Maybe a controversial opinion, but one I feel strongly about...

With alot of feed companies now advertising recovery and hydration mashes on the market, many horse owners reach for them when the weather is hot or if they go to competition etc.

It makes me wince... why? Well, we are all taught, and it has been scientifically proven, that sudden dietary changes for horses can be catastrophic to their health. Say your horse or pony normally has a good forage rich , low sugar and starch diet and suddenly they have a bucket of alfa and grain and cereal.. yes they will find it tasty like I would a dirty great big of chocolate cake! 🎂 But my stomach won't thank me for it later and nor will your horses'

You're much better off, if you're wanting to ensure your horse is hydrated and has the added benefits of electrolytes, to simply make their normal rations, add good quality electrolytes and make it a mash yourself!

Sudden changes in a horse's feed and forage to prevent digestive upset, colic, and other health issues, as their gut bacteria require time to adapt to new dietary components. A gradual change, typically over 7-14 days, is crucial for maintaining digestive health and avoiding adverse reactions.

I had the pleasure of taking one of client's horses out for a bit of fun this weekend. It was his first trip out for over a year and he loved every minute 🙂
He doesn't jump at home, his little face lit up when I popped him over a few fun jumps.

Charlotte Forrester joined us on my Abso, safe to say they had a great time too!

It's not about gimmicks, trends or quick fixes. You don't need special equipment or expensive tools to build a strong healthy topline. You need a clear understanding of how the horses' body works. A plan that actually targets the right muscle groups and commitment to show up to your horse consistently.

Knowledge, so you can see what your horse needs and why.

Consistency, because change comes from what you repeat not what you occasionally do.

The right exercises, proven progressive movements that help your horse gain strength, balance and body awareness. Without relying on force, gadgets or shortcuts.

💧Electrolytes💧

Electrolytes are essential minerals that play a crucial role in a horse's body, particularly for hydration, nerve and muscle function, and maintaining fluid balance. They are lost through sweat, urine, and breath, and supplementing them can improve performance, aid in recovery, and encourage proper hydration.

When to Supplement:

During and after exercise:
Horses lose electrolytes through sweat, so supplementing after exercise is crucial for recovery.
In hot weather:
Increased temperatures lead to increased sweating, so electrolytes should be supplemented to prevent dehydration and support thermoregulation.
During travel:
Travel can be stressful and lead to dehydration and electrolyte loss, so supplementation can be beneficial.
For horses with a history of tying-up:
Electrolytes can help regulate muscle function and potentially reduce the risk of tying-up episodes.

Important Considerations:
Individual needs vary:
Horses have different sweat rates and activity levels, so electrolyte supplementation should be tailored to their individual needs.
Consult with a veterinarian or equine nutritionist:
If you are unsure about the appropriate type or amount of electrolyte supplementation for your horse, it's best to consult with a professional.
Over-supplementation can be harmful:
Too much of certain electrolytes can be detrimental to a horse's health, so it's important to follow recommended guidelines.

Why confidence is important.
Alongside building this competence, we need to build our confidence in ourselves so we can act with decisiveness, sureness, and calmness no matter what the situation. This is a great comfort to horses. They want to know the person they look to for decision making and interpreting their surroundings is confident in their assessments and decisions. This builds trust, especially when the outcomes of those decisions are good, which builds the horse’s constructive experiences. Then, the horse can learn to relax over time, knowing he will be shown the way forward if he is in doubt.

Why kindness is important.
Kindness is fundamental to earning trust and respect, both from people and horses. Kindness does not always mean being soft or mild – it means to demonstrate consideration, empathy, and kindness for what the horse or other needs. It means to appreciate the horse’s efforts, consider deeply how he is wired as a species, and act with his best interests at heart. This doesn’tjustmean, for example, caressing the horse to communicate that you appreciate his response, or speaking gently all the time. It also means, among many things, to treat him fairly, to not nag him, to not be condescending, to say “yes” and “no” to his behaviour when appropriate, and to provide the education and environment that best serve him.

🥉 3rd Handy hunter

Well, Asbo entered the show ring this weekend. He's far from a show pony and with his usual firey acrobatics I didn't hold a lot of hope..

However, by some miracle, he kept a lid on himself.. just! And managed 2 lovley ridden classes, popped the required jumps easily, his individual shows were lovely and he came home with 2 frillies and a beautiful engraved hip flask (unfortunately empty..😅)

Well done spicy carrot 🥕

The special relationship between a horse and rider is often described as a deep bond built on trust, mutual understanding, and a strong emotional connection, where the horse can sense and respond to their rider's emotions, allowing for a unique level of communication and partnership beyond just commands; essentially, it's a team dynamic where both individuals rely on each other and can provide comfort and support.

Intuition and sensitivity:
Horses are highly perceptive animals that can pick up on subtle changes in their rider's body language, voice tone, and energy levels, allowing them to adapt their behavior accordingly.

Non-verbal communication:
Much of the communication between a horse and rider happens through subtle cues like body posture, weight distribution, and leg aids, not just verbal commands.

Emotional connection:
A rider can feel a sense of calm and well-being when riding a trusted horse, while the horse may also seek comfort and reassurance from their rider.

Shared experience:
Spending time together in training, riding, and caring for the horse builds a deep connection and shared understanding.

Mutual respect:
A successful horse-rider relationship is based on respect for each other's abilities and limitations.

🥇 1st Novice
🥇 1st Elementary

Sol's first trip out of the year yesterday.
I'm not ashamed to say, he's not easy! And lately, he's been feeling a little too well!! Displaying all sorts of marvellous added extras when training at home 🤦🏻‍♀️

The old lad warmed up beautifully on a very cold wet winters day 🫶🏻 our tests, despite the fantastic results, I felt could've been better. However, having not been out for over 4 months, I'm very proud of him 💙
He felt mega and really gave some beautiful work for me
Well done chap
Looking forward to the next one 🤗

Huge thanks to our little support team for chearing us on yesterday 😘
