It's been enrichment galore this afternoon and we start as we mean to go on! 🦴

This handsome 11 month old Visla started off a little nervous but within minutes of being in daycare was pouncing round and making as many new pup pals as possible! 🤪💕

As we say goodbye to another year, we want to thank each and every one of you for being part of our journey. Whether it’s been through wagging tails, training sessions, or just the support you’ve shown, we’re so grateful to have you with us.

Firework season is on the horizon! 🎆✨

Here are some tips on how to keep your dog safe during fireworks:

🐾 Create a safe space for your dog to hide – whether that’s a crate, den, or even behind the couch – wherever they feel comfortable.

🎶 Play calming music to mask the sound of the fireworks.

🚫 Avoid letting them go outside when fireworks are going off.

🪟 Draw curtains and blinds to avoid the visuals.

💖 Stay with your dog if they’re stressed; they could hurt themselves in a panic.

🚪 Make sure gardens and doors are secure to avoid any absconding attempts.

📋 Ensure their microchips and dog tags are up to date, just in case they escape.

😌 Your calm and relaxed energy will help keep them settled.

🦴 Offer long-lasting chew treats, kongs, lick mats, or snuffle mats to keep them distracted and busy.

🚽 Prepare for the odd toileting accident – grab the mop and clean up without punishing. Stress does that! 😅

🧥 Adaptil collars and thunder shirts can work wonders for calming dogs.

🐾 Always seek advice from your vet if needed.

And most importantly...

👐 Comfort your dogs! You cannot reinforce fear – that’s a common misconception.

What I Do as a Trainer & What Daycare Training is All About! 🐾

Being a dog trainer isn’t just about teaching dogs tricks (although that’s always fun! 🎉). My job is to help owners and their dogs build a happy, healthy relationship based on trust, understanding, and kindness. As a force-free, positive reinforcement trainer, I use reward-based techniques to make learning enjoyable for your dog—because who doesn’t love a win-win situation? 🐶💛

At Happy Hounds Training Academy (HHTA), i offer a range of services, from 1-2-1 consultations to daycare training. One service I’m especially proud of is Daycare Training—a fab option for busy owners who want to give their pups the benefit of tailored training while they’re at work or out and about.

What is Daycare Training?

Think of it as a “Take & Train” service where your dog gets one-on-one time with me during their daycare day. While they’re having fun at daycare, I’ll work with them on specific skills, behaviours, or challenges you’d like to address. This could be anything from basic manners like sit and recall to confidence-building exercises, reactivity or leash skills.

But it doesn’t stop there! At the end of the day, I’ll send you home with homework—a breakdown of what we worked on, progress updates, and tips to continue reinforcing the training at home. This keeps you in the loop and ensures consistency for your pup.

🎄 Trigger Stacking at Christmas: What It Is and Why It Matters for Your Dog 🐾

Christmas is a time of excitement, but for our dogs, it can be overwhelming. All the festive fun can unintentionally lead to trigger stacking.

What is Trigger Stacking?
Trigger stacking happens when your dog is exposed to multiple stressors (or "triggers") close together. On their own, these triggers might not cause a big reaction, but when they pile up, it can push your dog over their threshold, leading to behaviours like barking, growling, pacing, or shutting down completely.

Imagine you’re having a stressful day – your alarm didn’t go off, you spilled coffee on your outfit, and then someone cuts you off in traffic. You’d likely snap! That’s trigger stacking in a nutshell. Dogs experience the same thing.

Why Does Christmas Make Trigger Stacking More Likely?
The festive period is full of changes and surprises that can fill up your dog’s "stress bucket." These might include:
🎅 Extra visitors or family members (especially if your dog is wary of strangers).
🎄 New decorations and smells – a tree suddenly in the lounge might be very confusing!
🎁 Wrapping paper and noisy toys creating unfamiliar sounds.
✨ Flashing lights or moving ornaments.
🍗 Tempting foods that they’re told they can’t have.
📢 Loud crowds

All these small events build up. While your dog might be okay with one or two, too many can stack together and overwhelm them, even if they seem minor to us.

What Does Trigger Stacking Look Like?
Keep an eye out for signs that your dog’s stress levels are climbing:

Increased panting or pacing.

Lip licking, yawning, or "shaking off" like they’re wet.

Avoiding interaction or trying to leave the room.

Barking or growling when they usually wouldn’t.

By understanding trigger stacking, you can start to see the world from your dog’s perspective. It’s not about the big, obvious triggers – it’s about the little things adding up.

Give your dog a little extra patience and understanding this Christmas – while we’re enjoying the festivities, they might just be trying to figure out why the living room suddenly smells like a forest and strangers are sitting on their sofa! 🐶🎄

A huge shoutout to Emily for absolutely nailing Secret Santa this year with the most thoughtful gift for Georgie! 😍 She surprised her with a Harry the Maltese cushion and socks, and we’re all obsessed.

Harry, one of our regulars at daycare, has stolen all of our hearts—especially Georgie’s! 💕 His amazing mum, Vicki, boards him regularly, and he even joins us for occasional training. Whenever Harry visits, Georgie practically cradles him like the royalty he is, so this gift couldn’t be more perfect.

Apologies for the late post—we’ve been absolutely bursting at the seams with festive cheer and pups in the cutest holiday costumes! 🎅🐶

Our first day of Christmas celebrations has been a tail-wagging success! From delicious pup cups to present box scent enrichment, a visit from the one and only Santa Paws 🎁🐾, and plenty of joyful doggy play, it’s been a day to remember.
