⭐️Boarders of the week ⭐️

Last week. I'm behind again! Meet Rosa (harlequin on the right) & Sonny (sooty fawn, left). These delicious confident little mini lops are an absolute pleasure. Friendly, interactive & all around my ankles they follow me everywhere. Curiosity killed the cat they say, it got to the rabbits first! These two are supremely nosey looking into every tub, box or bag that's available to them, to the point where it looks like they want to physically help me do everything. A little scratch on the head, some praise & they scamper away happily to watch me at a little distance.. until I move and they're back again. They are one of the few buns I care for that are pellet free so they have a little more energy as a result and eat a terrific amount of hay. Watching them bounce away happily with a hay stick every night was the highlight of my day. I've never seen anyone look so happy for a hay stick!

⭐️Boarders of last week⭐️

The adorable twins Bunny & Clyde. I knew them as babies & this was their first stay back as neutered adults. They're a year old now & fully settled into a domestic life of pushing around their hoomans. And boy are they good at it. In our defence, look at those faces😍😍 could you resist them?
Sweet, friendly, squishy, playful & terribly social they are the perfect version of rabbit that everyone wants. Bunny is a bit more so than Clyde, he is naturally more wary & hangs back more to suss you out. But once he realised there was no danger he quickly joined in the attack..as soon as I walked in they went nuts, flying over for a cuddle & of course..to poach something to eat. They are clearly used to someone being around them a lot & really fed off my constant presence, boarder bunnies need that presence to feel safe & comfortable in a strange environment, it really helps them through. These delicious fiends left as coriander fanatics as it was gently introduced to their diets during their stay, now they have more to the repotoire to make them happy. Thinking ahead this only helps them should they require medical care that results in poor appetite. The more you have to help them, the easier that process of recovery is.

⭐️Boarders if the week⭐️

I just love a trio or group of sows. Their social dynamics are completely different, plus y'know, the more piggies there are the better! (From left) Lima (agouti teddy), Frida (flame coloured crested) & Inca (tricolour abyssinian) came back for a week & have been joyfully cooed over, squished & stuffed with as much food as they can eat! Frida is quite shy & nervous choosing to take herself away from contact, Lima is confident, curious & likes a cuddle. Inca is bold, sassy, placid & interactive. As long as you have peaflakes you are tolerated! Two of the three have unique health problems. Lima has had an implant fitted to help control her hormones. This happy humper pestered her sisters a bit too much! She has a lipoma located on her tummy between her ni***es which could be an indication of ovarian cysts. For now she's calmed down but her future may involve a spay. Inca has congenital dental issues requiring regular teeth trimming. She has malocclusion of the incisors & wonky molars that grow into the cheek, she's had a molar removed along with an abscess. For a while with such intense treatment it was touch & go but she's battled back to full strength & the treatments are becoming further spaced out as she finds her feet.
It's such a pleasure to care for such special girls, to learn their stories, spend time with them & know their unique problems make me a better, more educated person.

I love a trio or little group of sows! The social dynamic is completely different, plus, the more piggies there are the better! Lima (agouti teddy), Frida (flame crested) & Inca (abyssinian tricolour) came back for a week & have been thoroughly cooed over, squished & stuffed silly with as much food as they can manage! Frida is very shy & gets stressed with too much contact, Lima is confident, relaxed & enjoys a cuddle, Inca is bold, fearless & not afraid to put you in your place. You must have pea flakes & fuss her she when asks too😉 Inca has congenital dental issues meaning she has to have regular teeth trimming. A molar is growing at an angle that requires burring off & she has malocclusion of the incisors. She also had a molar

