Just reposting this as I’ve had a few applications lately where it doesn’t seem much research has been done.

Admin all up today.

Please can I ask before you fill in your application form to make sure you fully research what to feed rats first. It’s the main thing people aren’t filling in, I need full details. Unfortunately I just don’t have time to go back and fore. I do not home my rats to anyone feeding nuggets.

Are you looking for rats from a good ethical breeder NFRS breeders list is a good place to start. Make sure you question the breeder you want rats from. Not all breeders will match things you agree with. Pets4homes website is the worse place to go to. I do not know of any ethical breeder who uses that website. Every breeder homes rats differently not having a wait list doesn’t mean someone is a bad breeder, being slow to reply to messages/emails doesn’t mean someone is a bad breeder. The only review group I recommend is UK Rattery & Breeder Reviews You can look up reviews of breeders and ask for recommendations.

Rat admin all up to date. A reminder I do not have any rats available to go. I run a wait list and to be added to it you need to send an application form which needs to be accepted.

Although this is a fun post these are also common posts in rat care groups.

I bought this pet mouse from a pet shop for my daughter and they told me it was a boy. Imagine my surprise when I got home and a few hours later out popped 4 babies (from the lid of the carrier no less!)

Now I'm being told I need extra cages to be able to separate the babies when they're old enough, and I'm fairly sure the one celery leaf we were sold isn't going to feed all 5 of them. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've also been told on some Facebook groups that the cage they sold me isn't even big enough for mice- why are they even allowed to sell a cage that isn't suitable?! Next they'll be telling me the substrate they sold me isn't safe either!

I'm a bit worried that one of the babies isn't doing well, it's constantly lying down with it's eyes closed, but I don't have any money to take it to the vets- does anyone have any home remedies to help?

This is a warning post for anyone thinking about buying from Smyths Pet Shop, though I'll probably buy from them again because breeder waiting lists are way too long and I'd have to travel.

Small animals are long-term commitments, not Christmas presents! 🐹❌

Any prospective owner must ensure they are ready for the responsibility of pet ownership with proper supplies, space, time, funds for veterinary care, research of the species, and a genuine desire to care for the animal. This is often not so when it comes to surprise gifts. Please do consider alternative gifts this Christmas! 🙂

Rat care has changed a lot of the years which is a good thing. However it seems to now have gone from recommended to banned. This is not a good way to approach others. Its not possible to ban people homing out single rats. It be impossible to police. If you seen someone with a solo rat you can recommend they get friends and explain the reasons why buy you can’t force them. Sizes of cages are recommended with number of rats in. It’s important to take that recommendation and judge your own rats. For example my bucks do better in smaller groups but my does love a big group in a double cage. It also depends how a cage is set up. It’s recommended to have minimum 12 inch wheel. This does not have to be a tic tac wheel. You can’t force others to only buy certain things. Rat care is different in different countries as well. Different food is available in different countries some better some worse. In Germany having a wheel for a rat is seen as a big no and if you do you a bad rat owner. It’s important not to give misinformation. Research yourself don’t say something is banned or should not be used. Recommend something else say the reasons why. Don’t just repeat what others say. If someone says a breeder is bad don’t just believe them. Find out why, ask for proof and ask the breeder questions. I’m happy to answer questions about my breeding. Just because a breeder doesn’t line up with what you agree with doesn’t mean they a bad breeder. There loads of breeders out there who all do things differently. The main thing I say with breeders is if they not willing to talk about things or talk about foundation rats then those are the ones to worry about.
