Johne's disease, also known as Paratuberculosis, is a chronic, contagious bacterial disease of the intestinal tract that affects all cattle but is most commonly seen in dairy cattle.

Caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium avium subsp, it causes s slowly progressive wasting of the animal and increasingly severe diarrhoea. The organism is resistant to heat, cold, and drying. It can survive for longer than a year in soil and even longer in water.

Here's some practical measures for controlling Johhne's Disease in your herd.

Sheep Scab is a highly contagious disease caused by the Psoroptes ovis mite. It is spread by sheep-to-sheep contact, at markets or in livestock lorries. Keep an eye out for sheep that are trying to scratch themselves on fences and posts. Look out for yellowish, crusty lesions and make sure you quarantine new animals.

If your flock becomes infested, it will have an impact on their welfare, as well as your pocket.

Give us a call if you suspect your flock may have sheep scab. We can arrange the correct treatment and advise you on what to do next.

The 4 key steps to biosecurity on your farm are really simple!

● Make sure all the animals you buy in are from known sources or have had the relevant tests
● Quarantine all animals that are new to the farm. Keep them away from your existing stock for at least 30 days
● Control who and what comes onto farm. That includes people, vehicles and animals
● Disinfect, disinfect, disinfect! Everything that comes into contact with your animals - people, materials and equipment

We all want happy, healthy cows in our herds, just like this lady. But, Grass Staggers (also known as hypomagnesaemia or milk fever) is quick and can be fatal. It's a true veterinary emergency.

Keep an eye out for these signs:

● Excitability
● High head carriage
● Muscle twitching
● Staggering gait
● Sensitivity to noise and touch
● Grinding of teeth
● Exaggerated blink reflex

These progress rapidly to seizures, recumbency, padding and death. So it's imperative that if you notice any of these, you call us straight away!

Lambing 🐑

Why do sheep eat their afterbirth (placenta)?

After a lamb has been born a mother's instincts kick in and they will clean their lambs but also eat their afterbirth. This allows the sheep to hide any evidence of a lamb being born to avoid any predators. Another good thing is that the afterbirth is full of nutrition that is good for the sheep as this helped develop the lamb before birth.

Lambing isn't always easy and yesterday just proved that 😅

Andrew was called out to an emergency c-section on a ewe that was struggling to push her lambs. When Andrew got there the ewe's womb had pr*****ed and her lambs dropped down next to her udders. Andrew acted quickly starting the c-section and getting the ewe's lambs safely out.

Unfortunately the ewe didn't survive but amazingly all three of her lambs are healthy and thriving 🙌 🐑

Well done Andrew! 👏
