We hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year!

We’d like to take a moment to inform you about a few updates we’ve made starting from January 2025. These changes have been carefully considered to help us, as a small independent veterinary practice, continue offering the personal, friendly, and professional service that you expect and deserve.

The key updates are as follows:

A £100 upfront payment will be required for all new clients at the time of booking.

Full payment will be required upfront for all Export paperwork.

All vetting services (2-Stage and 5-Stage) will require full payment upfront.

Additionally, we kindly remind you that invoices should be settled within 30 days of receipt. This is crucial to help us maintain the high level of service we are committed to providing.

We hope you understand the reasons behind these changes, and we truly appreciate your ongoing support. We look forward to another year of working with you and your pets!

We hope you’re all keeping safe and warm in this snowy weather ⛄️
As it is has been so cold, with temperatures below freezing last night, we thought it would be useful for some top tips on how to try and prevent your horse from getting an impaction colic. 🐴

💩 Being stabled for longer periods of time can lead to colic as they are moving around less. It is important to monitor the frequency and consistency of your horses droppings. Are they producing less than normal? Are they dry or hard? If there any abnormalities please give us a call and we can have a chat.

💧 Horses tend to drink less when it is cold which can lead to an impaction colic. It is important to check water buckets regularly and remove any ice from them. You can also add warm water to encourage them to drink.

🪣 You can also encourage your horse to drink more by adding some warm water to their hard feed.

If you have any concerns please give us a call ☎️ on 07305307217

***Update on Coco's Gastric Ulcers***

For those of you who came to the gastroscope talk in August, we thought we would give you an update on how her treatment was getting on. Coco has had 6 weeks of treatment for both Squamous and Glandular Ulcers.
We rescoped her last week and are pleased to say that the squamous ulcers are all gone! (See photos). We have seen significant improvement in her glandular ulcers too (the area is still reddened but less defined areas). The plan is now to continue to treat these for a further 4 weeks and then do another rescope.

Most importantly, there has been a huge improvement in her behaviour. Loading is now no longer an issue, she isn't napping and she is no longer resisting when the leg is applied. Watch this space for her next update...

Alot of you will have already met our new vet Lucy. She has settled in great and is enjoying meeting all of your horses. Lucy will be manning the fort for the next two weeks and is happy to help with any problems you have as well as routine work. However, with us being a man down, please try to give us as much notice as possible on routine visits, so we can fit you in without running Lucy off her feet as emergencies always take priority.

Laminitis ...
The last few weeks, with the increase in sugars in the grass as a result of warmer days and colder nights, we have had an increase in the number of cases of horses suffering with laminitis.
For this reason, we thought it would be useful to do a laminitis information post!

Laminitis is an extremely painful inflammatory condition affecting the horses feet. Within the healthy horses’ foot, the sensitive tissues interlock together within the foot allowing the pedal bone to be suspended into the hoof. During laminitis, these sensitive tissues become inflamed and weakened which can result in the pedal bone sinking or rotating. This can then result in the following clinical signs:
- Strong digital pulses
- A hoof which is hot to touch for hours
- A pottery gait
- Shifting weight between feet
- All 4 feet can be affected so be sure to check all 4!
Laminitis is much easier to prevent than it is to treat so it is important that preventative management is in place. This can include
- Weight management
- Strip grazing and muzzle grazing
- Avoid turning out during peak times of the day when the sugar level will be higher
- Testing for underlying endocrinal diseases such as EMS and cushings
- Monitoring blood insulin to check when horses are most at risk to developing laminitis
- Foot radiographs to assess for pedal bone changes which can help with remedial farriery

📞📞 If you have any questions or concerns please get in touch with one of our vets, Hannah or Lucy.

The sooner you catch laminitis the better.

A Very exciting new arrival for Thomas Veterinary Services ...Micron faecal worm egg count test kit!

We can now provide a new service for your horses, a faecal worm egg count, in house or at the yard, with a quick turn around and results sent to you. This service can determine if your horse has worms, if so, which ones and whether or not they need worming.
The optimum time to perform worm egg counts is in the main grazing season between early March and late October.
For more information, please get in touch.

Case study of the week

With the weather getting warmer again and spring beginning to arrive, we thought it would be worth reminding people to be on 'Laminitis Watch!' Most laminitis is caused by a degree on insulin dysregulation. This can be due to a variety of things but most commonly obesity, increase in sugar/grass intake and in some cases steroid treatment. Each thing has an additive effect on the horses risk of laminitis.

Meet Lenny, He had a 'steroid induced laminitis' in May last year. As he is a big horse, his poorly feet were under a lot of strain and he was in a bad way. However, with the commitment of the owner, farrier and vet who worked as a team, he is doing well and now walking out again. Hopefully we can return him to the field this year. The pictures show the difference in his x rays and the videos in comments, show the difference in his comfort a few months apart.

Some top tips to avoid laminitis:
🐎Regular exercise and appropriate diet
💉Blood test to check insulin levels and medication if needed
🥕 Do not enter spring in an overweight condition
📉Weigh tape your horse monthly

🔑 Prevention is key

Please get in touch for further information and to a discuss a health plan for your horse.
