Savsnet - University of Liverpool Monitoring illness and disease in companion animals using real-time data from veterinary practices and diagnostic laboratories
(4)

SAVSNET is a resource where data is collected from
veterinary practices and laboratories in the UK. The SAVSNET team make the data 'research ready' so that scientists can use it investigate disease in companion animals. SAVSNET encompasses two distinct, but complementary approaches, SAVSNET-Lab and SAVSNET-Vet, designed to investigate the disease status of the small animal vet-visiting population.

SAVSNET-Lab utilises a process of scanning surveillance to monitor the many diseases which are tested for at veterinary diagnostic laboratories across the UK. SAVSNET-Vet is near-real-time (within 24 hours), practice-based syndromic surveillance, where participating veterinary surgeons record information at the end of each consultation. This information is sent to SAVSNET were it is securely stored and analysed. SAVSNET has been awarded ethical approval by the University of Liverpool’s independent Research Ethics Committee, and SAVSNET-Vet, which involves veterinary practices, is supported by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. SAVSNET was developed by BSAVA and University of Liverpool, and is now funded by BBSRC.

Everyone is talking about ChatGPT and other large language models. If we are to use them wisely, it is vital we develop safe places to test them. In our most recent research, we asked a simple question - can ChatGPT spot clincial narratives about obese dogs? The answer seems to be a YES 😃...with caveats 😟. Check out our infographic here... https://tinyurl.com/bdenk7wv. Kindly supported by a canine welfare grant from the nice people at Dogs Trust 🐾

Look at those horrible critters slither. We are now approaching peak flystrike risk in rabbits 🐰🐰and other species that live outdoors. Take a look at our brand new interactive dashboard which highlights the increased risk of flystrike in a range of species at this time of year. https://tinyurl.com/h3cxrm55. Please check your pets...and if in doubt, ask your vet.

Please support our friends at Wag-Lab Westgarth Anthrozoology Group Research who have launched this survey for vets seeing imported dogs in practice 🙂

Do you currently work as a small animal veterinary surgeon in the UK? Do you encounter imported dogs or puppies in your practice? Please complete our survey on the health and welfare of imported dogs presenting to UK veterinary surgeons. The survey is anonymous, can be completed online and will take 15- 20 minutes of your time. Results will be fed back to DEFRA and disseminated to the veterinary profession to inform policy and help improve understanding of issues and care around imported dogs.

Please click the link here to participate in our survey or enter into browser https://tinyurl.com/importeddogs

Recently David Holdsworth of APHA came to visit Leahurst. This was an opportunity to discuss work being done in IVES with Matthew Baylis, and also to find out about SAVSNET, Evsnet - University of Liverpool and our new initiative FAVSNET (for farm animals). Discussions also included our virtual biobank, outbreak detection and text mining. Interesting to talk about how our surveillance networks could complement those of APHA's.

Part of this project included the development of a button on the SAVSNET window where practices can report suspected adverse events directly to the VMD with ease.

New research suggests that empowerment of veterinary nurses, coupled with technological innovations such as enabling reporting via practice management systems, might improve adverse event reporting rates in veterinary medicine. Read the full paper at http://ow.ly/BpIA50KUfPL
