๐Ÿฐ This week is Rabbit Awareness Week, and this year's theme is 'Healthy Diet, Happy Bunnies', so today, we wanted to share a little more about the importance of a balanced diet.

Rabbits require a diet based on 80% grass or feeding hay, 15% greens, 5% good-quality pellets or nuggets (around one egg cup twice a day), and fresh water.

Feeding nuggets ensures your rabbit eats a balanced diet, as it won't have the option to 'selective feed' by picking its favourite parts out of a mixed diet.

Feeding the correct diet is probably the single most important way to ensure a healthy and long-lived rabbit. Here are six top tips for ensuring your rabbit has a balanced diet...

๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿ’ง You should ensure that your rabbit always has access to fresh, clean drinking water.

๐Ÿ‡๐ŸŒฟ When providing food for your rabbit, fresh grass is the preferred choice, but when not available, hay is a good substitute that is available all year round and provides them with the nutrients they require.

๐Ÿ‡๐ŸŒพHay provides lots of long-strand fibre, keeping your rabbit's gut moving. It is also the closest thing to a natural diet. Rabbits would naturally graze all day in the wild, so please ensure your rabbit has an unlimited supply.

๐Ÿ‡ ๐Ÿฅ— Complete rabbit food is also available, but it should not be used as a replacement for hay. Please use it as a nutritional supplement.

๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿฅฆ Many plants can be safely enjoyed by rabbits, including broccoli, parsley, spring greens, and dandelions. They also love the leaves from an apple or hazel tree. When feeding them plants, you should keep the portion sizes to a minimum.

๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿฅ• Fruits should be counted as a treat for your rabbit as they are high in sugar. Your rabbit may enjoy a grape, slice of apple, slice of orange or carrots.

Our Pet Health for Life plan is designed to make your life easier. It includes all the doses your pet needs for year-round flea treatment, ensuring you never have to worry about missing their treatment again!

When it comes to parasites in cats and dogs, regular treatments reduce discomfort for your pet and possibly yourself. In addition, regular treatment helps prevent disease from spreading between animals and also stops some diseases in people. Ignoring the problem will only make things worse and may end up affecting not just your pet but your home, too.

Here are some ways to tell if your cat or dog has fleas:
โšช Bite marks and scabs
โšช Excessive scratching
โšช Itchy bite marks on your skin
โšช Tiny black specks in your petโ€™s fur or on their bedding

Eggs can lie dormant for months, so you need to treat your cat or dog for fleas all year round.

๐Ÿฅช๐ŸŒž Today marks National Picnic Day, signalling the impending arrival of summer and the embrace of outdoor activities with freshly made picnics.

Imagine the joy of your dog joining in the fun on this National Picnic Day. You can prepare a dog-friendly packed lunch to include with your picnic, as many human foods are toxic or can cause gastrointestinal problems for dogs.

Ensuring your pet's safety is paramount. We recommend packing regular treats or even a frozen treat for them to enjoy slowly. Remember, when you're out in the sun with your pet, always be safe, stay in the shade, and avoid the hottest parts of the day.

๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธWe are excited to present our new dental Veterinary Surgeon.

Georgina's journey in the veterinary field is a unique one. After graduating from The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in 2012, she returned to her childhood practice in Warwickshire, where she had the privilege of working with her long-time mentor. Her experience there included the basics of general practice and caring for animals at two local zoos.

She then transitioned to a bustling, inner-city charity practice in Birmingham, which provided her with the chance to interact with a highly diverse client base and handle a more complex surgical workload, demonstrating her versatility.

Georgina's career took a significant turn when she joined a large multidisciplinary referral hospital. Her time there was marked by the completion of two postgraduate certificates and the establishment of the dentistry service. She was also involved in designing the dental suite in the custom-built hospital, a testament to her dedication to dentistry.

From there she then moved to North Yorkshire and began a specialist training program with the European Veterinary Dental College, seeing a variety of referred cases from across the country. She loves all aspects of dental practice but particularly enjoys maxillofacial surgery and malocclusion cases.

Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her Italian Greyhounds, Goose and Pepper and exploring the beautiful countryside of Yorkshire. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ๐ŸŒณ

Exciting things are on the horizon! Next week, we will unveil our state-of-the-art dental suite and a range of comprehensive services. Keep an eye out for more information.

๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฆท Meet Jessie, a lovely 12-year-old Lhasa Apso who received dental care at our Morlery Hospital.

Under the care of our Veterinary Surgeon, Jimmy Baker, Jessie followed a treatment plan that involved antibiotics to address tartar buildup, sensitive gums, and discomfort, which was evident as she showed reluctance to have her mouth touched.

Before her dental procedure, Jessie had pre-operative blood work done to ensure she was fit for anaesthesia. During the procedure, she was monitored closely and kept comfortable with warming mats and a towel for warmth.

Jessie underwent a comprehensive dental examination, including X-rays, to assess her teeth. Fortunately, only one very loose incisor needed an extraction, which was performed during the same procedure.

Following her successful treatment, Jessie was happily reunited with her owner, who received instructions for post-operative care and went home on the same day and quickly returned to her cheerful self.

Did you know? The hot summer months create an increase in toxic blue-green algae across the UK.

This may appear as green or greenish-brown scum or foam on the water surface and contains toxins harmful to animals. It is not actually an algae but an accumulation of cyanobacteria. Dogs often swallow it by drinking water from an affected lake, river, or pond or by licking their fur after swimming. If you think blue-green algae is present, do not let your dog near it.

Unfortunately, the toxins can cause severe liver damage and can ultimately be fatal. There are currently no known preventative medicines, and prompt veterinary treatment is essential to ensure any chance of recovery.

If you are concerned, please get in touch with us immediately.

๐Ÿ˜บ Don't chip away at your cat's safety!

In a week, it will become compulsory for all cats to have a microchip. Cats must be microchipped before they turn 20 weeks old, and their owner's contact information must be accurately maintained in a designated pet microchipping registry.

Owners who fail to comply with this regulation will have 21 days to implant a microchip, or they may be subjected to a fine of up to ยฃ500.

If your cat has not yet been microchipped, book an appointment today. Microchipping increases the likelihood of being reunited with your cat if it becomes lost and provides a permanent and reliable method of pet identification.

Happy National Bee Day! ๐Ÿโค๏ธ

Let's create a buzz together by planting more flowers and supporting our local beekeepers.

Bees are essential for pollinating plants, including the fruits and vegetables we enjoy; by cultivating bee-friendly flowers in our gardens, we can offer sustenance and refuge to these vital pollinators.

Remember to be mindful of using pesticides in your garden, as they can be harmful to bees and other beneficial insects.

Do you have any bee-friendly plants in your local outdoor area or garden? We'd love to hear your favourites in the comments below.

Handsome Dash recently visited us after injuring his paw during a walk.

We performed a procedure to stitch up the wound, and with regular dressing changes, he has fully recovered and is back to his usual self.

He was exceptionally well-behaved during his dressing changes, and we were pleased to see him recover fully.
