🐹 If you own a hamster in the UK (over 18s or parents/guardians only), we would like to hear from you. We are researching the association between the housing conditions, care of pet hamsters and their body condition and behaviour.

Been thinking...
Recent events have revived a few thoughts and feelings inside me.
Many people are aware of the concept of animal welfare. Animal welfare is not just covering the main aspects of Animal Act : shelter, feeding....
It also includes access to treatment. Yes, being able to treat an animal for a condition is paramount to prevent distress and suffering. I appreciate that vet bills can be expensive but then if you cannot save money aside or pay for a basic insurance, the truth is that you cannot afford to keep this animal.
Many pets will go through the years without illnesses or injuries. Until that day .... something unexpected happens... and they need treatments ..... sometimes expensive treatments....
When there are no good friend prepared to lend you money, there are no credit card to use, there are no insurance. So now what ?
Let me tell you what happens behind my consultation door :
1/ The luckiest pets are given the chance to be treated if they are surrendered to the surgery. These usually have injuries rather than illnesses. You may have seen pictures of our rescues on our page. Most of them needed surgery or medical treatment to "fix" them before they are rehomed. All the care given is at our own cost. And unfortunately, we cannot save every pet.
2/ The other unfortunate pets are put to sleep.
I often hear people blaming the vets for not being able to pay the bills. This saddens me for many reasons. Essentially because these pets are their owners' responsibility. The owners s responsibility is not when they are facing that situation. Responsible ownership has that extra layer of anticipation and thinking forward...you know that "in case something happens" .
Then there are a category of people, that I rarely met but I did meet. There are vile and selfish people. They are people who take a pet for their own and sole self centred need. These are people, who d rather have their pets put to sleep than surrendered or taken away from them. What sort of sick minds are those ?? Truly, they do exist and I have come accross them.
Be honest with yourself and assess if you can reasonably take a pet. If you cannot honestly assess your situation, ask a friend or someone you know to help you figure out if you can care for an additional pet in your household.
Finally, I will have a word of wisdom for people who sell or give away pets (supposedly against good care). Do not take people for face value, do not believe their words. Ask for proves of what they tell you about the care they provide to their current pets or previous pets. Red flags are people telling you their pets have not needed to go to the vets because they are healthy .... you must ask for a vet reference. In doubt, do not give away the pet.
How would you feel to know that you gave a kitten to someone last week and the kitten fell sick with a curable condition and was brought to the vet to be put to sleep because there was no money to pay for its care ???
I felt heartbroken when faced with that situation.
Pets give us unconditional love. The human animal relationship is a very special bond. It must go both ways.
Think before you take or offer a pet, especially this Christmas.
Be kind. Allow pets to have the best care opportunity.