⭐️Boarders of the wheek⭐️

How I have adored these little girls ❤️ Meet Snickers (left, funky hair do) & Oreo (black & white crested pig) a beautiful pair of young sows that are so tame it's unreal. Social, friendly & relaxed it was immediately obvious these young ladies are handled an awful lot by their little loving humans. These two walk to the front of the hutch or curiously sit there & you can just stroke them. Normal pigs flee for their lives, Snix in particular bumbles over happily for a scratch. Very sadly a day after their arrival Snickers was spotted breathing heavily & a day later started to make a wheezy rattly noise, classic signs of a respiratory infection. I rushed her to the vet & got her the required medicine which didn't work. It was a race against time to get the next strength of antibiotics which thankfully kicked in after one dose. She is now back to optimal health & I've had an awful lot of cuddling! Guinea pigs are often carriers of bacteria which when exposed to stress (like changing their environment) suddenly activates & you see the rapid development of respiratory infections. This is an extremely serious problem for piggies & is deemed an emergency. Respiratory infections quickly overwhelm those tiny lungs & can kill in just 48 hours. Therefore it is imperative if you notice this wheezing they are seen by a vet as fast as you can. We shouldn't ever house guinea pigs on sawdust (sawDUST), keep them in well ventilated environments, avoid any dusty hay & make sure pigs are cleaned out throughly every 2-3 days with a strong animal safe disinfectant to limit the risk of respiratory problems.

⭐️ Boarders of the week⭐️

Again, technically last week. Being busy means the socials drop!
Star boarders were Bob (harlequin lop) & Flora (fawn lionhead) mainly for their complete startling personality change from when I first met them 2 years ago. Bob started off moody, defensive & territorial. Completely food obsessed I had to watch my hands, I really couldn't touch him much & cleaning was a pain. Now? He's like a little puppy dog following me everywhere, honking while he runs in circles around my feet (round & round he goes, never stopping!), he loves to be stroked & loves to be helpful by nosing into everything I do. It's incredibly endearing & very surprising but I embrace his change. The rabbits here get the freedom to do what they want & interact when they want. I NEVER force contact. Some clients have problems with that but they are prey animals. Handing them the power rather than forcing them into being afraid is the best way forward, they become brave by themselves. That choice is important. Flora has always been very unsocial, timid & shy. But she's started to let me stroke her now. As long as her & Bob have each other that's all that matters. Bob has to always be kept under close observation because like a lot of lops he is prone to ear infections, keen eyes & quick action makes all the difference. Boarding them has become a complete joy, these things often take time. As rabbits age they mellow, Bob is living proof❤️

⭐️Boarders of the week⭐️
Technically last week, I'm a bit late on the uptake lately!
Nacho (sooty fawn mini lop) & Truffle (netherland dwarf) were bonded loving companions at the start. Sadly bonds can suddenly break for no apparent reason & that is what happened here, attempts to bond back have resulted in injury. I boarded them as a pair in 2022 & this year I've boarded them as two singles. Both are very confident self assured little men with strong personalities, perhaps this is where they clashed. Truffle is very headstrong, impatient & knows what he wants. If he doesn't get this instantly he will tantrum & it will be your fault. Nacho is a little more relaxed & amiable but averse to too much human attention. Picking him up & giving him a little squeeze everyday before he scampered off for free roaming was the highlight of my day everyday. There's is nothing quite like a grumpy little ball of fluffy cute! In these situations we know that companionship is key for buns. Does it mean we rehome one to keep the other in a new pairing? (How can you just give away your bunny that you adore?) Do you have to sacrifice that need & keep both buns single yet mostly happy because you made them a promise of commitment? Or do you have 4 buns? (Really not possible in many situations due to space & finances). There is no right or wrong here, things are not always black & white. This is a judgement free zone, I advise & help where I can but lead with empathy. If it happened with my boys could I give one up? No way.

⭐️ Boarder of the week⭐️

Have you met Bugs bunny? He's too cute! He's a netherland dwarf cross sitting pretty at a few years old. He often goes by the names Buggy, Bugsy, Buggles & Buggy Boo whilst with me putting up with each one like a champ. He is a little ball of obstinate spirit & energy. He loves his space & values being out as much as possible sitting by you whilst doing bunny things, he does love a cuddle, he is a little licker. Bugs is quick to lose his temper because this little gentleman knows his own mind & isn't afraid to fight for what he believes in 😍 Tiny terror is a long weekend boarder usually so this past weekend has been blessed with his presence.
Looking forward to the next one!

