⚠️ Warning serious itch alert ⚠️

This was all taken out of some kittens ears. You can see the dark colour of the wax and dirt and then the mites are the white dots moving around.

If you see your pet scratching a lot at its ears, you might want to consider these little pests!

Here is Imogen bandaging our very patient Labrador friend, we use it as a training aid for our students. During its life it has had numerous injured limbs, cut ears and more positioning for X-rays than you could imagine.

The only issue is that we have realised it has no name!!! Comment below for suggestions!

It’s the season of the grass!
Remember to check your animals ears, paws, coats when you get in from a walk. If you see your pet shaking its head a lot, licking a lot at a certain area keep in mind it could be a grass seed.

It’s rabbit awareness week let’s talk teeth. Rabbit dental disease is a common problem in pet rabbits. In the picture you can see one of our vets performing a dental procedure under general anaesthetic to remove some overgrown back teeth.

Here are some handy tips for recognising and avoiding dental issues:

🦷Overgrown and misaligned teeth are most commonly due to being fed a diet too low in fibre so have a good quality hay available for them at all times.

🦷Avoid feeding too many sugary treats and foods that are naturally high in sugar such as apples and carrots.

🦷Gently check and feel your rabbits face regularly, checking for lumps, bumps and sensitivity.

🦷 Be aware that there are numerous signs that your rabbit could be suffering with dental problems, these are the most common: drooling, weight loss, grinding of teeth, behavioural changes, weepy eyes, facial swelling, diarrhoea.

🦷Remember to book your rabbit an appointment with one of our team if you want your rabbits teeth checking.

It’s rabbit awareness week! With this heat we are experiencing let’s chat about flystrike.

⚠️Yucky post alert⚠️

Flystrike can occur year round, but is most common in warm weather. It happens when flies lay eggs on a rabbit, the maggots hatch and start eating the rabbits flesh. Unfortunately it is a condition that can prove fatal within 24 hours.

How to help prevent it:

🐰 Cleanliness of the environment, regular cleaning of the hutch to prevent attracting flies.

🐰 Check your rabbit at least once daily around its bottom but ideally twice daily in the heat.

🐰Be aware that rabbits can get arthritis as they grow older so may not be as nimble at cleaning their bottoms, this can mean you may have to regularly groom and bathe the back end to avoid attracting flies.

🐰Feed a healthy diet to ensure that your rabbit produces the right consistency of droppings (not sticky poo that clings to its bum!).

🐰Feeding the correct diet also ensures a healthy overall weight of your rabbit, meaning it is not too overweight to get to its bottom to groom itself.

🐰Be extra vigilant if your rabbit has an open wound.

🐰Purchase a good quality rabbit specific fly repellent.

🐰Flystrike is classed as an emergency so book a vet appointment ASAP if you suspect your rabbit has it.
