Why should you be concerned about neck muscles?
The neck is really important for the horse’s locomotion. The nuchal ligament induces big repercussions on the entire body when the neck moves.
For instance at canter, the movement of the neck helps the engagement of the hind legs. Indeed, when the neck rises during the suspension, it allows the nuchal ligament to unwind and helps the engagement of the hind legs right before they touch the ground. The same way, the neck going down helps the push of the hind legs with a compression of the vertebral body. That’s why a rigid neck (caused by a bad musculature or a rigid hand) doesn’t allow the horse to have a nice locomotion.

The neck muscles go hand in hand with the overall muscles
The ultimate goal of a lot of riders is to have a horse that is “light” in your hand, a horse which holds itself. This only comes with harmonious foreleg muscles, so the neck but not only the neck! A horse can’t be light or harmonious without a great musculature around the abs (so the back), the glutes and the pectorals.

The neck holds a central place in the horse’s locomotion. Even so, how beautiful the neck looks shouldn’t be a goal as such but rather a consequence of a well done job. Its development has to be a part of a global muscle development which, let’s just say, takes some time!!

Thinking that your horse has to have its neck as the highest point to build its neck is a mistake that will only rigidify your horse in a high attitude and will make you enter a vicious circle.

Indeed, a horse kept in a high attitude will not be able to use it’s natural pendulum like head movement. The nuchal ligament will be relaxed and the horse’s back will bend. To carry the rider, it will be forced to rigidify its back muscles and will be unable to bend, use its abdominals and engage its hind legs.

It’s useless to pull up the head of a horse which is already unable to move and engage its legs correctly!

Yes, if you want to build neck muscles, you have to start with the basics: managing the gait, the suppleness, relaxation and quality of the contact.

🌟 Riding from the ground: long reining 🌟

Long reining has long been an integral part of the breaking-in process in terms of getting a horse used to the rein and voice aids and establishing the steering and brakes. It also gives you the opportunity to expose a young horse to scenarios outside the arena, getting them more confident going on their own.

Long reining is equally beneficial for older horses and those recovering from injury.

You can long rein in straight lines, which is low stress and intensity and it is effectively like riding your horse but from the ground. You can use half halts, change the bend, ask for transitions and perform many different shapes and movements.

For a horse that has been on box rest and needs rehabilitating, long reining is perfect.

It’s great for bringing a horse back into light work without the rider having to get straight on, which is safer.

Long reining doesn’t have to be restricted to the arena – as long as your horse is established in the long reins, you can take them anywhere.

Can you think of a successful relationship without mutual trust? Break that trust and you break the relationship. Subvert it and it’s almost impossible to put together again.

Well, maybe horses are more forgiving than humans, but they remember. Plus, anyone who thinks they’re “teaching their horse respect” with what they do to the equine vs. how they relate to him is living in a dream world. Sure, you can gain his fear, her obedience, his compliance and her cooperation, but you’ll never win a horse’s trust with an end-game in mind that doesn’t include the equine in the conversation.

While it’s not fair to try to put the human ego into play when characterizing horse emotions, horses that are valued, understood and encouraged to be partners in a job they can embrace (and accomplish) tend to be a lot happier than those that are conditioned to be robots, schooled into submission or left to languish with no horse/human work activities. Appreciated and included horses will do amazing things to tackle the challenges you face together. Respect is a two-way street, whether you’re talking person-to-person or human-to-horse. Lose sight of this and your relationship with your equine partner is more likely to be built on fear or pain than trust. If a partnership with your horse is your aim (some would rather have minions), where both contribute to solutions as you face challenges together, you need to be able to hear and acknowledge what your horse is trying to tell you. You might not always agree with it – and it’s OK to say no – but if you’re looking for a lifelong bond that’s reciprocal, it’s important to let your horse know that you’re listening to his input. Trust and respect are built through what you do with the horse not what you do to him.

The magic of the horse-human relationship comes with the responsibility to give horses a good life, rather than what we might think is a good life.

Understand the horse's mental state: A horse's welfare is not just about the absence of negative experiences, but also the presence of positive ones. A horse's mental state is influenced by many factors, and it's important to provide a positive mental state.

Listen to the horse: Try to understand what the horse is trying to tell you.

Be willing to change: Be open to trying new things and changing if something isn't working.
Consider the horse's individual needs: Horses are individuals, and finding the right job for them is important.

Consider the horse's mindset: A rider's mindset can impact how they think, feel, and experience life with their horse. Working on mindset can help improve the experience of owning and riding a horse.

Provide a high-fiber diet: Horses are fiber-processing animals, and they need access to a high-fiber diet to thrive.

Consider the horse's social skills: Horses that haven't been exposed to herd situations may not have the social skills to go out with other horses.

🥀 we will remember them 🥀

Some one was singing
Up a twisty stair,
A fragment of a song,
One sweet, spring day,
When twelve o’clock was ringing,
Through the sunny square –

There was a lad baith frank and free,
Cam’ doon the bonnie banks o’ Dee
Wi’ tartan plaid and buckled shoon,
An’ he’ll come nae mair to oor toon.

He dwells within a far countree,
Where great ones do him courtesie,
They’ve gien him a golden croon,
An’ he’ll come nae mair to oor toon.

No one is singing
Up the twisty stair.
Quiet as a sacrament
The November day.

Can’t you hear it swinging,
The little ghostly air?
Hear it sadly stray
Through the misty square,
In and out a doorway,
Up a twisty stair
Tartan plaid and buckled shoon,
He’ll come nae mair to oor toon.

Opening meet 2025/25

I had the absolute pleasure of riding lovely Bonnie this year.
Her owner so very very kindly offered me the ride for the day ❤️
Other than looking like a pea on a mountain... I had a fabulous day on Bonnie. Such a sweet girl. I so appreciative to have been able to take her out.

Bon Bon has been rehabbing from injury and the time had come to see if she would be able to jump comfortably again and the answer is most certainly yes!! 😊

🌟 The square halt 🌟

A square halt is when your horse transitions from their gait to halt, with their hooves forming a perfect rectangle and a hoof in each corner. The front and back legs should be as parallel as possible, so that if you were to look from the front, they would appear to have two legs. A square halt is performed in every Dressage test – and may feature more than once as you move higher up the grades, so you could say it’s kind of a big deal.

Unlike other Dressage movements, practising the square halt is not physically demanding on you or your horse, so there is absolutely no excuse for leaving it to one side when training. You can practise your square halt anywhere, in the school, field or out on a hack.

A square halt requires a certain strength in the horse's core muscles and hind end, which is why they like to try and increase the "wheel base", so that the hind legs don't have to carry so much weight.

Square halts are something that doesn’t necessarily improve by merely riding halt transitions. They will, however, improve if you pay close attention to keeping a steady tempo right up to the halt, keeping the horse aligned properly on the line of travel, and connecting all four legs to the ground and the weight. If you focus on these things, the square halts will develop organically as a byproduct of the overall training. They are not a trick that you put on the horse, but instead they are the result of balance, straightness, and suppleness.
