Heel work practice is a fantastic way to build focus and communication between you and Gwenny. Hereās a short, focused plan for practicing heel work:1. Warm-UpStart with a few minutes of engagement exercises to get Gwennyās focus on you. Use her name, treats, or a favorite toy to capture her attention.2. Foundation Position ā¢ Begin with Gwenny in the correct heel position (her shoulder in line with your leg). ā¢ Reward her for being in the right spot, even before moving.3. Short Sessions of Movement ā¢ Take 5ā10 steps at a time, rewarding Gwenny for staying beside you. ā¢ Use a marker word (like āYes!ā) or a clicker to mark the moment sheās in the correct position. ā¢ Gradually increase the number of steps before rewarding.4. Turns and Changes of Pace ā¢ Practice left and right turns. Start with slow, deliberate movements to guide her. ā¢ Add changes in pace: slow down, speed up, and reward her for staying with you.5. Distraction Work ā¢ Introduce mild distractions (toys, noises, or treats) while maintaining heel position. ā¢ Reward her for ignoring distractions and staying focused.6. Cool DownEnd with praise, playtime, or a gentle stroll to relax and reinforce the positive association with training.Would you like tips on making heel work more fun or dealing with specific challenges Gwenny might face?
