A big thank you to the Vets Now staff who will be looking after all our pets over the Christmas period to allow our clinical teams to be with their families.
💊ANTIBIOTIC AMNESTY💊
The NHS in the Midlands are running an Antibiotic Amnesty to try and get patients to return unused antibiotics for safe disposal.
Many people flush these down the loo or put into general rubbish so end up in landfill. This is exposing the environmental bacteria to low levels of antibiotics and spreading resistance.

Buddy has been partying away at our Christmas Party last night 🎉 He even took over the DJ booth to play all of his favourite songs 🎶🎉💃🎄
Tried to run some bloods with some of our new lab machines yet they were occupied by a certain team member. Think buddy might be having too much fun here! 🤣 #festivefun
Just a quick update on Hoover. He has had his 3rd Librela injection and we have been able to take him off metacam. As you can see he is still very much enjoying life for a 14 & 1/2 year old dog. Keeping up with the youngster.

** Star Patient Alfie **
As a student veterinary nurse, I see different emergency cases on a day to day basis. When it’s your own pet however, it puts everything into perspective. One of the worst situations I could imagine happened when I was at work. My own dog Alfie, a greyhound, had twisted and fallen over on a walk and appeared paralysed.
When I went to the car to see him, I fell apart. Not only could he not get up, he couldn’t move his back legs at all. He was quickly carried into the practice and stabilised, intravenous fluids were administered to help combat shock.
After being assessed by the veterinary surgeon, we discovered that Alfie still had some sensation in his back feet. This was a positive sign but still a worry for his future if he couldn’t stand. He had spinal x-rays taken which showed no obvious spinal damage, however he was in a lot of pain and unable to stand on his back legs. He remained at Leonard Brothers for a further 24 hours for us to administer strong pain medication and to be monitored for any improvement.
Sadly there was no improvement seen during this time; Alfie was still not able to get up so, as his owner, I made the decision alongside the vet to refer him to the Liverpool Small Animal Teaching Hospital for an MRI.
The MRI concluded he had compressed a disc in his spine which had suffered significant damage. This meant that due to the injury he had sustained it could take weeks to heal, or it could be that he may not recover at all.
The vet explained the healing process of his injury and that it would mainly consist of nursing care at home and intense physio to encourage Alfie to use his back legs again. Due to his loving nature and strong will power, the vet felt he had a good chance of recovering.
After processing the information the vet had told us that day, we decided the best thing for Alfie would be to stay at Liverpool for a week so he had 24 hour care and a calm environment until we were able to get the house equi
Do you remember Lilly?
Lilly was brought into our Wistaston branch last summer after being shot by an air gun pellet that became lodged near her spine.
The unfortunate result of this injury was that Lilly’s back legs became paralysed.
Lilly received intensive physiotherapy both at the practice and at home by her owners.
Lilly did amazingly and was back walking within a month or so.
She has unfortunately been left with some urinary incontinence and has struggled to maintain muscle on her back legs.
After visiting Heather our physiotherapist it was suggested that Lilly could try hydrotherapy to see if her muscle on her back legs could be improved to help her mobility and quality of life.
A discussion was had between Heather and Lorna at Well-dogs Canine Hydrotherapy Pool and it was decided to trial Lilly to see if she would cope with this form of exercise, as we all know cats aren’t a big fan of water.
After the initial shock of the water Lilly hasn’t looked back and continues to go swimming on a weekly basis.
The strength that Lilly has achieved in both her spinal muscles and her back legs because of the hydrotherapy has made such a difference to her life including reducing her urinary incontinence.
Obviously hydrotherapy isn’t for every patient but can be a great form of rehabilitation and exercise for many different animals.
Hydrotherapy teamed with physiotherapy can really help to make a difference to an animals mobility.
If you would like to discuss how physiotherapy or hydrotherapy could benefit your pet please don’t hesitate to call and speak to Heather.
As well as offering physiotherapy for the dogs that are under the care of Leonard Brothers, we also offer physiotherapy for those pets under the care of other practices. This only requires a simple referral from your vet.
Heather is our qualified veterinary physiotherapist. Heather has been a registered veterinary nurse since 2010 and completed her post graduate diploma in veterinary physiotherapy after tw

***UPDATE*** for those of you following lovely little Lilly's progress following her air gun pellet spinal injury, we are very pleased to say she is coming on leaps and bounds!
Lilly came to stay at the Wistaston branch of Leonard Brothers for two weeks while her owners were away in Denmark. During this time it was top priority of all staff to get Lilly out and about in the clinic, undertaking rigorous physiotherapy and hydrotherapy: which she actually took to surprisingly well!
This is a video of her on the last day of her stay with us. Taking her very first unsupported steps! Her owners have been keeping Emmie updated with all her progress and from the sounds of it she's up to all sorts of mischief!
Lilly is now spending time outside in the garden, climbing onto the sofas and walking (for short periods) unaided! She's even tried to make a break out the cat flap 🙀
Will bring you another update in the not too distant future and hope that the good news continues 💕
