Opening meet 2025/25

I had the absolute pleasure of riding lovely Bonnie this year.
Her owner so very very kindly offered me the ride for the day ❤️
Other than looking like a pea on a mountain... I had a fabulous day on Bonnie. Such a sweet girl. I so appreciative to have been able to take her out.

Bon Bon has been rehabbing from injury and the time had come to see if she would be able to jump comfortably again and the answer is most certainly yes!! 😊

🌟 The square halt 🌟

A square halt is when your horse transitions from their gait to halt, with their hooves forming a perfect rectangle and a hoof in each corner. The front and back legs should be as parallel as possible, so that if you were to look from the front, they would appear to have two legs. A square halt is performed in every Dressage test – and may feature more than once as you move higher up the grades, so you could say it’s kind of a big deal.

Unlike other Dressage movements, practising the square halt is not physically demanding on you or your horse, so there is absolutely no excuse for leaving it to one side when training. You can practise your square halt anywhere, in the school, field or out on a hack.

A square halt requires a certain strength in the horse's core muscles and hind end, which is why they like to try and increase the "wheel base", so that the hind legs don't have to carry so much weight.

Square halts are something that doesn’t necessarily improve by merely riding halt transitions. They will, however, improve if you pay close attention to keeping a steady tempo right up to the halt, keeping the horse aligned properly on the line of travel, and connecting all four legs to the ground and the weight. If you focus on these things, the square halts will develop organically as a byproduct of the overall training. They are not a trick that you put on the horse, but instead they are the result of balance, straightness, and suppleness.

🌎 Mental Health Day 🌎

I've always got an ear to listen if ever ANYONE just needs a chat! Any time 🫶🏻

It's time to prioritise mental health in the work place.

As grooms, we devote our life and attention to providing and caring for horses. But it is important to also remember to care for yourself.

Keeping your own mental health in check will transfer over to your workplace and having happier and healthier horses. I’ve compiled a list of tips on being a groom while navigating through mental health challenges.

Talk to your employer and keep them aware of what’s going on. You don’t need to go into detail, but just a mention of “Hey, I have some personal things going on right now that might make my work a little slower. Or I might seem a little off at times, but I’m just working through some things.”

Take time off if you need. It’s important to rest when you’re struggling. If you’re not sleeping or eating well, you aren’t able to take care of the horses to your best ability. It can also turn into a safety issue.

Self-care. Take time out of your busy schedule to do something for yourself. Your horses get doted on all day every day, there’s no reason you don’t deserve the same! Book a spa day (or create an at home spa!), spend a couple hours shopping, cook yourself a meal, go for a walk.

Find a therapist, doctor, etc., who you trust to have conversations with about what’s going on and how to fix it.

If you find your mental health is declining due to job stress, it’s OK to leave and find a new job. Your happiness and well-being is priority, and if you’re not happy somewhere it’s not worth staying regardless the pay, experiences, etc.

Horses most certainly have a sense of fairness, just as they are good judges of leadership and trustworthiness. Because they are herd animals, they are mindful of leadership, hierarchy, rules, and ramifications of behavior. They are instinctively drawn to strong leadership, with a compelling desire to be accepted in a herd and a profound fear of banishment from the herd. Horses thrive when leadership, rules and structure exist and they flail in the absence of it.

That’s not to say a horse never does anything wrong or that he would think any discipline was bad. He knows when he is breaking a rule or pushing a boundary and he usually responds well to fair punishment. But when rules are unclear or inconsistently enforced, when you say one thing but then do another, when you inadvertently punish even though no punishment was intended, or when the punishment does not fit the crime, a horse will feel that they are being treated unfairly, and his trust in you diminishes.

How would you know if you horse feels like you are treating him unfairly? This is what varies greatly with horses—given his natural temperament, he may react strongly or not at all to any perceived injustice. Reactions from the horse may range from a slight tensing and lifting of the head, to shaking the head, refusals, running through the bridle, crow-hopping, bucking, or shutting down (becoming nonresponsive). Of course, there could be many causes for these type of reactions in a horse, but whenever a horse is frustrated, it’s always important to consider your own actions, and how they may be viewed by the horse. After all, none of us is a perfect leader for our horses.

This made my absolute day yesterday 🥰

What I do is so much more than working with the horses. I strive to get horse and owner back on the same page, enjoying each other's company in doing what they love.

It's all well and good me being able to work with the horse and work out what they need, why and how. But then to just hand the horse back and say, there you go, sorted. How worthless is that if the owner is then left asking ermm, OK, right how?!

His is why I ALWAYS involve all parties in the horses' journey.

It's a learning curve for everyone.
First horse
Then owner
Then the team

Of course, I am always on hand if ever I'm needed, even if it's a call or text, questions and answers. Or even just a hand hold. For both, can go a long way!!

Embarrassment is the cost of entry.

I think that most of us want to offer the world something of quality, something that the world will consider good or important. And that is really the enemy, because it's not up to us whether what we do is any good or not. And if History has taught us anything, it's that the world is an extremely unreliable critic!!

🌟 what a lovley young horse 🌟

I had the pleasure of taking this very handsome young man out on exercise on behalf of his owner last weekend.

He's a big chap standing at 17.1hh and at only 5 yrs old, more growing to do! He's not long out of race training.

This lovely young horse, although finding the pony party very exciting, looked after me the whole morning, not putting a hoof out of line, cantering across stubble with all of the other horsss absolutely beautifully and stood quiet at the pub for breakfast! (Most importantly) 😅

Big future for a young horse with a fantastic attitude to life.

The most common thing I see and hear is "we have done all the checks" and that the horse isn't in pain.

Thing is, it's not that easy.

One person's "all the checks", is all too often very different from someone else's.

Don't be too quick to rule out pain. There's always a reason for a horse's behaviour, and it's always a valid one.
