***PLEASE SHARE***
Unfortunately, we have been handed in a cat which was involved in an RTA on Coltness Road, Wishaw. He was found just outside the car wash on Sunday 19th May. The cat is a large tabby coloured, entire male. Unfortunately, he is not chipped. He looks to be well looked after, so we are keen to reunite him with his family as soon as possible.

Please call the surgery on 01698 861180 or alternatively you can contact us via email .

Thank you

This is an important announcement for all XL Bully owners in Scotland!

As the new requirements are coming into play, we understand that it can be a worrying time for those who own an XL Bully. It is important to ensure you are protecting your beloved pet and to make sure you are following all legislation requirements!

Please ensure that you know XL bullies are not a breed in their own rights. They are in fact, made up of several different breeds. This means that if your dog fits the criteria, they are at risk of being seized and ultimately destroyed without an exemption certificate or proof of pedigree. Please don’t get caught out!

Neutering is an important aspect of obtaining an exemption certificate. This requires completion of “confirmation of neutering” form. When you should do this depends entirely on what age your dog will be on 31st July 2024. If your dog is 18 months or older, they must receive the form by 31 January 2025. If your dog is younger than 18 months, they must receive the form by 31 January 2025 or within one month of the dog turning 18 months, whichever is later. You can find the required form here at: - https://www.gov.scot/publications/xl-bully-dog-rules/documents/

You can apply for an Exemption Certificate to legally continue owning your pet. This certificate must be obtained before 31st July 2024. After this deadline it will be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully and you will be putting your pet at danger ☹
To obtain the exemption certificate you must apply online or by post. Postal applications must be submitted by the 15th of July whilst online applications can be submitted up until 31st of July. Please visit the government website for further instructions and requirements: https://www.mygov.scot/xl-bully-dogs-scotland/how-to-apply-for-an-exemption

Additionally, you must ensure that your pet is kept on a lead in public spaces and muzzled at all times, even when in a motor vehicle. This is to ensure that you are adhering to legislation to keep your dog as safe as possible.

For owners considering alternative options please follow this link: https://www.gov.scot/publications/xl-bully-dog-rules/documents/

***UPDATE***
We are happy to report that it looks like this little soul will be reunited with her family. Thank you to everyone for the help as always. Your shares have helped massively with reuniting "Gracie" with her family! :)

***Please help us reunite this beautiful little soul**

This gorgeous girl was unfortunately found by a member of the public wandering along the back roads between Cleland and Newarthill. We have scanned her but unfortunately she does not appear to be microchipped. She looks to be a fairly young cat, who appears to be in good health overall. We suspect she is someones pet who unfortunately has wandered too far from home perhaps. She is currently safe and in a temporary foster home under the charity Cat Concern until she is reunited with her family. Please share as much as possible as this will increase her chances of being reunited with her family.

Thank you.

***Missing Pet***

Good afternoon

We are looking for some assistance to help find a little cat who has sadly gone missing from the Mossend area in Bellshill.

Pepper is a female, tortoiseshell domestic shorthair who has sadly not returned home. She is a very friendly little soul. She was last seen on Saturday 24th February in the Milnwood Drive area of Mossend and has not been seen since which is highly unusual. Her owners believe that she may be injured and could be taking refuge somewhere. We are appealing for everyone around the area to please check any outbuildings such as garages, garden sheds and greenhouses. Peppers owners are understandably worried and any help with reuniting her is very much appreciated.

Please contact the surgery if you have any information either by telephone on 01698 861180 or by messenger.

Thank you!

***UPDATE***

Pepper has been found, thank you to everyone for sharing!

Hello everyone

We are looking for some assistance to help find a little cat who has sadly gone missing from the Holytown area.

Casper is a 2 1/2 year old male, castrated domestic shorthair. He is microchipped, although the details are not up to date. He was last seen leaving his home in Holytown on Saturday 27th January and unfortunately has not been seen since which is highly unusual for him. He is a very shy and nervous wee soul so it unlikely he has went with any strangers. Please could everyone check any outbuildings, greenhouses and sheds in case he has wandered into these and accidentally been locked in. As you can see he has quite distinctive markings, so should be easy to identify. His owner is understandably worried, so any help would be much appreciated to reunite him.

