A few enquiries lately…. I’m quiet on this page due to being insanely busy @ Cragside Equestrian Centre & Riding School. I still coach freelance but you are encouraged to travel to me. 🙂

A little update from us……

Unless you know me personally then you will know…..

Since, hauling my life up north to replace my yard with just coaching and having more free time (which I didn’t seem to have, that bit got lost) anyway….

It is with great excitement that I share that I now run Cragside Riding school in Hexham Northumberland.

I stepped in as a coach there, not too far off 18 months ago now to help them and gradually taken over the reins bit by bit. I can’t say it’s similar in anyway to running a competition livery yard and the paperwork that is involved 🙈 wow!

Anyway, the transfer is going very smoothly and I’m open for riding lessons on our school horses as well as providing my usual services for coaching and riding and judging.

We have great facilities, and activities from summer camps (you can borrow a horse or bring your own), holiday hacking and all sorts.

So we have a collaboration of business’ so feel free to check us, book a lesson on our horses or your own and even come for a holiday 😉

It’s not often I do this however today I’m making an adult decision. 🙈

Due to the road works around Leeds, that have been continuously lengthening my journey time by up to 2 hours one direction ….. I will be postponing my fortnightly clinics until the work is completed.

This way I’m limiting my own frustrations but also disappointment for yourselves when I’m not meeting the time arranged and appointments having to be re scheduled.

Hopefully it will only be for a few sessions. I am however available for video sessions, advice and support as normal

It’s been a long busy few weeks but I finally managed to get over to see my lovely sponsored rider today. She asked to do some jumping. I think it’s safe to say Chief had some scope. Lots of homework in place before the next one.

Today…. I didn’t have a good ride.

Ghost has been pushed out for others, work and children. He’s had some time off. I boxed him up and went to use an arena.

There was a lot going on. His adrenalin was high and his confidence was low. He was physically trembling at things and struggled to leave the car park. I had to get off to get him to the arena.

I lead him round before hopping back on. He tried so hard to let me in, but every time he did something caused him to shrink back in to himself so we started again.

Ghost has a warm up routine. If the adrenalin is up, we trot it out, however I’ve started encouraging him to walk a bit longer, to take that deep breath. Today he tried but every time those lungs expanded something made him lose his confidence and shrink and tremble. So we spent so much time walking and trotting on a circle not asking for anything else bar a rhythm and to stay on my line.

Today, we repeated our warm up plan may be 20 times. He would let me in and then lose confidence. So we went back to the beginning and started again and again and again. We did develop up to canter at one point and then we started again.

I would love to say his confidence grew and that by the end of it we were busting some moves and gliding around the arena but with babies that isn’t the case.

Ghost is now back in his stable, taking that deep breath. Hopefully, realising that nothing ate him, nothing went wrong and he is still in fact alive. He will absorb that there was no pressure from me, I held his hand, gently persuaded him to let me in, even though he wouldn’t allow me to stay there. And then we would repeat that process. Each time we lost it, I started again.

Today he needed me to hold his hand and understand. The usual connection we share wasn’t strong in the way of how we were going but it did show in how much he trusted me to continue to try his hardest to be brave and to keep trying. To keep pushing his comfort zone even though we did need to keep creeping back in to it to constantly build that confidence. As a team he needed me to have his back today.

Today, was a massive education hurdle that he will think about and learn from and come out more confident and more brave without thinking that even when he is literally trying to be invisible there was no pressure added from his rider to what the environment was already upsetting.

So today I didn’t have a ‘good’ ride. I didn’t have a bad ride. I had a ride that will make the building blocks stronger. Allow him to grow in confidence and develop from. So I ask myself again, was it honestly not a ‘good’ ride.

As a coach, as a rider, as a judge and as a person I applaud quietness.

Now I don’t mean what you are thinking…..

I mean those noisey people that always pass comment. Yes noisey…. Not nosey. Noisey people are the bane of my life.

Last week I was at a show, I watched a young girl struggling to get her horse around a 60/70cm. Yes the horse discovered it could be cheeky and many of us could have sorted this out very quickly but it was a new partnership and the rider was finding her feet and over coming different issues herself individually and as a partnership with this new horse that had previously been going around 1.10m. They have a journey ahead of them to take and they don’t need to hear the viewers comment on how they can do better. No one knew their story… I learnt the above as I asked the rider as she was so demoralised and had no answers to what was going on, I offered some guidance.

A number of years ago someone I know bought a very spooky young horse that tested her nerves to the limit. I silently followed their story on Facebook and they had so many obstacles to over come but they got there but not without those people who continuously passed judgement and comment about how they could do better without knowing how far they had come from which constantly brought her down and made her question herself.

I’ve sold many horses that haven’t followed the path I had set out for them, new riders and owners that face their own hurdles and problems arise that weren’t there with me. I don’t judge I help. From horse that jumped the moon to not jumping a thing in their new home, to horse who could take the winter champs title but couldn’t get round the outside of an arena with their new person.

Many years back I rode a very quirky horse for my sister that eventually got sold. We went to see her and my sister was very upset with how she looked. She wasn’t the big stonking warmblood athlete we had parted with but after hearing the story of navicular and falls that had happened she was loving life as a semi retired hack/schooling horse not the show jumper we passed on. Her condition reflected that but she wasn’t not looked after.

Every horse, rider, owner etc has their own story, their own path they have walked whether good or bad and their journey ahead still to take.

Just because you once new, think you know or whatever…. I can tell you now….. you don’t! Sit back, shut up and mind your own business.

Stop being noisey!

The horse world is small, it’s expensive and it’s bloody hard work! Stop being jealous, stop putting others down for any reason, stop thinking you know best. Everyone it’s not so hard.

This….. this muddy wet chestnut pony has put the biggest smile on my face today. Had a great outing on Monday, first time indoors and first time seeing boards and she took it all in her stride. Today she was a superstar with the farrier. She’s starting to grow up to make her owners proud. I’m privileged to be working with such a horse.

With the increasing costs of life, more the immediate ones, I am doing my best to not have to increase my charges.

If you are finding yourself in any hard positions, I understand having coaching sessions is a luxury, but also it can be very important to some individuals state of mind, I’m here to speak to.

I have a few clients that would always be up for a lesson share or arena share to help balance costs out or even just to come and ride with me and have an eye over what’s going on rather than a lesson. You only have to ask!

Keep yourselves motivated and in a good place.
