Caring for older horses during the colder months requires extra attention to their nutritional needs. Here’s how to keep your senior equine happy and healthy this winter:

1️⃣ Provide Easy-to-Digest Forage
Senior horses may struggle with chewing hay. Offer softer hay or replace some forage with soaked hay cubes or beet pulp.

2️⃣ Choose a Senior Feed
Senior feeds are formulated to be high in fiber, calories, and essential nutrients. They’re easier to chew and digest, providing balanced nutrition.

3️⃣ Keep Them Warm with Calories
Older horses often need more calories to maintain body condition in winter. Add in oils such as soya or linseed for extra energy.

4️⃣ Check Teeth and Digestion
Regular dental checks are crucial. Ensure their teeth can handle hay, and monitor for signs of poor digestion, such as weight loss or undigested food in manure.

5️⃣ Warm Water is a Must
Seniors are more prone to dehydration. Offer warm water to encourage drinking, and consider adding soaked feeds to increase moisture intake.
