As we approach the big day, we would like to wish all of you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a bubbly New Year in 2024! We are truly grateful for your continued support and loyalty throughout the year and have some exciting new projects to share with you in 2024.

In fact, 2024 is a landmark year for us, so keep an eye on our website and social media for news and announcements to make sure you don't miss out!

All Maidenhead Aquatics stores will be open over the festive period, except for Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Please note that some may also be closed on New Year's Day, so we'd recommend calling the store you plan to visit before leaving home, as some may also be operating on reduced opening hours. Rest assured, however, that all of our fish and livestock will receive special Christmas feeds and water changes and that we'll ensure they're all well and happy over the holidays.

My First Pond Kit

Grazing pod feeders 🐠

Fish will naturally search continuously for food in the wild, the grazing pod feeding simulates this behaviour and encourages fish to hunt for their food by nudging the pod and returning to it as it floats in the aquarium. This means the fish have to work to get their food, resulting in longer feeding and digestion time.

Another advantage is that it ensures all food is eaten before reaching your filter, therefore reducing good wastage and potential water quality issues it may cause.

Everyday is red-nose day for the rummynose tetra 🎈♥️🥰

With today being Red Nose Day, it seemed the perfect time to showcase this sociable little fish with its distinctive red head markings.

Rummynose tetras are naturally found in forest creeks where leaflitter and detritus stain the water dark with tannins. In these soft, acidic blackwater habitats, they swim in large shoals and this sociable nature means that they should be kept in good numbers in the aquarium. Aquatic plants are rare in their natural environment, but dead leaves carpet the ground - most shade and shelter is provided by bankside growth or floating plants. Find out more:

Pet hermit crabs need to be provided with a variety of shells so they can change their shells as needed or when desired 🐚 crabs can be quite picky over which shells they decide to make their new home so providing a variety is ideal.

Botanicals 🍂

Adding botanicals to your aquarium is the best way to mimic nature. Not only will it mimic nature but botanicals release tannins, humic substances and other beneficial compounds to the water.

Botanicals also provide a bio-film (some of you may have seen this when new spider wood has been introduced to your aquarium). Bio-film provides microscopic foods for detritvores, small and challenging fish. It's amazing for fry, Bettas, dwarf cichlids, shrimp and any grazing catfish.

I am so excited to see this range grow, watch this space 👀
