I have worked with dogs since leaving school 27 years ago and have always aspired to promote canine welfare and had a keen interest in dog training. After leaving school I attended Kirkley Hall College to complete an NVQ 3 in Animal care whilst working in kennels. After leaving kennels I started working for a large pet store and ended up managing several stores and working as an adviser in pet car

e for the company. During this time I completed numerous nutritional courses in partnership with premium feed manufactures & obtained a City & Guilds qualification in Pet store management and Animal care. My previous dogs, Benny and particularly Maverick (retired/failed police dogs) found me seeking a more in depth understanding of dog behaviour and this lead me on my journey over 20 years ago. My passion for nutrition was started and the relationship between diet behaviour still remains a core part of my training programmes. I am a gold level instructor with the Academy of dog training & behaviourists and full member of the Guild of dog trainers. Professional development is very important to me and I am studying Advanced Canine Psychology at the Animal Care College and continuing courses with the world renowned School of Canine Science. I am a registered microchip implanter, qualified Pet First Aider and a registered C-SQP, meaning I am able to advise and dispense certain veterinary products. I specialise in aggressive dogs and behavioural problems associated with these aspects. My passion for nutrition interlinks with my holistic approach to dog behaviour, looking at all aspects of the dogs health, well-being & environment. I love spending time with my boys Oki & Denver who are Saarloos Wolfdogs & my now retired horse Tova. I also own and operate Central Bark Dog day-care which is where i run my classes and training workshops. Central Bark has been providing first class day care services for over 9 years and is set in acres of beautiful countryside just outside of Morpeth. Secure in and outdoor facilities are available and all of our staff are first aid trained, qualified, experienced, fully licensed i and insured.

Just the 1 Activity class today and I must say I was glad. We didn’t get wet we were drenched so well done to everyone for getting on with it!
The forecast says it wouldn’t rain until this afternoon but that changes quite quickly. ☔️ we are back to the months where I optimistically set up outside but also have a practical plan B inside 😜

By 11am we were boiling 🥵

The Juniors are all the same, much as if expect for their age. Pulling in the lead or lunging, recall is effective only with no distraction, desperate to meet every dog and selective hearing!!!

Pretty standard for this age group and they are all big dogs do we have a lot of work to do.

By the end of the first session we had them all settled around each other, walking on loose leads most of the time and in a much better place to start listening and learning.
Can’t wait for next week.

Still pretty grey for the Puppy plus gang but they are all really switched on and straight into playtime with owners. We are still working with a short attention span at this age so we keep the playtime short and effective.

So proud of this girl today. She’s is very anxious and reactive and being near or even in sight of another dog has always been an issue. We have been working hard on relaxing her and have found that giving her a job is the best way to do that. She has been practising some agility and obstacle exercises as well as basic obedience drills. This paid off today as she worked around another dog with hardly any reaction and really good focus on her owner ⭐️

A weekend well spent. I had the weekend off ahead of starting new classes next week.
We walked lots, played lots and caught up with friends and family.
Taking a break from training or day to day routine can have a big impact. Just being and enjoying and relaxing together is such a lost skill for many dog owners. Doing nothing is an art 🖼️
Bronn’s mood mirrors mine tonight… 💤 We are ready to get back at it tomorrow… after a good nights sleep.

A busy morning of social walks and some brain training agility exercises for Rod. Then this afternoon me and the apprentice headed off for a walk with Dolly.
If you’ve done any training with me you’ll have heard me say over and over that you should never set your dog up to fail. Arriving at Bolam lake today and seeing how busy it was this is exactly the situation she would fail in. So we had a rethink and headed off to a quieter park. A much better option as we still saw lots of dogs but had more space and she didn’t react to a single dog 💪 While we were there Bronn had to show her his favourite swimmy spot too.

A busy morning of lessons on the go today. First stop was Northumberlandia to work with an excitable little lad who barks and loses focus when he sees another dog. It’s a popular walking spot so always a good place to go to work around other dogs and practice things we have proofed in previous lessons then off to Morpeth for a lesson with Zac on on his normal walking route the back to CB this afternoon . Working at our facility in a controlled environment is the best place to start working on any behaviour modification but once the dog progresses I like to move out to different locations so we can practice in various situations to make sure the dog can cope in any situation.

