New study shows athletic performance in racehorses is influenced by microbial diversity in their gut as young foals.

This ground-breaking study was published last month, which was co-authored by a number of eminent vets including Newmarket Equine Hospital stud vets Zara Wise and Charlie Smith, analysed faecal samples of over 50 thoroughbred foals from 5 stud farms across the country within the first 4 weeks of life to assess the diversity of bacterial species in their gut.

The study data revealed associations between early-life bacterial community profiles, health events and athletic performance in later life. Foals with lower faecal bacterial diversity at one month old had a significantly increased risk of respiratory disease in later life. Athletic performance up to three years old was positively associated with higher faecal bacterial diversity at one month old and with the relative abundance of specific bacterial species.

NEH would like to thank our clients who contributed samples from their foals for this study and the Alborada trust who generously funded the research.

The full research study, entitled ‘Early life gut bacterial community structure predicts disease risk and athletic performance in horses bred for racing’, has been published as an open access article in Science Reports and is available to read here. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-024-64657-6

Last week we posted about our recently published work looking at the CT features of short incomplete fractures of the proximal phalanx. The information learnt led us to refine our surgical technique for screw repair of these fractures, which has now been published in the journal Equine Veterinary Education.

This month in the journal Equine Veterinary Education, Nick Vos, who recently completed his internship at NEH, and NEH surgeon Matt Smith presented their findings on the computed tomographic features of short incomplete fractures of the proximal phalanx in TB racehorses. The information from their work has direct implications for managing these injuries in the most effective way.

Through the process of reviewing clinical cases and their outcomes, we continually strive to improve our success in managing injuries such this.

Vets from NEH (Benoit Herinckx, Mark Tunstill, Fran James) and NEH Cotswolds (Ali Butler, Jodie Daglish) joined forces to provide veterinary cover at Barefoot Retreats Burnham Market International Horse Trials this weekend for Musketeer Events. It was great to be able to provide the on site expertise and equipment for any eventuality or emergency but thankfully very little was needed!

At NEH there are separate orthopaedic and colic operating theatres. Performing these surgeries in separate theatres allows us to maintain the highest standards of cleanliness for orthopaedic surgeries such as fracture repair. It also mean we can undertake immediate emergency colic surgery whilst continuing the busy list of elective surgeries.

We’re delighted to see recent patient Hugo back in work after colic surgery at NEH. Colic is one of the most common emergencies seen in horses, with prompt intervention the key to a good recovery. Luckily for Hugo, his team at home and Ryder-Davies and Partners Veterinary Surgeons Equine Page got him to the hospital before irreversible damage to his gut had occurred.
