Are we going home after this, Mom? Back to my window spot where the sun comes in warm?

The table under me is too cold, and it smells strange—like sharp soap and fear. I tuck my paws under me the way I always do when I’m unsure. My tail flicks, though it’s slower these days.

Mom’s eyes are wet again. She’s been leaking water from them a lot lately, and I don’t know why. Every time I rub my face against hers, she holds me close but whispers things I don’t understand.

The woman in blue strokes my fur and calls me “sweet girl.” Her voice is kind, but there’s sadness in it. I’ve heard that sound before—when Grandpa left and didn’t come back.

“Are we going home after this?” I want to ask. Last time they poked me, we did. You gave me tuna and let me sleep on your chest. Your heartbeat was slow and steady under my ear. That’s my favorite sound.

But you don’t answer this time. You press your face into my fur and breathe me in, like you’re trying to keep my scent forever.

The man in the white coat speaks softly. His hands are gentle, rubbing the place between my ears just right. I close my eyes halfway, the way I do when I’m content.

Then you whisper, “It’s time, baby.”

Time for what? A nap? I love naps. Especially in the sun.

The tiny prick in my paw barely hurts. The woman keeps saying I’m a “good girl.” You’re holding my face in both hands, staring at me like I’m your whole world. I want to tell you I was never just a cat. I was your cat.

Warmth floods me. My stiff legs don’t ache anymore. My breathing isn’t heavy. It feels like sunlight is filling me from the inside.

Your tears fall onto my whiskers. I want to lick them away, but my eyes are heavy.

“I love you,” you whisper, and your voice cracks.

I want to tell you:
I loved you every morning when you opened the curtains for me.
I loved you every time you let me steal a piece of chicken from your plate.
I loved you on quiet nights, when it was just you and me and the sound of rain.
I will love you still—even when I’m not here.

The room fades. But suddenly, I’m standing again—tail high, paws strong. I can jump! I can leap like I used to, light as air.

I turn and see… me. Small and curled, still on the table. You’re bent over me, your tears wetting my fur.

I pad closer and rub my head against your cheek. You shiver, like you felt it.

Behind me, there’s light—warm, golden. I hear soft purring from far away, dozens of voices calling me home.

I look at you one last time. You can’t see me now, but I can see you.

I step into the glow, tail flicking in joy. I’m not afraid.

Because I know—one day—you’ll open a door, and I’ll be there waiting. Curled in my sunbeam, ready to purr just for you.

Just to be clear I won’t walk any dog in a high temperature heat, I will always have a lead on , and I am fully insured, also I carry p**p bags , treats, and water with a collapsing bowl so they have access at all times , I’ve noted 33 dogs within a space of a week without water 💦 it’s your pet your family I take full responsibility and they shall be walked when it’s cooler simples 🙃😘