Please contact the surgery if you have any information either by telephone on 01698 861180 or by messenger.

Thank you!

***UPDATE***
Milo has returned home safely! Thank you to everyone for sharing the post.

***Missing Pet***

Milo has went missing from the Carfin Road area of Newarthill. Milo is a male neutered Bengal. This is very unusual for Milo not to return home, so as you can imagine his family are very worried. He was last seen leaving his home on Carfin Road on Thursday 14th December 2023. He is microchipped with up to date details. We are asking anyone with information to come forward. Please check garages, green houses, sheds and any other out buildings for any sign of him.
Please contact the surgery with any information on 01698 861180. Thank you!

Another very usual guide to animals and what the festive period means to them : )

❄️Keep Calm It's Christmas❄️

💙Christmas may seem like a time for cheer
💙But for our pets there may be an element of fear....

We wanted to raise awareness this Christmas to help pets and families have a safe and enjoyable festive period.

Although some pets enjoy being in the centre of the action, many will find parties and groups overwhelming so here are our Christmas Top Tips ☃️

❄️Children

Some pets get on fabulously with children, but many will not be used to the loud noises and excessive attention.

Children make up a large percentage of dog bite statistics. We need to be aware that many pets often feel they have no option to lash out after they have been telling us (via subtle body language) that they are feeling uncomfortable in a situation.

Therefore we need to teach children entering the house during the Christmas period to be animal savvy!

🌀Do not approach a sleeping animal.
🌀Ask permission before you pet an animal.
🌀Don't disturb a pet while eating.
🌀Don't take toys away from a pet.
🌀Don't jump on or ride dogs.
🌀If cats are in a safe hiding place then leave them be.

Canine Arthritis Management have produced a good book for children particularly focusing on our dogs with arthritis:

https://www.camonlineshop.com/why-dont-you-listen-book/

❄️Safe spaces

Safe places for our pets to escape the commotion are imperative to allow them to relax.

Provide cats with safe escape routes and calm, quiet rooms to hide in away from the commotion.

Provide dogs with a safe, comfy area they can retreat to if the party gets too much. This should be an area they are not allowed to be disturbed in and can be a room, crate or quiet corner.

❄️Fireworks

Follow our firework safety advise to keep pets safe and calm if fireworks are set off at Christmas.

❄️Vet visits

If your pet needs a prescription please give your Veterinary practice plenty of notice to dispense as there may be changes in Christmas medicine deliveries.

❄️Small furries

Indoor small furries like rabbits, Guinea pigs and hamsters will often find the noise and busyness extremely stressful. Keep them away from excessive handling by children and allow them a quiet place to stick to their routine.

❄️ Reptiles/exotics/birds

Reptiles also won't appreciate any over handling. Many species also run the risk of zoonotic bacteria (particularly salmonella) from their gastrointestinal tract if children or other guests are handling and nibbling finger food!

Some birds may enjoy the attention but others will find it overwhelming, and should not be handled in a party environment. They should not be around teflon pans cooking, certain sprays, cigarette smoke and room fragrances so may need to be kept away.

Christmas is in full swing now we are into December. Although it brings times of joy for lots of us, it also brings hazards, especially to our feline companions! The Cats Protection League have produced a very handy guideline for over the festive period to help keep our cats safe. Please see below for the link.

The festive season can be an exciting time for cats with smells, sights and sounds to grab their attention. Read about keeping your cat safe in our guide.

New changes are coming soon and they will take time to negotiate. Please bear with us as they are implemented.

New changes are coming soon and they will take time to negotiate. Please bear with us as they are implemented.

On September 1st we are seeing new prescription recommendations from the RCVS - Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons come into action!

We are asking for our loyal clients' patience and understanding while veterinary practices across the country try to change their protocols to reflect the new requirements from the RCVS.

