At long last we get to event again!! It’s been nearly a year since either myself or Indi have been out eventing, and I’m so grateful to be back at it again. It was an excitable dressage shall we say with 35.3, clear SJ and clear XC with a few seconds over, placing us 6th overall. Indi put all my XC nerves from last year to rest this weekend, I feel so lucky to have such a bold horse 🥹 and to be reminded of how much I love the sport.

What a busy October! My BHS Stage 2 was cancelled in June after breaking my leg, but I finally got to take the assessment and have passed all sections (ride, care, and lunge)! Starting at Newcastle Uni has kept me busy, but most importantly given me the chance to start playing polo 😍. Given all this there hasn’t been much time to compete but I have has some fab dressage lessons with Chrissie, and today my first jumping lesson with James after falling off 🩼. Feeling very lucky to experience all this at the minute ♥️

Absolutely loving looking after the horses again this week. Monty is back home, feeling fit and forward, and I’ve been back on board Indi after her three month holiday 🏝

Excited for the next few weeks building up my fitness, and enjoying riding after so long.

It was fun to visit my bug eyed friend today.
Naturally I am missing riding but finally last
week I was released from my pirate leg and I
have been weight bearing since, so hopefully only a few more weeks to go before I can begin again.

Yesterday I started to do some performance
based physio, imitating rising trot, improving
my leg mobility for mounting, and my balance
whilst turning my upper body.

l am absolutely thrilled with the progression
I've made at Pro Physio Health NE. Darren has
given me so much confidence in my foot, and a through rehab plan to get back to full fitness. It's time to put the hard work in now. 📈😄

I’m definitely making one of these for the horses 🍓🧊

☀How do you help to keep your horse safe, and as comfortable as possible, in hot weather?☀

Follow our simple steps in the web link below, and also be aware of the signs of dehydration, heat stroke / exhaustion.

As shown in the image below, a frozen fruit block can help with enrichment, as it’s similar to a type of lick. As with all fruit and vegetables, ensure your horse has good teeth to chew the pieces.

Where has all the grass gone?...

“But there isn’t any grass on the field…” We hear these words a lot at this time of year, from the exasperated owners of fat horses fighting what sometimes seems like a losing battle with their horses’ weight.

Have you ever wondered why horses on a seemingly bare paddock can still gain weight?
It is worth keeping in mind, the picture of the un-grazed side of the field below. Of course, it can be very difficult for owners to monitor what a horse is taking in, but one thing is certain: when that side of the field is full of horses, it won’t look like this! That grass would be nipped off as soon as it poked up high enough to be nibbled!

Sarah Stoneham BVSc Cert ESM MRCVS gives this very good explanation of the problem which helps us to understand and monitor the amount of grass that the horse is consuming.

“UK grass growth figures (grass check GB) indicate that over the last week (ending 16.5.22), average grass growth in the north west has been high. At the moment a small well-managed paddock, the size of a 40x20m dressage arena will be producing an average of 22.5kg of grass per day. The dry matter content of grass is currently only 20% which means it is 80% water, so a 40x20m area produces 4.5 kg of grass on a dry matter basis each day.
This has a calorie content similar to 4.5 kg of a conditioning hard feed. The grass is also high in sugar, 17.1% on average last week. So, the 4.5 kg of grass on a dry matter basis will contain approximately 770g of sugar!
If your paddock is still looking as bare as it did earlier this year it is because your horse has eaten all the new grass each day.”

So, where has all the grass gone?... its inside the horse!

Sadly no riding for a while … I am almost certain I have messaged all my clients to notify them that I am out of riding work for the next three months minimum. It’s been a busy few days.

Surgery went well, tomorrow a new cast will be plastered on and hopefully it is time for home on Friday🤞🏼

Luckily my fantastic mum is looking after the horses + my liveries and I am forever grateful to her. These next few months will consist of Webinars, Online Courses, Dressage writing, and revision for my BHS Stage Two and Three I suppose 😌

What a brilliant weekend at Richmond. I spent Friday score collecting, darting between dressage, show jumping, and the start box. I’ve learnt so much about how BE runs, met some fantastic people, and seen just how much time and effort goes into one weekend!

Thank you so much for putting on a great event, we certainly did get spoilt 🥰 and it is so nice to give back to the sport that you love.

Indi and I finished on our 37 stressage score today, going double clear 🙌🏻. Due to pulling a shoe last weekend she had most of the week off, therefore I am not surprised by her energy levels💥. Now time to relax watching the Badminton highlights ♥️

Lovely double clear, finishing on our dressage score for 4th place at Breckenbrough BE90 this Saturday 🥳
