Best take this into consideration when planning your hacking. It mentions a reroute for cyclists but I'm not sure how suitable this would affect horse riders as I can't find a map of it.

Please be advised from Monday 24 February the Derwent Valley Railway Path will be fully closed between Hamsterley Mill and Lintzford Station. This is to allow vegetation removal from Foggoes Burn viaduct.

A road diversion suitable for cyclists will be in place from Hamsterley Mill, re-joining the railway path at Rowlands Gill.

The railway path will be open as normal for all users at weekends throughout the period. The closure will be in place for around four to five weeks.

Just a heads up, this is on in Chopwell woods on Wednesday evening, 5pm - 8.30pm. Not sure of the route but the car park and surrounding area is likely to be busy.

Not long to go until our first PRIDE colour run in the wood 🏳️‍🌈

We’re looking for volunteers to help us throw paint, park cars and make sure the night runs smoothly.

Just a reminder that if you do experience an incident in the woods, please report it to the BHS. Anyone can report their incidents or near misses to the BHS; you don’t have to be a BHS member. Reporting your incidents helps them to better understand the rate of equine-related incidents and near misses across the UK.

Unfortunately there was an incident recently where an out of control dog attacked 2 riders and their horses. All are making a speedy recovery.
We understand most riders who follow this page will know to keep dogs under control around horses, but sharing this message may help prevent any further incidents. You can find information on what to do if you find yourself in a similar incident here:

Unfortunately, sometimes these instincts can take over and result in undesirable behaviours, such as chasing or fleeing. This can be distressing for both animals and handlers, and in the worst-case scenario can be fatal.

Forestry England are currently installing a new track (highlighted red). Can riders please refrain from riding on the new path to allow it to have plenty time to set.

‼️‼️BRIDGE UPDATE‼️‼️

The bridge has been repaired by Gateshead Council, however we request that horses do not use the bridge until it is repaired enough to withstand the weight of horses.
We have been advised that another 6 planks need to be replaced, unfortunately we cannot provide a timescale due to it being in Gateshead Council’s hands.
In the meantime, we suggest riders cross the small stream by the bridge or use an alternative route.

Just a quick heads up, the Chopwell woods Funduro bike race is on in the woods this Sunday morning. Probably best to avoid the woods, I'd expect it to be busy.

Hi all,

Can riders please avoid the bridge on the bridleway down by the Blackhall Mill entrance. The bridge has been built to hold the weight of horses, but unfortunately the board has rotted away and it is not safe for horses to cross.