In many cases protocols will be very similar and might not impact you at all, but you may notice some slight changes to your practices protocol in prescriptions and we ask that you remain understanding while this is implemented.

One of the biggest factors that may impact you as a client is that anti-parasitics (flea, worm and tick treatment) are going to be in the same band as antimicrobials and important drugs meaning that there needs to be a physical assessment and a physical examination before the *new* prescription of an anti-parasitic. This could result in slightly more regular, in practice, checks than you are currently used to. NB 'new prescription' refers to a different drug, different dose, different frequency than your pet is currently on, or when your current prescription comes to an end.

The RCVS have said that:

"We realise that there are differences in opinion within the profession regarding the inclusion of antiparasitics in this part of the guidance.

There are a range of factors set out in the guidance to be taken into consideration when prescribing POM-Vs, and we understand that the opinion of some is that these can simply be applied to antibiotics and antiparasitics to ensure responsible prescribing.

However, it is our view that these medicines should be treated differently to other POM-Vs because the risk of uncontrolled use is greater, for example, resistance and environmental impact.

As such, the change requires a physical examination in order to positively impact prescribing behaviours and change attitudes to these medicines."

Today is World Stray Animals day! 🐶🐱🐰🐴It is a time to show compassion and care for homeless animals over the globe!
There are a lot of stray animals around the world, infact, approximately 600,000,000! 🤯

So what can we do to help?!

Microchipping - Microchipping your pet gives them the best chance of being identified and returned to you if they get lost or stolen. It is only effective if you keep your details up-to-date though! On the 6th April 2016, it became compulsory for all dogs aged over 8 weeks in Scotland to be microchipped. However, this has not been made compulsory for cats in Scotland although we highly recommend microchipping your cat where possible. 💉

Neutering - Neutering initiatives are important within stray populations of dogs and cats as this slows population growth. Unfortunately, homeless animals are often euthanised, neglected or die from disease.

Adopt, dont shop! Currently animal shelters worlwide are struggling with the increasing number of companion animals who need rehoming. We urge you to consider adopting from a reputable rehoming centre.

Support your local rescue centres - Outwith rehoming from rescue centres, you can support them in various other ways. Volunteering is an important method of support and many rehoming centres and charities depend on the voluntary work of individuals to keep functioning. Fundraising is another way to support local rehoming centres and charities. Any funding, whether it be financial or gifts in the form of food, bedding, cleaning items and help towards veterinary fees are all extremely appreciated. Every year here at Brannock we donate to several local charities with the help of our wonderful clients and we endeavour to keep this going for as long as possible!

Comment below with a photo of your furry friend, we would love to hear your rehoming stories! ❤️💙💜💛💚

FEELING FRUITY !! 21st DECEMBER

Christmas time treats frequently have dried fruit in them - mince pies, dumpling, Christmas cake, stollen. As this is usually combined with tasty pastry or sponge it has huge appeal to our pets. Unfortunately grapes and their dried forms - raisins and sultanas are toxic to dogs and need to be avoided at all costs. Unfortunately they affect the kidneys and can have serious consequences. The effect can be variable from pet to pet and it’s impossible to know which patients will be worst affected. Our advice would be that you contact us ASAP if you discover your pet has ingested this type of food. It may well be that we need to induce vomiting to minimise the exposure to the toxin and then use medication to slow absorption. Our best advice is avoidance at all costs so place this tasty treat well out of reach !!

SALT LAMPS 20th of DECEMBER

Salt lamps have become popular in recent years but it’s important to be aware that they do pose a risk to our pets . The issue is the ingestion of the salt from the lamp . The risk exists for both dogs and cats but in reality they are usually out of reach of dogs but very accessible to cats ! The excess salt will cause salt toxicity which can give signs such as vomiting and diarrhoea, lethargy but also more serious signs such as seizures, blindness , unable to walk as the toxin affects the brain and nerves of the body. Please phone for advice if your pet is guilty of paying attention to the lamp and move it well out of reach !! Better safe than sorry : )
