We nurture the mental and physical wellbeing of adults with learning disabilities by involving them in running a community farm which brings joy and learning to 30,000 local visitors per year. Through structured placements across our bustling farmyard, gardens and visitor centre, they interact with nature and the wider community, helping them to overcome low self-esteem, loneliness and achieve powerful, lasting change in their wellbeing.

We want to take a moment to appreciate one of our lovely and dedicated volunteers, Tim.

Tim has volunteered with us for seven years! He helps look after all of our farm animals, which includes feeding, mucking out, getting the animals in and out of the fields, and many other tasks as they crop up, including collecting Christmas trees, as you can see in this post.

He's currently with us three days a week, on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. His favourite animals, if he *had* to choose, are Willow the cow and the ducks. As you can see in the first photo here, Tim is quite the Duck Whisperer.

Tim told us that he really enjoys working with our staff, particularly Richie and Karl. He also thinks Sarah, our Volunteer Coordinator, is great and very supportive of volunteers to ensure they get the most out of their time with us.

Thank you so much Tim!⭐️

Spring is finally here! That means the arrival of some lambs to the farm. 🐑

These orphan lambs come from Northumberland farms and require milk feeds five times a day, so we need your help to look after them!

Over the Easter Holiday period we will be offering lots of standard Lamb Feeding sessions, as well as:

🌄 Dawn Feeding - special 6am morning feed sessions. What better way to start your day?

🌘 Twilight Feeding - the last feed of the day at 8.30pm before the lambs snuggle down for sleep.

👭 Lamb Feeding for Grown Ups - because why should the kids have all the fun?!

✏️ Lamb Feeding and Drawing - for Families and Adults

📣 Important Lamb Feeding information 📣

Lamb feeding is suitable for children to do on their own if they are age five+. Each child attending needs their own ticket. If you have a child younger than five, please buy a ticket for yourself and your child so that you can accompany them into the lamb pen.

Please note that this event involves close contact with lambs. If you have an allergy to wool, lanolin, hay or straw, or you are pregnant, please do not attend.

Find full details of all the Lamb Feeding sessions here: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/ouseburnfarmcharityltd

Our other Easter Holiday activities such as Small Animal Workshops and Blossom events will be announced soon!

As always, general entry to the farm is completely free, but donations to the farm are gratefully received. 🙏

We currently have a beautiful selection of photos on display in our events space by one of our volunteers, nature photographer Paul Danher .

This exhibition is part of the first anniversary celebrations of 's Wild Ouseburn project.

The Wild Ouseburn community rewilding project, established in January 2024, explores, records, and celebrates the wildlife of the Lower Ouseburn Valley. The wildlife featured here was photographed throughout 2024 near Ouseburn Farm in the Lower Ouseburn Valley.

Paul says, "to me, Wild Ouseburn is about the community's love for the valley and all the wildlife in it. A community made-up of a wide variety of people from all sorts of backgrounds with all sorts of knowledge, all happy to share and help each other. A community that wants nothing more but to help the wildlife of the valley and region.

Wild Ouseburn has taught me so much about all the British wildlife that we have here on our doorsteps and how, with a bit of love and effort, we can achieve amazing things."

Come and see the exhibition until 6th April.

New baby rabbit alert! 🐰

Yes, these might look like fully grown rabbits but actually they are nine week old Giant French Lops, so they are indeed babies. Judging by the size of their back feet, they will get to be a good size! Both are boys are both are absolutely adorable and have been preventing us from getting much done in the office in the last week.

They look forward to meeting all of you soon when you come to visit!

On Thursday 20th February, we’re delighted to welcome composting specialist Andrew Davenport for a revealing and inspirational insight into the essence of good composting, brought to within reach of us all.

This free talk is part of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series, hosted by us in our events space and run by and , as part of the Wild Ouseburn project.

ABOUT THE TALK

Join us for our February Ouseburn Wild Talk: Composting Made Easy For All, with Andrew Davenport, author of the book ‘Quick Return Compost Making’.

Andrew will draw upon his wealth of experience as an organic nurseryman, organic gardener and leading expert on the ‘Quick Return’ (QR) Composting method. We will explore the fundamental basics of composting alongside Andrew’s own ideas, developments and innovations that ensure successful composting in a range of different types and sizes of gardens – overcoming the difficulties that may arise and often deter gardeners from this absolutely essential activity.

Andrew will cover different types of composting (including the QR method) involving many types of waste – from kitchen and garden waste through to wormeries, chicken-assisted composting and composting toilets. Thinking of himself primarily as a composter, Andrew believes from his experiences that a successful organic garden follows on from successful composting.

He will explain how to simplify, speed up and make things easier so that composting can become not only an enjoyable and rewarding hobby in itself, but an essential tool in building and sustaining healthy living soils and improving biodiversity and ecosystems.

Andrew will be joined by our very own gardener Karl, who will share how and what the Farm are composting right here in the Ouseburn Valley!

Wild Ouseburn Talks are a welcoming place for everyone to come and discover all things wild. Talks are free and open for all to attend. Please RSVP via for your free place(s), you will be sent a reminder email a couple of days before the event.

DATE & TIME:

Thursday 20th February 2025. 6.30pm start – please arrive from 6.15pm to find a seat. We’ll finish at around 7.45pm.

We were very sad to lose Bruce, our lovely Bearded Dragon recently, after a short illness. We also learned whilst Bruce was at the vets that he was actually a she!

Bruce was a real character at the farm. She enjoyed being bathed by Emma, our Small Animals Worker, our Placements and children in the school holidays. She was also an excellent poser for photos and the odd drawing session, where her likeness was captured for ever more. Scroll through to see some lovely claw prints that the vets took for us to keep. 🐾

Do you have any memories of Bruce you would like to share?

We want to say a huge thank you to National Lottery Awards for All for their generous funding of our PALS (Personal and Life Skills) programme for adults with learning disabilities, until 2026.

This is a rolling 6 week programme which serves as a confidence-building course for adults with learning disabilities who need extra support to transition into our main Placement Programme, or for those who are totally new to the farm.

This term so far we have been focusing on healthy seasonal ingredients and encouraging social skills by making and then eating a meal together as a group, and mindful painting for wellbeing. We've also been learning about animal care, bathing Doris the tortoise, and walking our goats to their paddock.

PALS is a free course free and helps to:

● Introduce those with additional needs to the farm
● Build relationships and social interaction
● Experience personal achievement and build resilience and confidence
● Understand and develop physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing
● Participate in a wide range of activities which promote a healthy lifestyle
● To take part in physical activity and healthy cooking
● To learn basic numeracy and literacy skills
● Learn about where to find help and resources to inform choices
● To feel a sense of independence and purpose
● To provide an opportunity to participate in community activities
● To have the same access to resources in the community as everyone else
● To be included in society and the communities in which they live

If you know anyone who might like to join our next block after half term, please get in touch with [email protected].

Our Story...

In case you're not entirely sure what we are, we’re a farm! But you won’t find us in the countryside. We're based right in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne. We've also got a lovely cafe serving delightful food, and wherever possible we utilise ingredients from the farm itself.

Ouseburn Farm is a local visitor attraction that’s supported by generous donations from people like you. We’re run by dedicated staff and volunteers for the benefit of the community and the environment. We’re a ‘working farm’ as well as a training and education centre. We’re not your typical farm, so you could say we’re a pretty unusual day out in town for all the family.

Our staff and volunteers create a friendly, positive and nourishing environment where everyone feels welcome and valued.

We genuinely want to make a lasting difference to people's lives; not just because doing good feels good, but because it's the right thing to do.