Strawberry (tan) & Pom Pom (white).

These delicious mini lops have had all day free roam of the boarding shed during their stay. Its been so interesting to watch them start off so nervous then unfold into these confident bunnies that are ever so friendly. Now they're just cocky & destructive!

They seem to thrive on attention purposely seeking me out & creating carnage in every job I have to do giving me double the work. They are the literal representation of double trouble!!

This is their first stay at BBB. Hopefully the start of a beautiful friendship ❤️🐰

Kicking off ⭐️Boarder/s of the Week⭐️
An idea a friend gave me to exclusively celebrate the adorable companionship these perfect animals give me during their stay, a way to highlight unique personalities & looks, draw attention to quirks & of course to celebrate them as remarkable individuals!

This is Onix & Ziggy. Two handsome flame coloured boars at around 7 months old with very sweet dispositions. They came from our local rescue ARC, their owners did an awful lot of research & waited patiently for the perfect match whilst fostering. They contacted me about boarding before they even had them and when I met them it was clear how unique this family were. Perfect diet, all the right toys..it's so rare that it's astonishing. But incredibly pleasing! The boys themselves were quite shy here but had very good manners. They'll be back for Summer & I can't wait to hear how they've grown & flourished.

They're also brilliant poster boys for rescue. There are multiple ways to support rescues. Donations (toys, food, money), volunteering, fostering & adoption are all wonderfully helpful & greatly appreciated. Check with your rescue for what you can do to help❤️ it's so rewarding being involved.

Happy Easter everybun!🐰🐣

And for some reason our beautiful hopping friends are the symbol of a religious holiday. All to do with death, rebirth, fertility & the beginning of Spring. I'm not religious, instead I choose to worship all my little bunny friends in their fluffy glory but this time of year is very difficult for bunnies. Many are impulse bought from pet shops but these adorable animals are deceptively complicated. They're tiny, cute & cuddly for a few weeks only before the hormones kick in & reality hits..rabbits are not cuddly. They also chew everything, always need to run around & will often jump on your lap to either p*e on you or bite. Not quite the vision you expected is it? By May every rescue in the country is inundated with calls to take rabbits..the novelty has worn off. These little darlings are too destructive & unfriendly to be kept. It's a very sad cycle & thousands of bunnies suffer for our stupidity.
If you want rabbits please do your research & try understanding them as a species. They are not a simple children's pet. A child will not know if they’re unwell & will bore easily of their bunnies. Rabbits are shrouded in unrealistic expectations, every animal is a commitment that deserves research, time & money to support them. If you can't..please don't get involved. Rabbits are on average a 12 year commitment that will cost you thousands in hay, vets bills, adequate housing, enrichment & food. Stick to cuddly toys or chocolate. They're much easier to look after.

You wouldn't overly think animals born with beautiful fur would struggle with it much..it's natural to think they can manage alone. All rabbits are different however. One of mine, Nimbus, has a constant struggle with hair consumption we have to stay on top of. Otherwise it's GI Stasis episodes & vet trips. A lot of the time to maintain optimum health, optimum gut health particularly, it requires preventative care. Nimmy is the beta in his pair bond which means he's doing 80% of the licking & still grooming himself fastidiously. He lives on carpet, doesn't eat as much hay as he should & enjoys laying around more than he should! Just like cats all the fur they lick they consume, but unlike cats they do not produce fur balls. So all that fur has to pass through their stomach & intestines as the only way to lose it. Too much fur passing through can cause blockages & kill as the entry to the small intestine is only 1cm wide. Therefore our furry friends require our help to get them through moults especially..but prone bunnies like Nimbus need a preventative routine all the time to ensure he is never really put in a position to struggle. You can see signs of gut slowdown, I see some very key ones with Nims that appear so minor you don't really think they're a problem. But a few minor signs all add up to a bigger scarier picture. It's worth noting the most important part of pet care is knowing your animals so you know what's normal or not. Here are some signs to look out for:

* Not eating as much hay
* Drinking less water
* Lazier & laying around more with not much desire to exercise.
* Grooming oneself more.
* Quieter, hiding away more with a slightly muted personality & not wanting as much fuss.
* They may become overkeen on pellets then lose interest.
* Same pattern with fresh food, they can become overkeen on fresh when they're less interested in pellets but then become uninterested in fresh later on.
* They may start consuming paper/cardboard with bursts of odd destructive behaviour.

