It’s been a very hot week 🥵 just a reminder about how quick dogs can get heat stroke from the sun ☀️ 🐶

☀️❌ HEATSTROKE ❌☀️

☀️🐶☀️🐶

Just a reminder about how important it is to keep your pets cool and comfortable in the hotter weather!!

1. Make sure there's plenty of water available For your furry friends

2. Never leave your dog (or any pet) alone in a car – even with the windows open

3. Avoid exercising your dog during the heat of the day. If it's very warm or if your dog struggles in the heat, avoid taking them for a walk altogether.

4. Small pets will also need plenty of shade and may benefit from being brought indoors in the hot weather

5. Animals can suffer fatal heatstroke within minutes. Obvious signs of heatstroke include collapse, excessive panting or breathing heavily, and dribbling. If you suspect your animal is suffering, remove them to a cool place, wet their coat and contact a vet immediately. Avoid overcooling – especially small pets

🐴☠️❌ RAGWORT POISONING ❌☠️🐴

Ragwort is a common w**d that grows on wasteland, road verges and railway embankments with distinctive bushy yellow flowers and rosette leaves.

Due to its bitter taste, most horses won’t immediately choose to eat ragwort if it's growing among their grazing – but this isn’t a guarantee. Horses will eat ragwort if nothing else is available, accidentally or where parts of the plant have wilted and become palatable. Ragwort loses its bitter taste if it’s cut, dried and found in forage, for example, hay, but it doesn’t lose any of its toxicity and still remains a danger. Therefore, it's advised to remove all elements of ragwort from land used to graze horses or forage production, including when it's dead and dried.

Please call us immediately if you think your horse has ingested ragwort!

What should I do if I find a baby bird on the ground?

It’s really hard to not just think that these tiny creatures need saving and brought inside but actually the best thing you can do if you find a fledgeling is to bring any predators inside and supervise from the house or far enough away not to scare the parents.

If there is no sign of the parents ring a wildlife charity or ourselves BEFORE you lift the bird unless it is obviously injured.

Fledgelings will not be fully able to fly, they may wobble and be unbalanced but all of this can be quite normal as they find their way in the big bad world. The parents are normally supervising but can disappear if humans are interfering.

We’re always happy to give advice over the phone.
