Morning of fittings, back home for a quick hack between the rain showers, ready for an afternoon of admin 🤓
How firm should flocking be?
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲?
The purpose of flocking is to provide a shock absorbing layer between the tree of the saddle and the horses back.
When mounted there should always be clearance down the channel (between the two panels). The amount of flocking may need to change depending on a number of factors such as horse's condition as well as weight of rider. For a heavier rider, the flocking will compress more, so more flocking may be needed to protect the horses back.
You may feel a new saddle and think the flocking is really soft and therefore will be comfortable for you horse. However if the flocking is too spongy, the tree may move around more on your horses back causing soreness.
Each horse is a different shape and each horse will feel more comfortable with different levels of flocking. The main things to look out for are the clearance of the saddle channel over the spine, balance of the saddle (is it rocking forwards and backwards) and for any uneven, lumpy or hollow parts in the panels of the saddle. If you are unsure always get your saddle fitter to check for you.
Saddle flocking
For all you pimple popping fans...
This afternoon involved fully reflocking a Kent & Masters GP saddle. This saddle had a full mix of different types of flocking material; synthetic, Jacobs wool and long fibre white wool resulting in some areas of the saddle becoming lumpy and hard. All replaced with long fibre white wool.