Any changes in behaviour has a reason generally. Don't dismiss the signs, be clued up & work out a plan to help them. GI Stasis often follows them.

I do really suck at posting because it's actually time consuming..I rarely have the time & would rather be cuddling my boarders than playing around on socials.

Easter is always a difficult time for rabbits though & it wouldn't be responsible to not mention it. Thousands of bunnies are bought at this time of year because of this holiday, they do represent it so why not add one into the family, they're easy right? WRONG. DEAD WRONG. Rabbits are expensive, destructive & immense hard work. You must be prepared for syringe feeding at 4am, tears & losing thousands of ££. They eat your house, destroy your things & need more time than most people are prepared to give. They are a well thought out additive to a family. Not a spur of the moment decision. Please don't get rabbits if you don't know anything about them. In 4-6 weeks rescues will be inundated with calls from people asking them to take their rabbits. We dreaded this time of year when I worked in a rescue knowing that what we saw was a small fraction of the problem. Anyone can breed rabbits & there are millions in rescue because people didn't really know what that were getting themselves into.
Children should not be solely responsible for animals, they cannot look after themselves so why give them something complex to ignore when the novelty wears off. As the parent you wear the trousers & should learn the word No. It's up to us to do better on this planet, that starts with doing better for them. Buy chocolate or teddies. They won't suffer if you ignore them or throw them away.

11/12/2022

Brrr it's cold! I'm getting quite a few questions about keeping outside buns & pigs warm in this so I figured I'd write it up so its always around for you to look back on.
By now outside buns & pigs need to stay outside full time unless you see a visible struggle. If you bring them in now they need to stay in until March. This is because outside animals get winter coats, they get used to the cold temperatures & suddenly putting them in a heated environment can have dire consequences. This sudden change can shock their system & actually kill them. So you cannot get an outside animal used to heating. A 10⁰C difference is enough to kill & we are definitely there now. So please think carefully. They get along brilliantly outside believe it or not managing far better in this weather than heat!

1. Pack rabbit hutches with straw, piggy hutches with hay. Make sure pigs in particular have hides so they can snuggle away. Pigs cannot have straw so never use it, use hay! Yes some buns just wee/poo in the straw. Honestly just get used to sweeping it out. Straw is cheaper than washing beds or using hay. Straw is the known as the best thing to use as it traps pockets of air. Perfect nesting material for buns!
2. Use snugglesafe heatpads. These are amazing microwave heatpads that make such a difference. Get a spare & stick it under their water bowl so it doesn't freeze over. You'll find they'll be happier about drinking slightly warmed water anyway.
3. Use foil insulation around your hutches. I used superfoil from amazon. Easy! Wrap it around the back & sides. Move your hutches against walls or fences to stop back draughts.
4. Use old blankets to cover the front & back of the hutch. Drape it over the top & use a tarp over the top of this. Again it's about trapping air & stopping cold draughts.
5. Put old socks over water bottles to stop them from freezing solid. Give pigs extra cucumber/tomatoes as they will not be drinking as much in this weather. Check their water often.
6. Exercise is key so make sure they all have access to safe areas to run in. Moving our muscles generates heat. This means they can keep themselves warm so much easier.
7. Check them often!

