UPDATE

Marius has reached a whopping 713g and has gone to his lovely, very hedgehog friendly, home. He is a huge character and I miss hearing him throw his empty food bowl around to attract a refill!

Rochelle has moved out to the aviary. Rochelle is not happy about this and seems to think she is a tragic victim who has been Very Hard Done By. Every time we pass the aviary she is pointing out that she should probably be in the house, tough luck Rochelle - time to learn how to be a bird with Bug & Peeper! 😂

UPDATE

Marius is now a lovely 554g hog and will be ready to go soon - once we know we’ve got a good period of mild weather. For now he is eating well and showing no signs of stress.

Rochelle is starting to feed herself, it’s not entirely successful yet and she does try to eat her feet occasionally. Once her success rate is higher she’ll be going out to the aviary where Bug, Peeper & Ronnie will show her how to be a bird.

ROCHELLE

Rochelle is a late baby, the nest was on a roof which collapsed and with no sign of the parent bird, it’s time to hand-rear.

3 crop feeds down and in a lovely snuggly nest, she seems content and is interested in her new surroundings.

MARIUS

Marius is doing well. He’s gained 150g so now weighs 300g. Still got a way to go but he’s coping well and showing no signs of stress. He’s such a handsome hog!

MARIUS

Marius was out in the day, not moving with purpose and so was brought in. He weighs 146g and had some ticks but no fleas. Ticks have been removed, fluids given and he’s on a heat pad. I’ll check a poo sample when he provides one…

💖 bug

For those of you who remember the littlestone flat renovation pigeons we saved..... Bug was one of those, but she was born with a deformed leg. We wanted her to be big and strong enough for an anesthetic and leg amputation, and she had it done today!! She has taken it all in her ( one legged ) stride , and seems to be doing very well so far!! I can't express what a happy bird she is. If she does well on her leg she will be released, I'm a little conscious it's so close to winter so it may be she stays until spring. Time will tell, but she is strong and deserves the very best!
Thank you to my amazing friend and vet who performed the surgery and gave bug the chance for a better life! 💖 There are still people in the vet industry who care for our wildlife 🥳

If anyone is able to help with a hedgehog who is on Littlestone Greens - hopefully will have a more accurate location - and pick it up for us we’d be very grateful.

NIBBLER

Outer lovely little Nibbler has finished her rehabilitation and made an amazing recovery from her amputation. Today her finders came to collect her and have taken her back to their secure garden where she has a luxury hog house waiting for her. As she is missing a limb she needs a secured garden so that the family can keep an eye on her.

All of the creatures that come through leave an imprint on us but some are super special; Nibbler is one of those. Nothing has got her down, she is active, cheeky, eats like a horse and I already miss her!

GRAPHIC IMAGE WARNING

This poor bird was attacked by a sparrowhawk and had a very nasty wound at the top of his leg.

A few days cage rest having the wound treated and pain meds and he’s now gone out to the aviary to complete his rehabilitation.

JEM

Jem was released yesterday, he’s gone to a fantastic rural area where he has already made himself at home under a summer house. He weighed a very healthy 880g when he went.

This pigeon arrived very subdued with a nasty eye injury. It was cleaned and the eye is intact but he couldn’t open it.
He’s been having it bathed daily - amazingly tolerant - and has been having anti-inflammatory meds, today he has it half open.
He’s much brighter in himself too and is interacting more with the other two aviary residents.

NIBBLER

Nibbler has done so well after her surgery, her remaining back leg had also been broken but she uses it and is remarkably speedy when given the opportunity. You can see her using it towards the end of the video.
She’s an enthusiastic eater and has also put on over 100g.
Her new accommodation has been built and is absolutely brilliant - a hog house built into a log pile - and the garden is completely secure so that she can be supported.

DILL

Dill has a nasty puncture wound on his side. He’s a hefty 965g and has no external parasites so is generally a healthy hog. Will check a 💩 sample when he provides on but for now he’s had the wound cleaned, pain relief and has started antibiotics.

WHAT IS AN AUTUMN JUVENILE? Autumn juvenile hedgehogs are old enough to be away from their mothers but too small to hibernate successfully. The autumn juvenile season can start as early as September and is busy through until the end of November. However, some will struggle on and the occasional one....

SPIKE

Spike has been making some questionable life choices - out in the day getting under the feet of a retired dairy cow and a sturdy pony and then getting wedged under the edge of a cattery pen. He is incredibly skinny.
Awaiting a poo sample to check for nasties but he’s now safe and warm & has had some fluids.

NIBBLER

This little hog had an open fracture to her right hind leg. She is feisty and active in spite of that so today was booked in to have the leg amputated. Her pre-op check revealed that her other rear leg had been broken also and hasn’t set correctly but, given that she is getting around really well, the amputation went ahead.
She is already moving around and eating. She’s lost a little weight - obviously - and is now 308g.
Nibbler will be released to a secure garden for supported living when the time is right.
