Pebble the Cavapoo visited us this week for a dental procedure performed by Vet Siana. Pebble was a little nervous at the start of the day but he settled in to his kennel no problem and was an absolute sweetheart 🐾🥰

Siana used an ultrasonic scaler to remove plaque, tartar and stains from his teeth. After probing of the teeth, a few were identified as diseased and needed extraction. Pebble had a total of 4 teeth removed but as you can see, he has plenty left!

🩺 Pebble was under a general anaesthetic for the procedure and was being closely monitored by RVN Lucy. The anaesthetic means thorough cleaning, examination and tooth removal can take place without causing stress and discomfort.

🦷 We always recommend brushing your dogs teeth every day as the best way to prevent plaque and tartar build up.

We could do a guess the foreign body post...but this one might be too easy! This pooch visited us a couple of weeks ago, feeling unwell and after taking an x-ray of his abdomen it was immediately obvious what the problem was. Our Vet Katie performed surgery and succesfully retrieved the foreign object along with some other treasures that didn't appear on the x-ray. It's definitely a reminder that some dogs will eat almost anything! Thank you to his owners for letting us share his story 🐾

🐍 Adders 🐍

As the weather begins to warm, we have noticed an increase in calls regarding adder bites.

The adder (Vipera berus berus) is the only venomous snake native to the UK, and is also found across northern Europe. It is a protected species in the UK. Adders are most commonly, but not exclusively, found on dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands and woodland edges. The clinical signs of an adder bite can include rapid and progressive swelling around the bite site, pain, lethargy, vomiting, bruising, bleeding and collapse.

What should you do if your pet has been bitten by an adder?
❌Do not panic.
❌Do not interfere with the bite.
❌Do not apply a tourniquet.
❌Do not attempt to touch or catch the snake.
❌Do not kill the snake – it is a protected species.
❌If practical, carry your dog to your car and go to your veterinary surgeon - do not delay seeking advice even if your pet is well as things can change quickly.

Adders are not aggressive and generally only bite when provoked. They hibernate in the winter and as a result most bites occur in the summer. Pets are frequently bitten on the leg, head or neck. If your pet has been bitten by an adder (even if you did not see the snake or are not sure what happened) – contact your vet immediately. Your vet will examine your pet to determine the location of the bite and extent of the swelling.

Veterinary professionals can call us any time on 02073 055 055 if required for assistance with managing cases of adder bites. We also hold a list of antivenom stockists across the UK. Please note that antivenom is not indicated in all cases.

🐾 Perseus 🐾
This is Perseus the Giant Schnauzer, pictured with Nursing Assistant Emily. Perseus had a rather long stay with us as he was admitted for emergency surgery on 17th December, he spent a total of 12 nights with us whilst recovering. He is a special boy and of course we are pleased he has now been discharged but the whole team are missing seeing his face in the wards!

Perseus had a mesenteric torsion which is a very serious and often fatal condition. So we are all over the moon that he survived and was able to go home to his owners. This actually isn't the first time Perseus has required life saving surgery. A year ago he had a ruptured stomach ulcer and required emergency surgery and a long stint in the hospital. He's a lucky boy and such a fighter to survive these life-threatening illnesses.

Donnington Grove Veterinary Group

The current practice of Donnington Grove Veterinary Group is thought to have originated in the early 1900s at premises then known as Albion House in Oxford Road, now occupied by an Italian restaurant. After the second world war the practice title was known as 'Addis and Warde' (telephone Newbury 170) and was one of two veterinary practices in Newbury, the other one being situated on the other side of Newbury and known as 'Crawshaws'. The work undertaken by the practice was a good mix of farm, equine and small animal work.

In the 1970s Michael O'Gorman and Chris Blackman joined the partnership and in due course Messrs Addis and Warde retired and the practice became 'Blackman and O'Gorman'. In the early 1980s the partnership developed premises at 78 London Road, Newbury, opposite the Catholic church, to allow space for better small animal facilities. In 1989 Julian Slater and James Main joined the partnership; as the practice expanded the need for further small animal and equine hospitalisation and surgical facilities led to the purchase and development of the current premises in the early 1990s.

With the early retirement of Chris Blackman shortly before the move to Donnington and the addition of further partners later in the decade the partnership adopted its current title.
