We had an unusual case presentation, that actually fell on Halloween, of a complete tail amputation, suspected to have happened after the tail became stuck in branches followed by the horse pulling away and unfortunately parting company with their tail.

On examination, the horse was very bright, with normal vital parameters. She was keen to eat and had passed a dropping since amputation. The mare was sedated for examination of the area which revealed complete amputation of the tail at the level where the sacral spinal vertebrae meets the vertebrae of the tail (coccygeal). After gentle cleaning, the back side of one of the coccygeal vertebrae could be visualised. The mareโ€™s anal tone was checked and was within normal limits, which indicated that nerve damage had not occurred during the amputation which can sometimes occur.

The mare was started on pain relief and antibiotics for a week after the injury and the owners did a brilliant job of cleaning the area twice a day with clean tap water.

The injury has healed remarkably well and there is now a small amount of hair covering the area.

Weโ€™ve had a few cases of sand impactions in the last few weeks. It is more commonly seen in summer when horses are kept on sandy bare pastures. Laminitis prone animals are especially susceptible as they are kept on poorer pastures.
Risk factors include insufficient roughage in the diet and the sand and mineral composition of the soil.

Clinical signs include colic, diarrhoea, weight loss and poor performance.
Colon displacements may occur as a consequence of the sand impaction leading to more aggressive colic symptoms, reduced droppings and decreased intestinal sounds. Sand sounds may be heard on the ventral (bottom) of the abdomen. It is difficult to differentiate between sand colic and other impactions.

Horses usually improve with pain relief and signs can last weeks.
Sand in the faeces may be observes by adding water to six fecal balls in a bag or rectal glove and allowing the sand to settle to the bottom. While some sand will always be present if more than 1 teaspoon is present it is considered excessive.

These colics are most often treated medically but surgical intervention may be necessary if pain is uncontrollable or medical treatment becomes prolonged. These types of impactions more frequently require surgery compared to feed impactions. Medical treatment includes removing the horse from access to sand, rehydrating and using laxatives. While itโ€™s not known how effective it is, Psyllium hull can used in the treatment at much higher doses given through a stomach tube and in the prevention of sand impaction when added to the diet. (Once to twice daily for two to three weeks, then one week off) . Other prevention methods include adequate roughage, not feeding from the ground and providing extra when pastures are insufficient along with adequate exercise.

Corneal ulcers develop on the surface of the eye (called the cornea). As there is no blood vessels in the cornea healing can be slow. Unless promptly diagnosed and treated this condition can affect the horseโ€™s vision and even lead to the eye needing to be removed.

Corneal ulcers can be caused by trauma to the eye, foreign bodies or infection with bacteria viruses or fungi

Clinical signs include pain with squinting or excessive tears and swelling of the eye. The cornea may be cloudy and discharge may be seen on the face.

Staining the eye with fluorescein stain dyes the ulcer green (as seen in the photos) as it attaches to the cells under the cornea allowing the ulcer to be diagnosed and the size monitored. As a consequence of the corneal ulcer, uveitis can develop which will also need to be treated.

Frequent topical administration of broad spectrum antibiotics drops or ointments need to be inserted. Analgesia/ pain relief is given to ease pain and inflammation. EDTA or serum taken from the horses blood can prevent collagenolysis (the break down of the collagen structure of the cornea)
Depending on the behaviour of the horse a subpalpebral lavage system may need to be inserted. This is when a sterile tube system is inserted into the eyelid surgically to allow frequent treatments without handling the painful eye.

Frequent reviews by the vet is necessary to monitor the progress of the ulcer.

If your horse is squinting, has any discharge or swelling do not hesitate to call your vet to examine the eye.