FIREWORKS 🧨

Back in May I posted about getting ready for fireworks (see below post) It’s at that time of year that I ask everyone to get their dogs ready for Fireworks. 🎇
Starting early gives you plenty of time to desensitise the dog to the noise. Counter conditioning to teach your dog that fireworks are fun is a much better strategy than drugging them up and hiding them away. By providing their favourite type of enrichment while the bangs are happening makes fireworks a positive experience and reduces everyone’s stress. Just this week I read about a dog who was spooked on a walk by fireworks and bolted with a tragic outcome, it’s August so the owner would not have been expecting to hear them.

This is your sign to take action NOW!

If your dog was okay with fireworks last year or you’ve just welcomed a new dog or puppy into the home since last year it’s important to start with the training now. Start the process below to make sure you have another fear free year.

For those of you whose dogs react to crow scarers the same applies to you. Before you know it they will be back in your life and you need to start with desensitising now.
🎆 🐕 🎇 🐶

I’ve not gone mad and I know it’s only May!
Every year people contact me in October to ask for help with fireworks. At that late stage all we can do is offer herbal calmers and advice. However now, 6 months ahead, I can give you lots of practical advice to get prepared and beat the firework stress.
Sound aversion training your dog to accept the noise of fireworks can eliminate or dramatically reduce their fear of fireworks (or other noises such as traffic/thunderstorms).

The dogs trust have free downloads to help desensitise your dogs. All you need to do is set up the following routine and follow it daily.

💥 Have a safe space set up, this can be their crate/bed.

💥 Get their favourite chews out or a toy they love to play with.

💥 Start playing the noise on very low volume, we’ve got 6 months so no rush to increase it.

💥 Give the dog a chew/kong etc or their food while listening to the sounds. If they prefer toys start a game of tug, fetch or find it.

💥 Start with short sessions and keep it fun.

💥 If your dog isn’t bothered by the sound then you can begin to increase the volume slowly. If they are still anxious go back to a lower volume and spend longer at that level.

💥 In a few months you should be able to play the sounds at a high volume and more randomly without your dog reacting.

Some dogs with severe fear may still need some calming products to help them cope and I would always recommend keeping a safe space for them even if they seem okay

The gorgeous Dolly on a training walk at the beach today. She did amazing ignoring so many dogs and even being able to look at them then focus back on her owners.
As always she had her emotional support Bronn with her to help. Bronn’s role is to remain calm and block other dogs from approaching her. If we get an over friendly dog Bronn will step in to greet them while we make sure Dolly stays unnerved by them. I’m happy to report today that every owner we passed kept their dogs under control or put them back on the lead and was much appreciated and made such a difference to our walk 👏

The puppy’s were on top form in class yesterday with lots of off lead work. The puppy class excelled themselves also. This group is a mix of quite anxious and over excitable dogs… a bit of a bad combo. However we had them all walking in a group yesterday, close to each other and calm 🎉
The Juniors worked on ‘minding their own business’, ignoring each other and learning to do nothing.

Today started with the beginners activity group and we had a go at scent work today with lots of success.

The rest of the activity classes worked inside as it was way to hot 🥵

With the summer holidays everywhere is busy and people are walking in areas that their dogs aren’t familiar with.

Please take some time to make
Sure your dog has a valid and up to date ID tag on, put on the collar AND harness if you use both.

Make sure your microchip details are up to date, so many dogs are left waiting in kennels because phone numbers or address haven’t been updated .

Most dogs go missing from a garden or on a walk with an owner so make sure you have a mobile phone number on your tag as that is the fastest way to reunite them.

If you are going away take a tag with your holiday home address on and look up the numbers for local rescues, vets and dog wardens incase something should happen.

Having an info sheet with your dogs details on can be a life saver in an emergency.

Make an info sheet up (see dog lost) with your dogs details and description, a recent photo (if clipped use before and after as they can vary a lot). Phone numbers, vets details, any markings etc. if your dog goes missing you will be stressed and being prepared will enable you to share your details easily.
