TOPIC TUESDAY: Loose Lead Walking

• Start in a Low-Distraction Area: Begin training in a quiet place where your dog can focus, like your home or garden.

• Use Positive Reinforcement: Bring treats and praise. Reward your dog for walking next to you with the lead slack.

• Establish a Cue: Choose a consistent cue like “let’s go” or “with me” to signal your dog to walk nicely by your side.

• Reinforce Good Behaviour: When your dog walks with a loose lead, immediately reward them with treats and praise. Keep the treats small and given frequently at first.

• Stop and Reset: If your dog starts pulling, stop walking immediately. Wait until the lead is loose before resuming walking.

• Practice Turning: Regularly change direction to keep your dog focused on you. This will help them learn to follow your lead rather than pulling ahead.

• Gradually Increase Distractions: As your dog improves, practice in more challenging environments with more distractions.

• Be Patient and Consistent: Training takes time and consistency. Keep sessions short and positive, and practice regularly.

• Seek Professional Help if Needed: If you’re struggling, pop me a message.

Retrieving lanes are great for training, especially with young dogs and beginners, as it helps them to be successful and develops confidence. It also works well for improving and correcting any issues of older and more experienced dogs. At AC Gundogs, there are two lanes, one with and one without obstacles. There are many benefits to using a retrieval lane in training, including -

🐾 Giving the dog a clear path to the retrieve so they know where they need to go.

🐾 Limiting where they can go on return, encouraging better delivery.

🐾 Reduces distractions from the environment, helping the dog focus on the task.

🐾 Supports the practice of straight lines to improve accuracy when directed.

Our 2025 gundog training holiday dates are now open to bookings...

This year both the intermediate and advanced level holidays have been split into retrievers and spaniels.

I am also very excited to announce that Gemma, who many of you will know as one of our very skilled and knowledgeable assistants, will be heading up some of our novice and intermediate spaniel holidays in 2025.

Gemma has her own training business in the New Forest and grew up on a shoot so has plenty of experience teaching as well as training and working gundogs.

Training is from £105-£115 per day, with accommodation ranging from £50 per night to £127 per night.

To book, please DM me. I like to ensure that your gundog will be at the right level for the planned training activities on the holiday of your choice. I'll either send you a booking link, or suggest another holiday which might be more suited to your level.
