest suggestion is that the dogs lick their paws after a woodland walk and thus ingest any harvest mites that might be stuck inbetween their paws. The idea of algae and fungus has been widely ruled out but again, this can’t written in stone just yet.

🪲 Harvest mites are tiny orange insects found in long grass and dense foliage. In late summer and autumn, they like to climb up long grass and jump on passing mammals and they are commonly seen on ears, chin, lips, armpits, belly and paws.

🌳 The main symptoms of SCI are usually seen within three days (72 hours) of being in a woodland area. Your dog will normally show the following behaviours:
❗️vomiting
❗️diarrhoea
❗️tiredness
❗️stomach pain
❗️muscle tremors
❗️high temperature

💊 Although there is not currently a specific cure, some of the symptoms can be alleviated with anti-sickness medication and if antibiotic treatment is given QUICKLY, most dogs do recover from SCI. Visiting a vet ASAP if you notice any of the above symptoms could mean the difference between life and death!

🐶 You can reduce the risk of your dog getting SCI by:
❗️WASHING YOUR DOGS PAWS THOROUGHLY AFTER WALKS - make sure you wash inbetween each paw!
❗️You could put a jacket on your dog which may help prevent the mites being able to attach themselves to belly and chest.
❗️Use Frontline Spray instead of a spot on if a woodland walk is your regular routine.

🗺️ SCI HAS BEEN DETECTED IN CLUMBER PARK, SHERWOOD FOREST AND HARWELL WOODS IN EVERTON - Please try and be extremely vigilant in these woods until there has been a ground frost!

Emmi-pet is not a substitute for necessary veterinary procedures. If a vet has recommended tooth extractions or a dental scale and polish, we cannot perform Emmi-pet treatments until after the necessary care has been provided.

🦷 Emmi-pet treatments may require multiple sessions to loosen hardened plaque and tartar effectively. Results are impressive, making your dog healthier and happier, but patience is necessary!

⏰ Please Note: We limit each session to 30 minutes. If a complete cleaning cannot be done in one session, subsequent sessions will be necessary.

💜 I’m back an after incredible few days away for our anniversary! We Hit Dunkirk, Bruges and then onto the Nürburgring! It was such a fab road trip through some beautiful countries! 🥰
