Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome or BOAS
BOAS effects Brachycephalic breeds, these breeds usually have very short noses, compressed skull and narrow airways.
Some breeds affected include: French Bulldogs, Pugs, English Bulldogs, Boston Terriers and Shih Zu's
Clinical Signs:
🩺Breathing difficulties
🩺Reduced exercise intolerance
🩺Noise when breathing
🩺Regurgitation
🩺Sleeping disorders
There is no cure for BOAS, but with management like weight loss and surgery we can
help alleviate the symptoms like, the ability to breathe better and an improved quality of life.
Surgery includes removing excess soft tissue from the airways, with a combination of widening the nostrils, shortening the soft palate and removing the tonsils depending on the severity of BOAS.

Happy Rabbit Awareness Week! If you have any rabbits be sure to send us a picture of their lovely faces!
🦷🐰Rabbit Dental Disease🐰🦷
Rabbits teeth grow continuously throughout their life so it's important to know about them!
Rabbits teeth are worn down by chewing, if the teeth do not properly align, issues like spurs (sharps points on the teeth) can lead to abscesses.
Clinical signs:
❗️Not eating properly or at all
❗️Weepy eye/s
Treatment:
🩺Anaesthetic for dental work
Prevention:
✅Grass and hay - TOP TIP 🌾grass and hay should make up 85% of a rabbits diet🌾it contains a special fibre called 'long fibre' which helps wear down the teeth as it needs to be chewed side to side.
✅Regular vet checks - vets can check your rabbits teeth in an appointment with an otoscope which allows them to see the teeth at the back for your rabbits mouth.
If want to get your rabbits teeth checked, call us to book an appointment with one of our vets📞
Happy Fur-ther's Day! Let's see some photos of all the pet dads out there!
🐰☀️Summer = Flystrike☀️🐰
Flystrike can affect any rabbit at any time and is a veterinary emergency.
Flystrike is caused by flies laying eggs on your rabbits fur and hatching into maggots🪰
This can happen for a number of reasons:
☀️Time of year - more common in summer but can happen anytime
❗️Rabbits with a dirty bottom - dirty fur attracts flies and can happen due to poor diet or arthritis
🩹Wounds - rabbits with wounds also attract flies
Prevention:
✅Check your rabbit over daily
✅Keep their environment clean
✅Give the correct diet
✅Apply Rearguard by veterinary recommendation
It's turning into BBQ season! We hope you have a fun but safe time with your furry friends making burgers!

Meet our Head Nurse and Clinical Supervisor!
Hi, my name’s Louise and I’m head nurse here at GKG. I qualified as a veterinary nurse back in 2012 and I have been fortunate to work in some incredible places, with incredible people and animals over the years. I started at GKG in January and I have loved getting to know our regulars and chatting to their lovely owners. I have so many favourite patients already and I have a particular soft spot for our geriatric patients ❤️
My favourite part of being a veterinary nurse is quite simply helping you, help your companions to live a happy, long and healthy life!

🩺Nurse sick patients
🩺Inhouse lab testing
🩺Perform diagnostic imaging
🩺Perform some minor surgeries
🩺Reception duties
And much much more!

📣CALLING ALL CAT OWNERS📣
As of 10th June 2024 it will be a legal requirement for your cat to be microchipped.
Pet Health Club clients get microchipping included in the plan!
It’s estimated 1.2 million cats enter an animal shelter every year - microchipping your cat means they can be reunited with you if they ever went missing.
Make sure your microchip details are updated if you move house, change phone number or name so you can be easily contacted.

When walking your dog in the dark, make sure that both you and your dog are visible to others. For owners, this means avoiding dark clothing and wearing reflective safety gear such as a vest, strap or wristband. There are several options for keeping your dog visible in the dark, such as a reflective dog jacket, collar, lead, harness or even an LED light-up safety necklace. Dogs with darker fur are more difficult to see in the dark. However, even if you have a lighter coloured dog, you should make sure your dog can be seen in the dark.
As an International Cat Care Cat Friendly Practice we love cats in all colours at GKG Vets. Follow our page for top tips and Healthcare information for your cat.
On Armed Forces Day we remember all the animals who are part of our armed forces and the humans who care for them.
