I do it to make dogs happy!

12/11/2025

I’ve repeatedly shown Islay that when I need to do something like put her harness on, look at part of her body, or administer medicine, I will calmly wait until she sits in front of me before I proceed.

Often she needs to do a bit of a wiggle, grab a toy, or take a moment to process before she’s ready but I give her that time and don’t chase her around or grab her.

By giving her the option to opt in and opt out of these things that can be uncomfortable for her, I’m teaching her that she can be confident in such situations.

Cooperative care isn’t about avoiding doing things they don’t like, it’s about making sure that they feel safe whatever is being asked of them.

Have I trained Islay to be used to getting a plastic bag on her paw? No. But have I trained her that she can trust me? Yes.

“I’d like my dog to walk on the lead without pulling me”

No problem.

We’re going to look at his whole life and make some changes.

Then we’re going to add in the training.

Good dog training is about setting you and your dog up to be successful.

That’s when the big changes happen.

DM me to get training for your dog that really works.

A huge well done to Bailey and his owner on their brilliant progress.

Want to know what the first thing I teach in every training package is?

Eye contact.

Focus, engagement, checking in, learning that good stuff happens when they pay attention to you.

Practise it in your house, practise it in your garden, practise it on your walks.

Here’s your starting guide to building an engaged relationship with your dog - all other training flows from this.

Huge resource guarding progress!

Sam’s owner sent me this video of him calmly interacting with her having just received a new toy.

In the past, getting a new toy would have caused Sam to run away, to growl at his owner, and to wet himself when she was in the same room as him due to stress.

It didn’t matter if she tried to offer him treats, he was too stressed to eat and too scared to release his toy.

Now, he is happy to be near her, actively comes to her with a toy, will put the toy down to take treats, and is generally a much happier dog!

Going from growling to calm is a huge improvement in everyone’s life.

It’s OK to say “No!”

Just because someone is a pet care professional or has owned dogs all their lives doesn’t mean that they understand your dog and their specific needs, particularly if you’re working on a behaviour modification plan.

Just in the past few months I’ve heard from clients:

“The vet dragged my dog through to the back room - he was so scared he went to the toilet on himself”

“My neighbour told me I should just “let dogs be dogs” and not try to train them or keep them from running up to everyone they see”

“He had such a bad experience at the groomers that he now won’t get in the car incase we’re going back there”

“The trainer held out their hand for my dog’s lead and then forcefully put them into a position - now they’re scared of people”

It’s not easy to stand up for your dog but remember - it’s ok to ask people to explain exactly what they’re going to do with your dog - and if you think that won’t work for your dog then say “No!”.

A good pet professional will always work with you to create a plan that is right for your dog.
