Leptospirosis – Update on vaccines

At Malthouse Vets, we strive to provide you with the best preventative healthcare for your pets. Vaccination is at the heart of preventative healthcare and not only provides your pet with protection against life-threatening diseases but also ensures that your pet receives an annual health check with a Veterinary Surgeon.
As you may or may not be aware, vaccination schedules are changing for dogs to provide the best protection against Leptospirosis, one on the diseases we routinely vaccinate against. Please read on or speak to a member of staff who will be pleased to help you.

What is Leptospirosis (“Lepto”)?

Leptospirosis is a potentially fatal disease caused by a type of bacterium which likes to live in wet environments and spread via mammals, such as rats. It often causes sickness in animals that is not immediately obvious as Lepto, but which makes them poorly with symptoms such as vomiting. However, it also causes severe and life-threatening disease often including liver and kidney failure. Once diagnosed, it is often very expensive to treat with no guarantees of survival. It is also zoonotic meaning that it can be spread to humans.

Why do the vaccines need to change?

The suppliers have discontinued manufacturing of Lepto 2 and only Lepto 4 is available.

Why has Canigen® Lepto 2 been discontinued?

Updated WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) Vaccination Guidelines have been published, which now have a clear recommendation for the use of quadrivalent leptospirosis ( L4) vaccines in countries where the sero-epidemiological data for the serogroups is known, which is the case for the UK: “In countries or regions where canine leptospirosis is endemic, implicated serogroups are known, and where suitable vaccines are available for use, vaccination of all dogs against leptospirosis is highly recommended and these vaccines should be considered core in those places.”

How do I upgrade my vaccines and what does it cost?

In order to upgrade to the new Lepto 4 vaccine, your dog needs to be given two vaccinations 4 weeks apart. This can be achieved by having a second vaccination 4 weeks after the normal annual booster.

This second vaccine will be free of charge providing your dog is over 15months of age and fully up to date with vaccine protocol prior to this change.

What if my dog’s vaccinations are out of date?

It is easy and straight forward to re-start your dog’s vaccinations. Please book in for 2 appointments, 4 weeks apart, our receptionists will be happy to advise you.

Is there a difference in adverse events between Lepto 2 and Lepto 4 vaccines?

There are a number of vaccines authorised in the UK, containing either two (L2) or four (L4) strains of Leptospira. Based on the most recent periodic safety update report data received for each product, the incidence of adverse animal events for all L2 vaccine products combined is 0.016%; for L4 vaccine products, this figure is 0.045%.

In other words, the Veterinary Medicines Directorate has received fewer than 2 adverse events for L2, and fewer than 5 for L4, for every 10,000 doses sold.

The overall incidence of suspected adverse events for both L2 and L4 vaccine products is therefore considered to be rare.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us and we'd be happy to help.

Happy New Year to all our amazing clients. Thank you so much for your continued support and appreciation of all our hard work.
2024 was a wonderful year for Malthouse Vets as we saw Casey complete her veterinary nursing studies and qualify as a registered veterinary nurse and Katarina pass all her exams to now be a certificate holder in Small Animal Surgery. We celebrated our first Malthouse wedding as Kim tied the knot and she actually allowed us rabble to join her at their beautiful wedding.
We said very sad goodbyes to Joe, Lizzie and Lily but wish them well in their new and exciting career changes and thankfully they still pop in to see us regularly.
And we welcomed Tegan as an animal care assistant and Sarah as a receptionist, both fantastic additions to a truly awesome and dedicated team of staff.

Our final hero for this Christmas is Lemi.
Lemi is a little dog with a big character. In his 7 years of life , we have seen him rather frequently. 5 years ago he started having gastrointestinal issues and very high red blood cell count which responded to removing larger volumes of blood on a regular basis. Little Lemi was coming to us for a regular bleed. Once he had improved, he came back with gallbladder issues, which resulted in Lemi requiring a surgery to have his gallbladder removed. Poor Lemi did not only lose his gallbladder, but also his spleen, which looked very abnormal. Histopathology later confirmed a low grade lymphoma. which is a cancer of the lymphatic system. Luckily for Lemi, his lymphoma was isolated to the spleen only, and was cured by the removal of the spleen. Once everything was going well and Lemi was fully recovered from his surgeries, he developed a multiresistant urine infection and started forming crystals in his urine. Lemi is under ongoing treatment but still going strong, despite all the struggles life has put in front of him.

Our next Christmas Tree Hero is Benson.
Benson joined our practice as a patient in October ‘22. This lovely older friendly dog had previously been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, osteoarthritis and chronic dry eye. He had chronic skin issues also. His dedicated owners were managing him well with his multiple conditions. We then diagnosed him with hypothyroidism which we were able to treat with thyroxine. This greatly improved his eye and skin conditions needing far less medication and a much happier dog.
He was stable and happy and enjoying life. His owners always doing an excellent job of maintaining his good quality of life. Unfortunately he deteriorated dramatically this October and bladder stones and splenic masses were found via ultrasound. It was agreed that surgery would be too much for this old boy who was nearly 16, and we sadly said goodbye. He is greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing this gentle soul.

Clover
Clover was a beautiful Cavalier x Bischon that we diagnosed with mitral valve heart disease in October 2019. This delightful and happy little dog lived a full and happy life managed well on her heart medication until March of this year when she started to have congestive heart failure. She rallied on increased doses and additional mediation and continued to enjoy a full life of walks on the beach and fun with her owner and companion. Unfortunately poor Clover succumbed to her heart failure in October this year and we said a very sad goodbye.

Its that time of year again where we salute a few extra special patients out of a host of amazing animals who we have treated over the year. We offer a little recognition to their dedicated and caring owners and to these brave pets. The first of our Christmas Tree Heroes is Cho-Cho
Where to begin? To start writing about this quite incredible and absolutely adored cat.
Cho-Cho is a Siamese cat who has been through so much in his lifetime. In the last 3 years Cho has been shot by an air rifle pellet (shooter and situation unknown whilst out one day) which led to severe stress causing cystitis and the subsequent inflammation of the bladder caused blockages of his urethra. These were medical emergencies as poor Cho could not urinate each time this occured. Cho managed to damage the end of his p***s during these episodes so badly that he ended up requiring a perineal urethrostomy to remove the damaged appendage so that he could urinate freely again. He healed wonderfully from this procedure and has had little issues from his urinary tract since.
But unfortunately he was diagnosed with spondylosis( a slowly progressive, degenerative disease of the spine) at a similar time and has been having treatment and physiotherapy for this condition. He deteriorated alarmingly this year and a diagnosis of discospondylitis, an infection of the vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs of the spine was made and required prolonged antibiotics and increased analgesia.
Thankfully Cho is improving and doing really well again and is enjoying life.
