Providing pet food is the most important thing when dealing with pets in poverty, full tummies are happy tummies as they say, but we also found that owners enjoy being able to give their pets treats and as our post yesterday stated pet owners spend extra having to get to pet shops, so when we meet people we take a box of treats and some dog coats, leaders and the owners give a donation and the treats are the most popular item taken.

In poverty stricken areas you get what’s called animal resource deserts where there are no pet shops within easy access no groomers etc so simple items like collars and leaders etc are inaccessible so owners have to travel so spending more money adding extra financial burdens. These are all concerns that the more affluent people don’t consider when thinking about pet poverty. We are addressing this lack of knowledge.

The new chancellor has said that the government is committed to reforming planning laws focusing on social housing. Feeling safe and secure is an innate need for any
living creature and pets deserve that security just as much as their owners. 90.000 new homes is the number going round that are social housing homes.
Far too many people and their pets are ending up homeless or are constantly worrying that at the end of the month can they afford their rent or buy food for themselves or their pet, so they go to food banks and use us to feed their pets. Everyone deserves a safe warm place to live, and we are paying attention to this governments commitment to the Renters Reform Bill and that local housing allowances are in line with rents.

A recent survey showed what concerned pet owners the most in the cost of living crisis, and we have contacted the new Government about these concerns. We want a future where pet owners don’t have to choose between feeding themselves, their families or their pets. We would like a guarantee from the new government that the social security system is actually fit for purpose, ensuring that people’s income covers the cost of living.

HMRC failed to pay out Child Benefit to half a million parents and they won’t receive their payments until tomorrow. That’s no food for children, bills that should have been paid, haven’t, Martin Lewis advised people make a complaint in hope they get some bank charges paid back. Pets are at the bottom of the pile in homes struggling.
Government and large departments that deal with people need to put people first and foremost, that is why we lobby for a fair social security system so pets are not forgotten in the struggle for survival.
Please share our page as much as you can. We need to get the message out about pet poverty to everyone.

Today we were asked by a service user for help, she was struggling with the online eligibility form
for the PDSA, she had filled it out once and told she had been accepted but when trying to arrange an appt for her pet the response was by the app that her info couldn’t be found and too fill in the eligibility form again, which she did, waited then tried to make another appt same info the computer could t find her in the system and to fill out an eligibility form, she tried ringing the number given which was just a long beep, in total there are 3 different numbers non are working, we just couldn’t get through at all, so upshot is no appt made for her pet.
Services for people struggling financially are dire even from places that are set up to help such people and their pets.
This was one of the main complaints when we did our resources plan and we are working toward removing barriers so people in poverty are valued and respected.

Good morning everyone, I hope you had a good weekend.
On Friday I had an interview with Newcastle Uni, they were interested in how we started, what keeps us going and what we thought the future held for those struggling with the cost of living crisis.
When I was talking it began to sink in just how desperate the situation is for people, for example people not taking pets for yearly checks due to cost or getting insurance again due to cost.
I think I got the point across about pet poverty.
So if you could get people you know to join this page so we can get this message out to as many people as we can, or point them towards our web page www.cdapetfoofbank.co.uk, i would be very grateful.
Thank you

Building a future where pet owners don’t have to choose between feeding themselves or their pets requires a guarantee from the government that the social security system is fit for purpose. Ensuring that peoples income covers the cost of living while supporting the well being of everyone who needs help, and if owners are supported their pets benefit.

Millions of pets are facing hunger because their owners are on UC and we know it falls short. Pet food banks like ours CDA pet food bank are working so hard to keep pets fed. UC basic rate for a single adult is £91 a week. People shouldn’t be having to make choices whether they keep their pets or give them up. There is a petition which has been handed in calling for politicians to make sure UC protects people and in turn protects their pets.
If you agree share this post with as many people as you can and drive our supporters up so we can get this message out to more and more people.

We received a phone call today from one of our drop off points, about someone in desperate need of help, we were happy to take along this pet food for her. Poverty is a real and dehumanising part of our world just now, our pet food bank cda102 will supply pet food whilst we will make sure the new
Government knows things have to change.
