Meet Sully

Cheeky Sully, one of our staff pets was seen by our ECC department after eating paracetamol and gabapentin belonging to his big sister Winnie.
Sully was given an injection to induce vomiting to remove any undigested tablets from his system and sent home with some activated charcoal to absorb any remaining medication.
Sully was feeling very sorry for himself after his trip to the vets, as you can see it didn't last long and he was quickly back to his playful self.

As part of IVC Evidencia, each year we are able to apply for a Community Grant Fund to help support charities in our local community. After shortlisting several local charities, the final decision was put to practice vote with Dogs First Rescue receiving the most votes. The application was then submitted to IVC, and we are able to secure a community grant of £1000 to help with the amazing work that Dogs First Rescue do in the local and wider community

Dogs First are a registered charity, run entirely by volunteers based in Cramlington, specialising in rehoming dogs from a variety of backgrounds, helping them to find there forever home (some with members of the Moorview Referrals team). As well as this they also run a pet food bank, helping those that are struggling to ensure that their pets have enough to eat.

We are so pleased to be able to support the work that Dogs First do, with most of the funds that they raise through fundraising and donations going towards veterinary care, neutering, microchipping and vaccination of the dogs in their care.

Meet Bailey!

Bailey was referred to our ECC team after suspected ingestion of six cocktail sticks.

Following admission, a point of care ultrasound was carried out which identified at least three sharp foreign objects in the stomach. Fortunately, there was no perforation. Once we had confirmation that the cocktail sticks were still in the stomach we proceeded to endoscopy.

With the use of our pediatric gastroscope Amy, one of our emergency and critical care vets, was able to pin-point where the foreign objects were located and gently remove each one individually using specialist endoscopy graspers.

After a short time all six cocktail sticks were successfully removed from Bailey’s stomach complete with chicken still attached!

Following the retrieval, Amy was able to use the endoscope to guarantee that all foreign material had been removed and ensure that there was no trauma or perforation caused to Bailey’s oesophagus or stomach.

Bailey had a quick and comfortable recovery and was able to go home the following morning.

At Moorview Referrals we are fully staffed with an emergency and critical care team of experienced vets and nurses 24 hours a day.

We have a comprehensive range of video endoscopes and high-quality ultrasound machines which can help prevent the need for a lengthy and risky surgery.

Meet Lauren, one of our newly qualified RVN's

"I’ve always been a massive animal lover and had pets from a young age. At the age of 24 I realised that I could build a career caring for animals, and left my boring office job to study animal management at college. I joined Moorview in 2019 as an animal care assistant and after 2 years in the role I began to study as a student veterinary nurse, qualifying as an RVN in Januart this year.
I have such a sense of reward and satisfaction in my job and I am proud of what I do. I have a keen interest in anaesthesia and emergency treatment within practice. I love knowing that I have made a difference within my role."

Meet Chrissy, one of our Surgical RVN's.

" I am a Surgical RVN at Moorview, which means I spend most of my time preparing patients for, supporting them throughout and recovering them, from anaesthesia. I moved to Moorview from the Isle of Man two years ago and haven't looked back. I am currently working towards my NCERT in Nursing Anaesthesia.

Meet Christine DipAVN CertAVN RVN our Emergency and Critical Care Team Leader

"Growing up surrounded by animals both large and small, I knew from a early age that I wanted to work with them. It wasn't until I was a bit older that I discovered veterinary nursing and from that point on my path was clear.
From the day I began my training as an student nurse I have never looked back. Being a Registered Veterinary Nurse give you so many opportunities and career paths. From starting my training in a small first opinion practice in the South Lakes in 2012 to becoming the Emergency and Critical Care Team Leader at Moorview last year no two days are ever the same. There are highs and lows, but I wouldn't change a thing how many people can say they spend every day doing a job they love, working with amazing people and most importantly caring for our patients and giving them a voice."

When not at work Chris spends time competing in flyball with Rocket her crazy Jack Russel Terrier, going for long walks and reading a good book with her cat Fawkes

Meet Ruben!
Ruben was only 18 weeks old when he was referred to our Emergency and Critical Care department with a history of lethargy and anorexia. He was incredibly unwell, and initial tests showed he had a condition called bile peritonitis.
Bile peritonitis is a rare, non-septic inflammatory response to presence of bile in the abdomen, typically as a result of trauma or biliary tract obstruction. Ruben had no history of either!
Ruben needed multiple transfusions in addition to emergency surgery. During surgery, 2 leaks were found within the bile ducts supplying 2 liver lobes. Surgery was successful in stopping the leak, although a portion of Ruben's liver had to be removed as part of this.
Ruben remained in hospital for several days under the careful watch of our 24 hour on site team of emergency vets and nurses, before being discharged home.

He has returned for several post-operative checks and appears to have completely recovered from his ordeal!!

Meet Stella & Marnie!
They both came via our Out of Hours service this evening to see our ECC vet Vio, as their owner believed one or both had consumed a large volume of dark chocolate.

Upon inducing vomiting we quickly realized who the culprit was...

Unfortunately, poor Stella didn't consume any chocolate... It was her sister, Marnie!

Once they both felt a little bit better after some cuddles with our nurses, they were discharged and headed home for a nice quiet night in.

We would like to remind owners of the dangers of theobromine (the dangerous chemical contained in chocolate) and advise everyone to keep any goodies hidden, safely away from our furry friends.

Do you remember our post last month about the Pet Blood Bank?

Lola was one of the very poorly dogs in our hospital who required treatment with blood transfusions. She was diagnosed with 'immune mediated haemolytic anaemia', which is a condition in which an abnormal immune response destroys red blood cells. During her stay with us, Lola received three blood transfusions. Two of these were provided to us by the Pet Blood Bank and one was a donation made by James, who belongs to Jos, one of our neurologists.

Lola was also prescribed medication to suppress the abnormal immune response, and she was able to go home after a few days in the hospital. We were delighted to see how well she looks in this photo her owner sent us, and we are extremely grateful to both James and all the dogs volunteer to donate blood with the Pet Blood Bank. Blood transfusions are genuinely life saving, as in Lola's case.
