I hear it all the time, especially ridgebacks.
people say they are stubborn!
I totally disagree. they are however independent thinkers.
They are bred to work without the instruction of people.
They need to be motivated by something other than just your approval.
They don't care.
i have 6 of them and I never think of them as stubborn

I have a larger very strong breed. The Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Gaia here is over 40kg and just at that excitable age.
When they are young and sometimes a bit giddy I do use a headcollar.
you can see the set up here. a double ended lead, one end attached to the head collar and the other to the collar. the reason I do this is so there is very little pressure on the head collar majority of the time.
You can see how comfortable Gaia is with hers.
You also need to spend some time getting your dog/puppy happy with it before attaching a lead.

This very handsome Ridgeback had struggled with reactivity around dogs for a while.
it was becoming increasingly more stressful for him and his owners to go for a walk.
They reached out to me and we got cracking straight away.
with online coaching they made loads of progress so when we met in person they had already done so much.
Now a combination of online support and in person training they are coming in leaps and bounds.
Just staying chilled while dogs walk past is huge, but even more huge is that they are German shepherds. He struggled in particular with this type of dog.
His owners have put the work in, been completely coachable, listening and implementing what I have said and they can see the results.

Unless your dog has a reliable recall they should not be off a lead.
Work on recall away from distractions on a long line until you have nailed it. getting a good emotional response to the recall cue is super critical.
