Happy 21st Birthday to the absolute one-off, Balthazar King. His race record is extraordinary, but no less so than his incredible recovery from serious injury and subsequent progression to a different career after retiring from racing.

BK's 19th birthday coincided with the 3000th winner for his trainer Philip Hobbs Racing. The winner of this milestone race was Zanza - now also happily and actively retired from racing.

I painted Balthazar King as one of the retired racehorses in my exhibition at the National Horseracing Museum, "The Racehorse: Past and Future", held September 2022-February 2023. Happy Birthday to the lovely Alwilda, a gentle soul who was apparently born to be a mother.

The daughter of a champion racemare, Alwilda may not have reached the same level herself on the turf, but her greatest achievement (so far!?) is her foal, Alpinista, whose record included her breathtaking Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe win.

I spent time with Alwilda in order to paint her portrait for my exhibition, "The Racehorse: Past and Future", held September 2022-February 2023. Her personality made a lasting impression on me.

Happy Birthday to the lovely Speedy Boarding, one of many luminaries owned and bred by

A descendant of the brilliant founding mare, One In A Million, Speedy was herself a multiple Group winner, including the G1 Prix de l'Opera.

Meon Valley asked me to paint her in 2023, as part of a composition that included Anapurna and Izzi Top. Wishing Speedy a happy birthday, and the best of luck to her foals on the racetrack, in the sales ring and for a happy life overall.

One recent commission was for a relatively unusual subject for me - this delightful little girl, in an heirloom dress. I have painted several times previously for the family, but in the past the models have been their dogs. I was so honoured to have been chosen to paint this precious young member of the family, and her portrait is to be displayed alongside one each of her mother and uncle, painted when they were young children.

If you're interested in painting in soft pastel, with a focus on horses, you may want to join me at the National Horse Racing Museum on Friday 19 July 2024 for a morning workshop (from 10.30am to 1pm).

The plan is to work en plein air, drawing inspiration from the wonderful collection of Stubbs' work on display at the museum.

A hero of the jumping turf, the much-loved and missed, Sire de Grugy, was born on this day in 2006. It was a great honour to get to know him a little and to paint him, as one of the key pieces for my recent exhibition at the National Horseracing Museum in Newmarket.

Ten years later, in 2016, the beautiful Persuasive won the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot, which is run again today.
