With the night drawing in, we are getting closer and closer to bonfire night. 🔥🎆🎇This can be a worrying time for pet owners. We have put together some tips and tricks to try and help you and your pets during this time. ✨🐾
🐭🐹🐀 These tips are for owners of small furries and outdoor animals 🐰🦆🐓
🐁🐀🐹🐭
Small furries that live inside
✨ Give your little one extra bedding around firework season for them to burrow into, or cardboard boxes or tubes with multiple exits and entrances.
✨ Play music to drown out the bangs of fireworks.
✨Leave the lights on, to hide the sudden flashes.
✨ Keep them occupied with toys.
✨ Keep bonded pairs together.
🐓🦆🐰
Animals that may live outdoor, like guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens, etc.
✨ If possible, bring your animals hutch inside to a quiet room in the house. A garage or shed would be a good alternative if you can't bring the hutch inside.
✨ If you can't bring your pets inside at all, then you can try covering their hutch with a thick blanket (ensure that there is ventilation) or turning their enclosure around to face a wall or fence. This will block out flashes of light and stifle loud bangs.
✨Keep bonded animals together.
✨ For chickens, you can try placing a battery powered radio in the coop, this probably wont mask the noise but will provide some reassurance to your hens.
☎️ Phone the vet if you are worried about your pet at all! ☎️

🐱 These tips are for the owners of cats 🐱
✨ Create a safe space - if your cat has a usual hiding/sleeping spot, make sure they have access to this and encourage them with toys and treats.
✨Let them hide - don't try to coax your cat out of their hiding space.
✨Escape proof your house - block cat flaps, close all windows and doors. Cats are great at squeezing through small spaces so be aware of this when escape proofing.
✨Block out bangs and flashes - close doors, windows and curtains. Also put on the tv or the radio to drown out the noises in the background.
✨Avoid picking them up - picking them up can increase stress levels and provoke sudden aggression.
✨ Pheromone diffusers - having some diffusers of pet pheromones around the house, as these may help promote calmness in your cat.
✨ Make sure your cats microchip is up to date - if they do manage to flee, this is a great way for them to be recognised and returned to you.
✨ Don't leave them alone - if you do leave them alone, do not be upset with them if they toilet outside the litter tray. If there is any dramatic changing in the toileting like straining to pass urine, blood in urine, or lots of trips to the litter tray then please phone your vet as soon as possible.
✨ Talk to the vet if your cat gets very stressed with firework season, the vet can give them a health check, medicine to help, or refer them to a pet behaviourist.

🐶 These tips are for the owners of dogs 🐶
✨ Distract them - keep your pup distracted with puzzle feeders, toys, and activities.
✨ Provide a safe space - make a cosy den for them and make it a positive place with toys and treats on the lead up to bonfire night.
✨ Walk them earlier in the day to avoid taking them out during a firework display, if this is not possible, keep them on lead at all times. Make sure their chip details are up to date too!

✨ Talk to the vet - if you find your dog gets very distressed during the firework season, please do not hesitate to speak to one of our vets. They can check for health conditions, give medications to help, and refer your dog to a behaviourist if needed.

Did you know that we’re one of the few vets in the area to offer keyhole surgery?
We like to stay ahead of the game to provide the best care for our beloved pets. That's why we’ve invested in the equipment and training to offer keyhole surgery for neutering. When done in this way our patients have a lot less pain as the procedure is much less invasive, ensuring your pet's comfort and a quicker recovery.
Find out more at: https://bit.ly/3wdB0xZ or talk to one of our staff members to learn more about the benefits of laparoscopic spay surgery and why it's the best choice for your furry friend.

We thought that we would put up a wee video with instructions on how to brush your dog's teeth. 🦷🪥
If you have had your pet come to the surgery for dental treatment or a check of their teeth you may have been told by our nurse or vet, that brushing teeth is a great way to keep gums and teeth healthy and fight gum disease.
And then you may of thought 'How the heck am I supposed to do that?'🤔 Well, we managed to convince Renn to take part in 'A Step by Step Guide to Brushing Your Dogs Teeth' and all he wanted in return was a pigs ear!! 🐷
Changes to Prescribing Rules
‼ CHANGES TO PRESCRIBING GUIDELINES ‼
As some of you will be aware, the RCVS have brought into effect new prescribing guidelines for Veterinary Surgeons. These guidelines become official from Friday 12 January 2024 and applied to Veterinary prescription only medications. These changes have been brought in to help tackle antibiotic resistance, reduce the environmental impact of some medications and to support us with safe prescribing.
We have been working in practice since being made aware of these changes to reduce the impact on our clients as much as we possibly can and for most of you this has hopefully meant no to minimal disruption to your usual services. However, some of you may have noticed a change in our ability to prescribe some medications, particularly anti-parasiticides, and we ask for your understanding while we work to adhere to these new guidelines.
From Friday 12 January 2024, anti-parasiticides (flea, tick and wormer medications) will be in the same category as antibiotics/ antimicrobials and controlled drugs. This means that we will need to see your pet in-person and form a prescription before these medications can be dispensed. Please be aware that these prescriptions will be for specific named drugs therefore if your pet required a change in medication before their “prescription ran out” then they would require a further appointment for the new prescription to be generated.
We kindly ask for you to be mindful that these changes have been mandated by the RCVS and to be courteous to our staff when communicating with them. If you have any questions regarding the new guidelines, then please do not hesitate to get in touch.
As always, our clients and their pets remain our priority and we will help you as best we can whilst adhering to the new guidelines.
Things you can do to help us, help you:
1. Give us at least 48 hours’ notice when ordering repeat medications, including flea, tick and wormer medications.
2. If your pet h
