💥Don't skip the warm up!!💥

Warming up your horse is crucial to prepare their muscles, joints, and cardiovascular system for exercise, significantly reducing the risk of injury by increasing blood flow, flexibility, and range of motion, ultimately allowing them to perform at their best and preventing potential overstretching or strain on cold muscles and tendons; essentially, it's like getting your horse "ready to go" before demanding activity, similar to how humans warm up before exercise.

Key benefits of warming up your horse:

Reduced injury risk:
By gradually increasing blood flow and joint mobility, a proper warm-up helps prevent strains, sprains, and other musculoskeletal injuries.

Improved performance:

With increased oxygen delivery to the muscles, your horse will have better stamina and can perform at a higher level.

Mental preparation:

A warm-up can help your horse focus and become more responsive to your aids, especially if they are nervous or anxious.

Enhanced flexibility:

Warming up helps to stretch and loosen muscles, improving their range of motion.

Joint Lubrication:

As the horse moves during a warm-up, synovial fluid is produced in the joints, which acts as a natural lubricant.

➡️Important aspects of a proper warm-up:⬅️

Gradual progressuon: Start with slow walking and gradually increase the intensity to a light trot, depending on your horse's fitness level and the planned activity.

Consider the horses age and condtion: Older horses or those with joint issues may need a longer warm-up period.

Include stretching exercises: Incorporate light stretching movements to further improve flexibility.

Monitor your horse's responce: Pay attention to their breathing, heart rate, and body language to gauge if they are adequately warmed up.

14/02/2025

The special relationship between a horse and rider is often described as a deep bond built on trust, mutual understanding, and a strong emotional connection, where the horse can sense and respond to their rider's emotions, allowing for a unique level of communication and partnership beyond just commands; essentially, it's a team dynamic where both individuals rely on each other and can provide comfort and support.

Intuition and sensitivity:
Horses are highly perceptive animals that can pick up on subtle changes in their rider's body language, voice tone, and energy levels, allowing them to adapt their behavior accordingly.

Non-verbal communication:
Much of the communication between a horse and rider happens through subtle cues like body posture, weight distribution, and leg aids, not just verbal commands.

Emotional connection:
A rider can feel a sense of calm and well-being when riding a trusted horse, while the horse may also seek comfort and reassurance from their rider.

Shared experience:
Spending time together in training, riding, and caring for the horse builds a deep connection and shared understanding.

Mutual respect:
A successful horse-rider relationship is based on respect for each other's abilities and limitations.

🥇 1st Elementary

Sol's first trip out of the year yesterday.
I'm not ashamed to say, he's not easy! And lately, he's been feeling a little too well!! Displaying all sorts of marvellous added extras when training at home 🤦🏻‍♀️

The old lad warmed up beautifully on a very cold wet winters day 🫶🏻 our tests, despite the fantastic results, I felt could've been better. However, having not been out for over 4 months, I'm very proud of him 💙
He felt mega and really gave some beautiful work for me
Well done chap
Looking forward to the next one 🤗

Huge thanks to our little support team for chearing us on yesterday 😘

🌟 The Clydesdale 🌟

Conidered versatile because it can be used for a variety of purposes, including pulling heavy loads in agriculture, driving carriages, being ridden for pleasure, and even participating in show competitions, thanks to its strength, calm temperament, and impressive appearance; essentially, it can work on a farm, pull a carriage, and be ridden recreationally depending on the situation.

Key points about Clydesdale versatility:
Traditional Workhorse:
Originally bred for heavy farm work like pulling plows and hauling heavy loads.

Driving Horse:
Widely used for pulling carriages and participating in driving competitions due to their strength and steady gait.

Riding Horse:
While not the most common riding horse, Clydesdales can be ridden for leisure, particularly by experienced riders due to their size.

Show Ring Presence:
Their striking appearance with feathered legs makes them popular for halter classes and showmanship events.

Calm Temperament:
Known for their gentle nature.

🌟 Throwback Thursday 🌟

Coming from a totally non horsey family, I learned to ride on 'those ponies in the field next door'... because I went and asked one day!!

Back then, I could only have dreamed of owning my own horses, competing and running my own yard. Just dreams of a little girl.

Dreams can become a reality if you work hard at it!!

How did your equestrian journey begin?

Within the British Isles, there are 3 Native breeds, these being the Clydesdale, Shire and Suffolk Punch. However, there is a fourth that is highly recognised, that of the Percheron even though this breed was imported many many years ago.

The first known records for this breed show that from the 8th Century onward, the Percheron came from an area called Le Perche, a district of Normandy, France.

The Percheron would have altered in appearance since the 8th Century, and they have since been dispersed around the world with several Percheron breed Societies being formed, producing their own studbooks. There are slight differences in appearance between the French, North American, and British Percheron, hence today’s reference to the three types. In general, the height of the British Percheron is between that of the French and the North American.

Despite all the changes in breeding over the centuries, the Percheron remains one of the favourite heavy horse breeds. There are still two types; the heavy draft and the lighter draft. The horse is known for being amenable, energetic and elegant, hence its popularity today.

🌟 Keeping your veteran horse in top condition 🌟

As horses age, their bodies transform, often in ways owners don’t expect. Muscular mass, for example, changes noticeably enough in some horses that certain regions of their bodies take on completely different shapes.

Muscle-wasting, also known as sarcopenia, is common in aged horses and describes generalized muscle loss that gradually results in weakness. Sarcopenia may be related to “inflammaging,” a low-grade inflammatory state associated with old age that makes horses more susceptible to infection and disease.

Building muscle on a horse involves a combination of proper nutrition, exercise, and care. Here are some key strategies to help achieve this:

1. Nutrition
High-Quality Feed: Provide a balanced diet with high-quality hay or pasture, and consider adding grains or commercial feed designed for muscle building.
Protein: Ensure adequate protein intake, as it is essential for muscle growth. Look for feeds that contain good sources of protein, such as alfalfa hay or soybean meal.
Supplements: Consider supplements like amino acids, vitamins, and minerals that support muscle development, such as Vitamin E and selenium.

2. Exercise
Strength Training: Incorporate exercises that promote muscle development, such as:
Hill Work: Walking or trotting up hills builds strength in the hindquarters.
Cavaletti and Jumping: These exercises improve coordination and strength.
Lunging: Use lunging to encourage the horse to engage its muscles actively.
Conditioning Rides: Gradually increase the intensity and duration of rides to improve overall fitness and muscle tone.

3. Consistency
Regular Routine: Establish a consistent training schedule to allow the horse to adapt and build muscle effectively.
Rest and Recovery: Ensure adequate rest days to prevent overtraining and allow muscles to recover and grow.

4. Veterinary Care
Health Check: Regular veterinary check-ups to monitor the horse's health and nutritional needs.
Injury Prevention: Be mindful of signs of fatigue or injury and adjust training accordingly.

06/01/2025

How do you build a horse's trust? How do you begin to trust him or her to be safe? Trust is a big topic and one worth investing in, because without it, it's simply two individuals doing things together, when one or neither one wants to and that's a whole lot of "not fun!"
Lots of people tend to think that the way you build trust is by never asking the horse to do something uncomfortable. Or by never being firm with a horse in a dangerous situation. It seems logical. Don't upset the apple cart and she will trust you more. Ironically, it's the opposite again. You can't win a horse's trust by being a carrot all the time. Sometimes you have to be a leader. And what is a leader?

A leader is many things, he/she is someone who is caring, yes, but also someone who is willing to do hard things. Someone who doesn't avoid something because it's uncomfortable.
