Weโre very pleased to hear the great news that Minnie, a much-loved 14 year old Shetland, who was admitted as an emergency case at Rossdales Equine Hospital in September, has made a full recovery.
Rossdales vet Paul Martynski was initially called out to see Minnie, who was very shaky and wobbly, had very pale mucous membranes, a very high heart rate and a high respiratory rate. Paul immediately referred her to the hospital, suspecting an abdominal haemorrhage.
On admission, medicine specialist Caroline Ribonnet carried out an ultrasound scan of Minnieโs abdomen, and it became apparent that this had filled with blood to more than 20cm depth. Minnie was immediately given a blood transfusion and medication to enhance clotting. Although this helped Minnie to feel much better, she remained in a critical condition for several days. After 5 days of hospitalisation, Minnie was able to return home, with regular follow-up care by our medicine team and Paul. Two weeks later, Paul finally saw a clear improvement on her scan and in her blood work: a clot was forming in her abdomen and her anaemia had improved. A week later, medicine specialist Caroline confirmed the bleeding had completely resolved. Minnie was then able to return to normal turnout with her best friend.
Earlier this week, our team received the most exciting news that Minnie had returned to racing - and she is the fastest Shetland on the Newmarket Heath with her little rider!
Thank you to Minnieโs family for sending us this great news and for entrusting us with the care of their fantastic pony.

With temperatures set to stay high over the coming days, please make sure you take necessary precautions to keep your horses (and yourselves and other animals) safe and hydrated.
Here is a video with some tips on how to avoid your horse getting heat stroke. You can find more detailed advice for horse owners about travelling and exercising horses in hot weather, signs to look out for in cases of heat stroke, cooling and hydrating your horses, as well as preventing or dealing with sunburn, on our website. https://bit.ly/3P83zo0
Remember, if you suspect a case of heat stroke, or your horse has a severe case of sunburn, always seek veterinary advice.
At last weekendโs Guineas Festival at Newmarket Racecourses - The Home of Horseracing, our stud vet Katie Burden was kept busy in the โFanzoneโ area, chatting about the role of the vet to racegoers who queued up to โMeet The Racehorseโ, which proved to be very popular.
Katie discussed with presenter Rosie Tapner how the vet is an important part of the team in caring for the racehorse, throughout its life, both on and off the racecourse. She explained how the vet, working closely with the trainer, can help prevent problems with horses in training through early detection of potential injuries and help to optimise each horseโs performance.
This video also features Katie Jerram-Hunnable with the famous ex-chaser Barberโs Shop, who belonged to the late HM The Queen and enjoyed great success on the racecourse before having an equally successful second career in the showing ring with Katie.

Our Musculoskeletal Ultrasound course, held on 19-21 May, was a great success, with 31 delegates taking part from the UK, Europe and Iceland.
Organised by Rossdales specialist Sarah Boys Smith, the distinguished course speakers included Sarah, Dr Eddy Cauvin (France), Prof Virginia Reef (USA), Prof Roger Smith (RVC) and Mariana Castro Martins (Rossdales).
Delegates took part in small group practical sessions with some of the best ultrasound machines available, as well as high quality lectures. There was also a full social programme that got off to a great start when course sponsor IMV imaging GB & Ireland took delegates out to dinner on Thursday evening. An early start on Friday with a tour of the Gallops ahead of the course, followed by an excellent conference dinner at The Jockey Club, with a tour of the Jockey Club Rooms on Friday evening.
Thanks to our speakers and all involved in helping to organise this course, as well as course sponsors IMV Imaging and Zoetis.
Thanks to Hannah at IMV Imaging for the great video!
We're pleased to give a positive progress report on 30 year old miniature horse Lucy Locket, who was admitted to our hospital at the end of March with a left fore septic pedal osteitis, following a nail puncture to the solar surface of the foot.
Lucy returned to the hospital today for a check up today with surgeon Richard Payne, who confirmed that he is happy with her clinical progress. Consultant farrier Stephen Kielt is seeing Lucy later, and we will aim to keep the hospital plate on Lucy's foot for another month and reassess at that time.

EQUINE COLIC AWARENESS MONTH
How to prevent colic
Sadly, there is no certain way to ensure that your horse does not get colic, but here are some preventative measures you can take.
๐น Have a regular feeding routine, with any changes to diet made gradually
๐นAlways ensure access to plenty of fresh, clean water
๐นHave a strategic, targeted approach to worming
๐นRegular dental checks, at least annually, by your vet or a qualified equine dental technician
๐นDaily turn out or exercise

EQUINE COLIC AWARENESS MONTH
What will the vet do if your horse has colic?
When the vet arrives to see a horse with a suspected case of colic, they will perform a thorough examination, including monitoring the horse's heart rate, rectal temperature, abdominal auscultation and assessing droppings. More detailed tests and examinations may also be performed.

We were very pleased to hear some good news from Ann Gibson, whose piebald yearling filly Luna was admitted to the hospital three years ago with a laceration that caused damage to a tendon sheath after she got caught up in some electric fencing.
Ann said: โI really thought Luna wouldnโt make it, but your team gave me hope to try to save her. Happily, following surgery, she made a full recovery. She will be 4 in November, so we have sent her away to be backed - sheโs been there 3 weeks now with no problems with her leg and is thoroughly enjoying life.โ

Dulcie recovers from surgery on both front legs
In January, Dulcie, a 4-year-old Poitou donkey belonging to client Barbara Reed, was referred to the hospital with lameness caused by flexural limb deformities. Dulcie was under the care of surgeon Lewis Smith, who performed inferior and superior check ligament desmotomies on both of her front legs. Dulcieโs rehabilitation included a combination of splinting, foot trimming and physiotherapy with our physiotherapist Kate Stevens. Barbara tells us that Dulcie has continued receiving physiotherapy since returning home and is making good progress.
The video shows Dulcie โbefore and afterโ her surgery and treatment, the first clip taken on 18th January and the other clips were taken on 5th February.
