A Very exciting new arrival for Thomas Veterinary Services ...Micron faecal worm egg count test kit!

We can now provide a new service for your horses, a faecal worm egg count, in house or at the yard, with a quick turn around and results sent to you. This service can determine if your horse has worms, if so, which ones and whether or not they need worming.
The optimum time to perform worm egg counts is in the main grazing season between early March and late October.

Case study of the week

With the weather getting warmer again and spring beginning to arrive, we thought it would be worth reminding people to be on 'Laminitis Watch!' Most laminitis is caused by a degree on insulin dysregulation. This can be due to a variety of things but most commonly obesity, increase in sugar/grass intake and in some cases steroid treatment. Each thing has an additive effect on the horses risk of laminitis.

Meet Lenny, He had a 'steroid induced laminitis' in May last year. As he is a big horse, his poorly feet were under a lot of strain and he was in a bad way. However, with the commitment of the owner, farrier and vet who worked as a team, he is doing well and now walking out again. Hopefully we can return him to the field this year. The pictures show the difference in his x rays and the videos in comments, show the difference in his comfort a few months apart.

Some top tips to avoid laminitis:
🐎Regular exercise and appropriate diet
💉Blood test to check insulin levels and medication if needed
🥕 Do not enter spring in an overweight condition
📉Weigh tape your horse monthly

🔑 Prevention is key

Does your horse suffer from sweet itch?

Did you know there is a vaccine which, along side good management, can help ease the symptoms?

It is best given before the sweet itch season starts and is 2 injections 2 weeks apart. Therefore February is the perfect time to consider this.

For more information or to book your horse in for the vaccine, then please don't hesitate to contact us.

Case of the Week….

(Warning some graphic photos.)

This is Trev the donkey.
He presented with a huge sarcoid on the corner of his eye which had rapidly become out of control. As well as being a nuisance to Trev, there was a worry the sarcoid was going to have a detrimental effect on Trevs eye as well as being very tricky to remove!

We sedated a very reluctant Trev and managed to inject a chemotherapy drug into the base of the sarcoid as well as get a couple of sutures around it.
2 weeks later we went from picture 1 to picture 2!
We repeated the injections on an increasingly difficult patient! And this time managed to get a lamb castration band around the root.
A further 2 weeks later we ended up with the huge crater in picture 4!! It’s what we wanted, the sadcoid was gone, but the huge hole that was left was a little unnerving!!
However, the owners did a great job of keeping it clean and applying Manila honey spray to the hole and within a couple more weeks Trev looked like her had never had a sarcoid there!!

Success!!

Everyone was so pleased!

However, the take home message of this great case is that the owners were warned that sarcoids can often grow back and sometimes more aggressively than before. Because of the location of Trevs sarcoid, we did t have much margin to play with when removing it. So around a month or so later the owner noticed a small area of ulceration and raised lump at the site of the previous sarcoid… the worry was the sarcoidosis was growing back. 2nd and 3rd last pictures

Without hesitation we sedated Trev again and injected the tiny lump with a little more chemotherapy drug. The last picture is the picture last week. The ‘lump’ appears to be coming away and hopefully we have caught those last few sarcoid cells before they become a real problem again. Watch this space for further updates.

It’s so important to keep an eye (excuse the pun!) on these sites of previous sarcoids and the ongoing management is vital to prevent them becoming a problem again.
