PRE / POST CLIP INFO
The condition of your horse or pony on arrival for clipping is extremely important if you want a smooth, seamless and line free finish. If it is warm, absolutely give them a good scrub over with some kind of grease removing shampoo and a curry comb - your arms should hurt after this bath!
However, I appreciate around this time of year in Scotland it may not be possible to wash… so here’s a few more options to get you a better finish :
⭐️A bloomin’ good groom - I’m talking a good couple hours of curry combing and brushing to lift all that dirt from the skin. Many people just make the outside coat look nice… but that’s not what the clippers go through, you really need to get deep into their coat when grooming.
⭐️Using a wash rather than shampoo - I swear by Pro-Equine Cool Wash (if it’s warm) or you can use warm water with something like Barrier’s lavender or citrus Washes - the joy of these products is that you don’t need to wash them out! Meaning you can get rid of sweat, grease whilst only sponging on a small amount of water which leaves their coat clean and conditioned. This technique can be used before AND after a clip!
⭐️Leg Clips and Washing Out - if you’re wanting feathers / legs clipped out, it is important that their legs are mud free, dry and ideally brushed out before taking clippers to them. Any kind of shampoo will do the trick here - but if they are itchy, using a neem oil or anti-itch shampoo will make them more comfortable.

Now that your horse is clipped, the aftercare is just as important! A good brush to get all the loose hair off will help them feel less itchy. But if you want to add that condition back into their coat or get that show ring shine - hot clothing or using some kind of wash (cool wash, lavender wash etc) that doesn’t need rinsed off, will help their new coat thrive!
Hope that helps - And I hope to see some very clean ponies from now on 😉