A little selection of the beautiful buns I had stay for May half term/jubilee weekend this year! Quite a few new bunnies I've never met so I was able to help their families with all my useless information 🥰 advice is free and lifelong. Anyone willing to learn gets their ear chewed off! Lots of regulars came back who went home with new toys (through their toy packages) as well as new recommendations. It never stops, it's a welfare mission 💪🏻❤

Nora (Dutch on the left) and Rupert (black lop) are heading home tonight after another holiday here with me. I have seen a huge difference in Ru this time. He is deaf so can be a bit skitty upon contact sometimes & finds it hard to judge situations. However he has sought me out everyday for rubs & kisses which is massive progress. Nor is extremely friendly, these two are always begging for food so I leave them loose in the shed and check them every half hour giving them an extra handful of hay or oat readigrass. They literally spend their day snoozing & eating freely. Nice chill boarding life ❤🐰

12/02/2022

Mental health is really important. It's no different for our furry family members & we have a responsibility to ensure that their all round welfare needs are met. I meet hundreds of buns & pigs, all unique, all different. They all choose to interact with different types of enrichment so giving them an generic toy hoping it will work has a habit of getting the toy ignored. Discouraged people don't try anymore because their attempt didn't impress so why spend lots of money to have toys ignored?
At Bunny Burrows not many people bring toys for their bunnies boarding which means they get bored, miserable & destructive. I now ask everyone to bring toys for them & if you don't have any, or need help finding some I offer a toy package. These are individually catered to the rabbits personalities. Some buns are chewers, some are nibblers, some are throwers & some just prefer enrichment in the form of forage.
Toy packages are available at £15 & £30. If you want tunnels I recommend going higher because they cost more, on a £15 toy package all you would get is a tunnel and a chew ball. I am here to guide everyone & help. I can also do toy packages at different values, say £20 or £40. The mental health of our animals is just as important as ours particularly when they are vulnerable in a strange place. Also available for piggies & separately from boarding, just enquire!❤

It's been a long year, a trying one for us all. I haven't posted anything for such a long time now. I've now had Nimbus & Twinx for a whole year, these funny little men have certainly created a lot of happiness.
Bunny Burrows Boarding was set up to create safety & education to rabbit/guinea pig parents everywhere, to make lives happier, easier & brighter. I have achieved that. I have worked so hard to try to make a difference, I've lost much & gained much. This past year has taught me just how much I care about continuing a welfare mission. I have met so many new people & animals, found new regulars, inevitably lost some clients to time & finally realised I want a life outside of this. We can't all be one thing afterall. There are many places I want to see, things I'd like to do which I cannot do from a garden. Maybe for me the next move is learning to be more of a person.
Thank you so very much to every single person that had used the service this year. I had given up hope but you gave it back. I am so honoured to care for your babies.
To a happy healthy 2022 🥂 Stay safe, stay strong.

A huge part of owning rabbits is preventative care. For RAW 2021 I am going over the 5 welfare needs of rabbits that are absolutely necessary for providing our rabbits with safe happy lives. I want to draw attention to lots of things. This is why this account exists, to provide constant support & education everyday to help you on your journey to bunlightenment!🐰
There is a long video in my stories today physically showing you how to health check your rabbits. This post is a written version of this. The general idea with rabbits is they should be bright, curious & engaging. A hiding rabbit not eating much & not wanting to interact with the world around him is not well.
🐇 A healthy bunny has bright clean fully open eyes with no physical marks on them. The ears, nose & mouth should be clean, clear, a healthy pink. Front teeth should be short, aligned.
🐇 A bunny should have clean dander free fur, the feet should be clean with the claws meeting the fur at the tip of the toes.
🐇 Bottoms should be clean & checked at least once daily.
🐇 We must take note of behaviour, movement, anything particularly different.
🐇 Feel up your rabbits to note any changes (lumps) get them used to this contact & health checking will never be hard.
Is your rabbit molting? He needs brushing more. Is he looking curvy? Let's get him running around more. Health checking is constant & essential. It provides the best prevention for problems alongside our 5 welfare needs.

Caramel (L behind) didn't particularly want to keep still for this one! Sooty however was more than happy to lay around looking photogenic! These two ladies are coming back for Summer & I can't wait. In the bottom 5ft hutch they had prime view of all the rabbits running around and very sweetly did not hesitate to greet them everytime. They sat at the front trying to snuffle the bunnies, begging for food & generally watching everything on a constant basis. To have such curious, friendly and engaging piggies made the May bank holiday a great deal of fun.
