🚨 Rawhide dog chews 🚨

Rawhide chews are a popular treat for dogs, particularly around Christmas time but they come with several potential risks:

🐾 Choking Hazard: Large or small pieces of rawhide can break off, posing a choking hazard or leading to blockages in the dog’s digestive tract.

🐾 Digestive Issues: Rawhide can be difficult for some dogs to digest. Swallowed large pieces may cause stomach upset, constipation, or even blockages, requiring urgent medical attention.

🐾 Chemical Exposure: Some rawhides are treated with chemicals during processing, such as bleach or preservatives, which could be harmful to your dog if ingested in large quantities.

🐾 Dental Damage: While rawhide can help with dental cleaning, overly hard or aggressive chewing on rawhide can cause dental fractures or wear down a dog’s teeth over time.

🐾 Allergic Reactions: Some dogs may develop allergic reactions to rawhide, resulting in digestive distress or skin issues.

To minimize risks, it is recommended to steer away from any rawhide treats and choose high-quality, natural products, and consider safer alternatives like rubber or edible dental chews.

Here’s an update on Mojo, the little stray that was brought into us a couple of weeks ago.

Mojos weight has gone up by nearly 4kg! We are so thrilled with his progress.

We are unbelievably thankful to Bulldog Rescue and Rehoming - Charity for dropping everything to come to Mojos rescue. Also to our lovely local dog warden for bringing him to us, to see if we could give him the chance to thrive.

But the real work here has been done by his fosterer, who has kindly opened his home and his heart to Mojo. A true team effort all around

As you can see he’s living his best life… snoozing and not a care in the world 😴

Good luck lil man 🐾 ❤️

Meet lolly (also known as Lollipop, lollens or Wallace) 🐈‍⬛🩷

Lolly belongs to our head nurse Gem.
Gem noticed this pink spot growing on Lolly’s tooth and these little pink lesions are a tell tale sign of a ‘FORL’ (feline odontoclastic resorptive lesion)
FORLs are basically a cavity for cats, but they can be incredibly painful.

Odontoclasts in the mouth attack the root of the tooth and eventually the crown too, leading to these little pink lesions on the tooth. Eventually bone within the jaw fills in the space where the root once was.

We took some X-rays of lolly’s teeth to proper assess the roots below the gumline. We can see that the crown of the tooth is affected (circled in red), but also the periodontal ligament has gone (the black line surrounding the tooth root) which means the root is no longer present.

The only way to treat these pesky lesions is to extract the affected tooth and any remaining root. Unfortunately many, many cats suffer with this condition and there is no definite explanation as to why they occur.

Cats are notorious for hiding their pain well, so it may not always be completely obvious that these little lesions are present, so routine dental checks for your older feline friends is always recommended 🐾 🦷

Today is National Black Cat Awareness Day!

Today we are celebrating all our black feline friends - they are most commonly known for being Halloween symbols, but black cats can be associated with good luck, love, and even money and there history goes all the way back to the Salem witch trials🔮

Fun fact- Cats that were owned by Witches were also known as “familiars”

Do you own a black cat? Or have an interesting fact?🐈‍⬛ show us in our comment section below! 🐾
