This is the face of someone's unwanted Christmas present ⤵️

10-week-old Border Collie puppy, Nanna, arrived at RSPCA Sussex West Branch last week after being purchased as a Christmas present for a family member.

While she won't be spending her first Christmas with a forever family, thankfully she has a loving foster carer looking after her until she's ready to start her search for a permanent place to call home.

Choosing to have a pet isn't a decision to be taken lightly, and isn't a decision which should be made on behalf of others.

We urge you to refrain from gifting animals to family and friends as Christmas presents and only choosing to rehome an animal if you are prepared for the long-term commitment.

Please share Nanna's story to raise awareness 🔄

Wishing all of my customers a lovely Christmas & best wishes for 2025 🎅🏼🥂

❌AT CHRISTMAS YOUR DOG DOESN’T HAVE TO:

🧑‍🎄 Visit Santa at the garden centre

🎄 Be around your visitors

🎅🏽 Go to other peoples houses

🎄 Go to see the Christmas lights switch on

🍺 Go to the busy pub on Christmas Eve

If they are anxious or get worried about people, dogs or busy places or if they just don’t like doing these things. It’s not a fault if they don’t like doing these things, many dogs don’t enjoy ‘human activities’ like this (some do, I have one that loves all of it and two that would be 🫤 ).

✅ Instead they may prefer to:

🚪 Be in their safe space (see upcoming post on this), a quiet room they like being in with a dog gate on the doorway when you have a house full of people who may scare them

🐕 Have an extra trip to a freedom field on Christmas morning and some extra enrichment at home while you go and visit family for a few hours if they’d find it stressful to come with you

🐶 A meet up with a dog or human friend at a place they like rather than a trip to the heaving pub on Christmas Eve

🦴 A trip to a dog enrichment centre or a 121 in an activity they love (scent work, mantrailing etc) rather than an outing to see the Christmas lights switched on

🍖 Some dog safe Christmas biscuits you’ve made them rather than dressing up in a dog Santa outfit

Loads of these Christmas ‘traditions’ that we enjoy are not enjoyed by our dogs, especially if they are anxious or more sensitive. Even the most robust dog may tolerate these activities rather than love them.

Please be mindful of your dogs wants and needs and don’t put them into situations they find stressful just because we want them to be part of Christmas. It’s your Christmas, not your dogs, they really won’t mind not being included in everything you do ❤️

As for the other animal we’d like to highlight on national adoption day, meet Archie, an 8 year old lurcher who has been with us since August.

Despite a couple of appeals now, Archie still somehow hasn’t had a single application form ☹.

We think this is because lurchers and greyhounds tend to be misunderstood. People tend to see these dogs as ones with boundless energy and ones that need constant exercise. When in reality, this couldn’t be further from the truth! Greyhounds and Lurchers are more than happy to snooze on the sofa for hours at a time and don’t require as much exercise as other breeds.

This doesn’t mean that they don’t enjoy adventures, they are also more than happy to go on longer walks, but it just means that they are relatively low maintenance.

Archie himself is a very affectionate boy who charms everybody he meets, we’re sure there’ll be some people in the comments who can vouch for him!

If you’re considering rescuing a dog, we urge you to consider Archie.

Read more and apply today here: https://buff.ly/4fCtkHB

Once again, if you’re not interested in adopting Archie, you can still do your bit by sharing this post so as many people see him as possible!

Hi everyone!

We have been included on the Global Procurement Group's charity donation poll! As part of the festive season, they are giving £2000 to a local charity.

Currently our monthly vet bills are over £10,000, so donations like this are crucial in ensuring that we can continue to provide our animals with the best care possible during their stay with us while we search for their forever home.

Voting closes on Thursday and you can vote for us here: https://buff.ly/4fB1N9m

Let us know in the comments when you've voted!

Thank you :)
