How buoyancy helps in dog Hydrotherapy!
Hydrotherapy really is a completely unique form of rehabilitation, it relies on the correct application of warmed water which has several natural properties that therapists use in order to treat dogs!
One of which is the Buoyancy 🛟
🐾 1. Reduces Weight Bearing on Joints
Buoyancy counteracts gravity, which means when a dog is submerged in water, it weighs less.
This reduces stress and pressure on joints, bones, and muscles, making it easier and less painful for dogs to move—especially those with arthritis, hip dysplasia, or after surgery.
For example, water can support up to 90% of a dog’s body weight, depending on the depth. So a 50 kg dog might feel like it only weighs 5–10 kg in deep water.
🐾 2. Enables Safe, Low-Impact Exercise
Dogs can move more freely and perform a greater range of motion in water.
Because of buoyancy, they can exercise without jarring impacts, making hydrotherapy ideal for dogs recovering from injury or surgery.
🐾 3. Promotes Muscle Strength Without Overloading
Even though water reduces the weight the dog has to bear, it still provides resistance.
This lets dogs build or maintain muscle without risking further injury, thanks to buoyancy offsetting the impact forces.
🐾 4. Improves Confidence in Mobility-Impaired Dogs
Dogs that are weak, old, or recovering may be fearful of walking or moving on land.
Buoyancy gives them support and stability, often restoring confidence to move and exercise.
🐾 5. Enhances Balance and Proprioception
Buoyancy allows dogs to practice coordination and regain control of their limbs in a safe, supportive environment.
It's especially useful in neurological cases, where relearning movement patterns is key.
