Lovely to receive this photo of Woody, who gained his 1 & 2 Bronze Progression Grades last week showing excellence in a strong freeze indication at a distance from his handler Sam from Dogz Squad https://www.facebook.com/share/1EfZjDxSJg/?mibextid=wwXIfr …… whilst there was plenty of distraction around him. Couldn’t be prouder.

Thank you to UK Sniffer Dogs for this……..

🐾 Why Do We Use a Red Kong in Scent Training?

At UK Sniffer Dogs, we often use a Red Kong as the target scent for one very important reason: dogs can’t see the colour red! 👀 This means they rely entirely on their amazing sense of smell to locate it, which is exactly what we want to encourage in scent training.

🔍 Here’s why it’s such a great tool:
• Builds Nose-First Searching: By removing the visual element, dogs are naturally guided to use their most powerful sense—their nose!
• Readily Available: Let’s face it, who hasn’t got a Kong? It’s a common item in most dog-owning households, making it an accessible and practical tool for scent training.
• Low Residual Odour: Unlike oils or stronger scents, the Red Kong doesn’t leave behind too much residual odour. This makes it the perfect training scent, preventing contamination in the environment and ensuring clean, focused searches.
• Great Associations with Rewards: Many dogs already have a strong, positive history with a Red Kong, as owners often use them for mental stimulation by stuffing them with treats. This familiarity and positive association make dogs eager to search for it during scent training.

🌟 Starting with a Red Kong helps lay the foundation for confident, nose-driven searches, building skills that can be applied to any scent later on.

Ready to try it out? Grab a Red Kong, get your dog sniffing, and let the fun begin! 🐕

Lovely training video here of little Ellie, currently on our UK Sniffer Dog Bronze Progression classes, here she is using the air currents to find the hide (a small piece of red Kong) and does an excellent job, with a lovely positive indication too…

Happy New Year we look forward to continuing to work with many and new faces ###

A Little About Me & My Services

I am a qualified Canine Trainer & Behaviourist working in North Wales. I qualified from the British College of Canine Studies with a distinction in Advanced Level 4 Canine Behaviour, all BCCS courses are accredited & approved by Pet Education, Training & Behaviour Council. I hold a certificate in Dog Law, Canine First Aid and hold an enhanced DBS.

I have had dogs in my life for over 18 years, my first dog ‘Penny’ a black Labrador in many ways was my saviour, she ‘gave me her paw, when I needed a hand’ & so she is the inspiration behind ‘Paws for Thought & I Will Give You a Hand’

Over the years there has been several Springer Spaniels and a little Jack Russel who was in desperate need of re-homing; I have always expected a high level of obedience from our dogs, irrespective of which canine sports we undertook or indeed wherever we took them. Isla, is my young 2 year old Labrador and together we are learning the art of agility, she is full of energy & enthusiasm, with a high instinctual drive, guided with respect and her biddable nature to please.

The psychology of dogs has always fascinated me & so my journey to become a Behaviourist began.
